Novice Policy Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideEmail: colinabe05@gmail.com
Experience: I am new to the novice packet, but I will do my best to flow and follow along. I am good with speed, but just make sure to slow down on analytics and tags so I can hear what arguments you want me to hear and be able to flow your cards better.
Philosophy: I think debate is a game that improves education and helps with public speaking. I am a tech-over-truth judge.
Affs: I think that affs should make sure to extend their cards and answer the opponent's cards clearly and concisely. I want the aff to tell me the story of the round and how they prove their impacts via proper impact calc.
K's: I don't like K's, and I don't think I ever will. I don't care if I am not preferable to any K debaters; I will still stand by my beliefs. The alt needs to be explained clearly as to how it works in the status quo. You need to prove how the aff links to the K and explain it well. The framework should be explained from both sides, and how I should weigh the round. You also need to prove how the alt solves better and weigh the K's impacts against the aff's impacts, and prove it's worse and will happen now. Finally, warrant it out and explain it clearly. Reading buzzwords doesn't give me enough reason for me to vote unless the aff doesn't answer it well, either.
Novices:I have noticed this in a lot of rounds, but most of the novice teams forget to mention the cards they had from their constructives when going into your rebuttals. Please don't drop your cards and try extending them and analyzing them in the rounds. Then make your arguments in the round. I value argumentation over spreading, so make sure to do that.
Everything else: Tag team is fine, just don't overtake your partner answering the questions. Run whatever floats your boat (that won't make you lose speaker points) and just be good. Don't be toxic in the debate round- you will lose speech points if it happens and that includes laughing silently or loudly.
+0.5 speaks: If you say a joke in your speech once. Multiple times of saying jokes won't increase your speaker points. You will still only get 0.5 speaks.
Any questions can be emailed to eand2501@mpsedu.org
_______________________________________________________________
Don't feel like you have to tailor your arguments to me - run what you are good at and what you want to run, I'll vote on anything unless it's Discriminatory, hateful and/or harmful. ╭( ๐ _๐)╮
Be respectful- should go without saying, but a round full of people being polite and nice to each other will always be better than one that isn't full of those said people. (●__● )
Have Fun- the best learning comes from when you want to be present, when you want to learn, and when the space is welcoming. In an activity like debate, which is so centered around education should be fun, and should be welcoming. I'm going to do my part in round to make sure that happens and I equally except everyone else in round to do so as well.

I'm Sandy! I use they/them (ENG) or elle (ESP) pronouns. Please add me onto your email chains! My email is: boltonbarrientosdebate@gmail.com
2024 will be my twelfth year in the MNUDL :O
Talk to me about Spanish Debate!!!!!!!
- 1st year as the Spanish debate coach for Minneapolis South
- 4th year as the novice policy debate coach for Minneapolis South
- Debated for Roosevelt H.S. for 4 years
- Debated for Keewaydin M.S. for 3 years
Tag team is fine but I would love it if you high fived your partner when you do it. I won't enforce this preference in any way other than telling you at the beginning of the debate and it won’t have any speaker point consequences. I just think it's a great way to navigate cross-ex with your partner in a way that's balanced, equitable, and fun!
I highly value story-telling and big picture analysis in your speeches. I love a 1AC that's narrative (i.e. internal link chain) is easy to understand. I love a 2AR overview that tells me in enough detail the story of the AFF and why its impacts matter in the debate. I love a K 2NR that flips the script of the 1AC to tell me why the links actually do matter in the greater context of liberation and structural violence.
What does this mean for you practically?
- When listening to the impact debate (on any flow-- framework, T, theory, kritikal or policy strategies), I'm looking for you to strategically and persuasively tell me why the impact is the most important thing in the round. Exaggerate! Tell me it's "try or die" for the AFF/NEG! Minimize your opponents' impact any chance you get! Abandon phrases like "might happen" or "could solve" and replace it with "will happen" and "absolutely solves". Don't be afraid to use impact calculus. Of course, these framing tools require warrants just like any other argument, but they really make a difference in if I will confidently vote for you or not.
- Speaking of warrants for your impacts, you need coherent internal link chains. Telling me "vote AFF to avoid nuclear war" in your rebuttals isn't enough. It's important to answer questions like: War with who? When? And of course, what's the connection to the AFF's solvency? Telling me the "AFF makes capitalism worse" isn't enough; What part of capitalism? Over-consumption? Labor exploitation? Extractive logic? Wealth hoarding?
- Advocacy statements and solvency should be clearly and consistently explained and extended for both AFF and NEG (if applicable). If you're AFF, that's obviously the whole thing, but just please do make sure to consistently compare the efficacy of the AFF to any alternative NEG advocacies.
(I know alternatives are tricky to explain and defend, and I'm pretty sympathetic to K debaters as a former K debater myself. I do think the Alternative is a pretty cool part of the debate. I'm really interested in radical movement building and how communities organize to make change, if that's a helpful frame to consider when thinking about how you would explain your alternative to me. Feel free to email me with questions!)
- Compare your arguments with your opponents -- clash is king!
- Communicate effectively -- if you're so fast you're unintelligible, or if your Kritik blocks are so dense nobody in the round understands what's going on, that is on you.
- Evidence is really important, but I have a pretty expansive understanding of evidence: storytelling, anecdotes, poetry, dance, journals, zines, prose, scientific journals, history, accounts, common sense thinking, etc. are all forms of evidence that can generate knowledge and prove your arguments.
- For the sake of being honest about my implicit biases, I will admit this: I do not have the brain for theory debates. I find things like aspec, condo, intrinsic perms bad, etc. really challenging to flow and follow and as a result, I don't typically include them on my ballots. Sometimes theory happens because it must or because it's Rosebowl, and I get it. But if you're wondering if you should include your A-Z spec blocks in front of me, maybe wait for a different judge lol.
- I was a K debater in high school. I'm definitely still really interested in Kritikal literature as a person involved in community organizing and who is an Indigenous Studies major. If you're curious about Kritiks, want feedback on strategies, or just to talk through ideas -- please talk to me! I can definitely provide more specific comments and ideas on: abolition, settler colonialism and coloniality, indigenous and Chicanx feminisms, and queer theory. This is not to say I'll vote for Kritiks all the time or that I won't get your policy strategy. Run whatever you want.
- Please define your acronyms before you use them!
- As opposed to Abbie "Big A" Amundsen (<3), I am a big fan of overviews!
Have fun! Be nice! Stay organized! That's all it takes.

I am a captain on the Farmington Debate Team and have been associating with/at Farmington since 2020. I like cats and my wife :3
-----------------------------
Forward (IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE IN THE PARADIGM AT LEAST READ THIS!!!):
Please be respectful and kind to everyone in round; sexism, homophobia, racism, transphobia, ableism, slurs, or anything else like the such will reflect in your speaks and will result in me contacting your coach.
Please do not read/say impacts about sexual topics or any impact that is graphic in nature
[Think of it as if you were saying it in casual conversation to a stranger, if it would need a Trigger Warning (TW) or Content Warning (CW) then don't read/say it in front of me]
If you are running an argument that you can personally associate with (such as me running a trans argument) be ready for your opponents to argue against it. If this is a thought that you are uncomfortable with, please do not run your argument.
On the other side of the coin, if you are running an argument that would speak on behalf of other groups you do not associate with or have a connection too-- please don't run in front of me
(If your opponent runs it first, you obviously have to argue against such by using evidence-- this is fine but walk a fine line to avoid becoming controversial in your statements)
-----------------------------
TLDR: Don't be mean, don't read offensive/graphic impacts. You should direct and tell me how to view and/or vote in the round I don't want to do it myself. Do impact calc. DO NOT run arguments as to waste your opponents time. CPs need to compete. DA's are great and have tons of ways to be interesting (when I debated I did a Meat DA). Case turns should be used more. Topicality is a voter and I will listen. All specific arguments should have evidence. Links NEED to be specific if you run a K. The alt to a K has to be explained in a way where both me and the other team can understand.
Clarity >> Speed
K >> Policy
Policy AFF >>>>>>> K AFF
Tech >> Truth
-----------------------------
Debate General:
Debate is supposed to be fun and an opportunity for argumentation in a way that is healthy and provides learning for everyone involved. As the debater, your job is to mold your style of debate in the way that will convince the judge best.
I will enter the round not knowing what is going on, it is your job as the debater in CX and your speeches to make that clear to me. I want to be told, and not left to assume. So speaking directly to me is important!!!!!!!!!!
I am all for speed, but please slow down during card tags and analytics -- if you go super fast during these, they most likely wont be flowed; I will try but it is a uphill battle.
Please be loud
I prefer clarity over speed
TIMING-- DO IT YOURSELF PLEASE I SHOULDN'T HOLD YOUR HAND-- KEEP TRACK OF IT YOURSELF
For novices: please follow the guidelines
In round ethics are big for me: if you are overly mean to your opponent or partner that will reflect in speaks -- in addition laughing at your opponents for any other reason than because we are all being silly will be frowned upon.
Perception wise, if you have been debating for awhile whereas your opponent is newer. As the more experienced debater I ask you make it fair, running 4+ off or just being mean will result in the lose of speaks.
Re-highlighting cards that the opponent originally ran; against your opponent are huge -- debaters should do more of that
Calling out concessions/drops on the flow will not automatically mean I will buy the arg, please explain to me why dropping an argument is important.
Road maps and proper signposting are your friend, I want to know where we are in the speech and what flows I need.
CLASH -- I LOVE CLASH -- DON'T BE TWO SHIPS PASSING IN THE NIGHT -- LINE-BY-LINE (LBL) IS AMAZING PLS
Silly arguments are good, but don't make them so silly that it is unfair -- I will not be voting your way because you ran a 2 second FW that says judge votes you up.
The debate community should be friendly!! Don't just sit in the room with these strangers like its a job interview... talk about the tournament, spill the tea about past rounds, make a alliance with other schools. Going out of your way to do this in round while being genuine will increase your speaks.
I am by far more tech over truth.
-----------------------------
AFF:
You have the first speech in the round! This is great, leverage it -- perhaps you preempt a FW flow in the 1AC. PLEASE READ A PLAN TEXT. The AFF should reference the 1AC and its cards throughout the entire debate. Please tell me if solvency is a separate flow. Collapsing/kicking advantages good, offer a reason as to why you did it though. Dropping solvency/failing to answer solvency turns or deficits will make your chances to win hard.
When answering NEG positions, if it is a CP or K-- PERM IT! This gives you auto leverage and if you develop the argument out you will have a good chance of winning it if the NEG didn't properly argued against it.
Don't drop topicality you will lose-- it is a priority
Don't drop FW on the K-- in addition read FW on the K
Explain your case to me, this create a story that is easy for me to follow
NEG:
The NEG is supposed to be a test of competition against the AFF. This fundamentally means it is up to the AFF to argue against what the NEG runs. This being said the NEG has the ability to run whatever they want, BUT that does not mean I will vote on it. Positions are a reflection of the speakers, take pride in what you run and make it meaningful (aka develop your arguments). I will not vote on your CP that is just the text. Arguments you want to win on should have carded evidence, unless it is theory.
I believe that only positions you are WILLING to take into the 2NR and explain should be the only ones read in the round. I HATE arguments where the entire purpose is to waste the AFF time as it destroys proper education in the round. It most likely will reflect in your speaks, furthermore if the AFF makes it a deal in the round it will be an uphill battle for the NEG on education voters/standards.
Answer perms
Don't kick anything unless you answered any turns and thangs of that nature
CX:
The goal of CX is to ask questions to get an advantage over your opponent. In addition you are not trying to convince them, you are trying to convince me. Please stand up during CX and look at me or in my general direction. This will increase speaks. Tag team CX is fine, please don't talk over or take over the CX from your partner though. I believe CX is binding and what is said in it acts as leverage that can be used in other speeches, such as confirming a link. Don't be mean, don't be too pushy, don't ramble on too much. Yes, using CX time as prep is real please tell me though.
-----------------------------
Argument Specific:
Theory/K Arguments:
Kritik (K): Throughout high school, my baby's have always been the K. So it goes without question that I will always love a K debate. Even though I am well 'trained' in K debate, I do not know everything. K's are often talking about more personal issues / broader societal issues. I am not a professional in these topics and want to be informed on them. Therefore PLEASE PLEASE EXPLAIN IT FULLY!
NEG-- I believe strategy for K's should be one and done, what I mean by this is unless with full commitment a K is a time suck for the AFF. K's go best with other theory and less well with policy arguments (CP, DA, etc). Explain the link and alternative CLEARLY -- this part is often not done and makes both the judge and the AFF side confused on what it is, if you cannot explain it in a way that lets us known what it is; then you are making in round education worse -- Which doesn't reflect well in speaks. I prefer less vague alts. I want to be convinced how the AFF in particular links to the K OR how the AFF makes the thing it links to even worse. Due to the nature of a K, links NEED to be specific. You need to respond to the perm's on the K.
(I LOVE LOVE LOVE 2 OFF ROUNDS WITH A K AND T -- debaters should totally do this more often)
AFF-- I believe the AFF has an overall advantage when it comes to the K debate, win the link debate and prove the alt is inefficient to solve all of case and you will get the ballot. You as the AFF also get the advantage of setting the FW debate, either by providing FW in 2AC or by preempting it in the 1AC at the bottom-- this is huge as now the NEG has to present their own FW and answer every major argument made which is easier said than done. Although K's come in all shapes and forms, the wackier the NEG arguments the easier for the AFF to win.
NOVICE IGNORE-- K AFFs: I'm gonna be straight up-- I do not like them, the object of the AFF is to be topical under the resolution, which is the best for education. We all started the season wanting to debate the topic resolution and AFFs that are under it. And inherently a true K AFF is to reject the resolution for so and so reason. Don't let this discourage you from running a K AFF though!!! I will vote on them if you convince me you are better for education, provide a clear story, and win FW (obviously).
Framework/Framing: I believe debate is a game that inherently has no rules: It is the job of the debater to set those rules for the debaters to follow. Therefore, these arguments are gonna be your friend. Convince me how I should vote in the round. I am pretty open to any of these arguments so long as you are able to explain them; prove how they are educational, and how its fair. I wont vote on FW that is unfair, such as a FW that is just "vote AFF" or anything like that.
Topicality (T): Another personal favorite of mine throughout my debate career. Their are ALWAYS new ways the topicality arguments can be ran and I will ALWAYS appreciate an interesting way when seeing it ran. If you have T, it should be a real topicality argument; not just to waste time. If need be, you should be able to spend 5 minutes on it in the 2NR.
NEG-- Your entire argument on topicality is based upon the interpretation you use, it is the yay or nay. In addition the standards are the reason why I as the judge should vote for your interpretation. Because if I don't; the voters say to the judge that if you don't prefer the interp and standards then this ### will happen (think of it as impact on the T debate). So it goes without saying that when viewing topicality, I want to see in some aspect all of these. If you have your voters imbedded into the standards, then explain them to me even more than you would normally. For the violation tell me specifically how the AFF is untopical, don't be vague. Must read all relevant parts of the T-- interp, violation, standard/voters. I will not vote on it if it does not contain these aspects in some form.
AFF-- This is a try or die argument, if it is dropped then it is an easy NEG ballot if they go for it. Respond to the argument, every part of it. The same what I said during the NEG section applies here too. Tell me how the AFF is topical not just present your counter interp. If you do not contain the expected answers to T-- it will be an uphill battle for the ballot.
Impact Calc: This is a major under appreciated set of arguments in the debate community, please do more of it in round. Impacts are the reasons why I as the judge should vote a certain way. Either because your impact must be solved first or if you implement something impact will get worse. Impact debate is often forgotten but its huge in the round!
Theory (General): Pretty much anything goes. If you have evidence, use it. I do not want theory that is exclusionary or massively one sided to prefer a particular team.
Policy Arguments: Not much to say here tbh
Counterplan (CP):
NEG-- I want to see competitive CP's, if the CP plantext and AFF are functionally the same that is not competitive and will result in voting AFF on this flow. No, I will not vote for your one sentence CP with no evidence. Explain the CP clearly for me.
AFF-- If you read a perm, explain it; either by putting analysis behind it or with carded evidence. Multiple ways of winning, such as proving it solves worst than the AFF or that it doesn't solve the entire AFF. If the ladder, you can win on AFF presumption.
Disadvantage (DA):
NEG-- I think DA's are really cool. Provide uniqueness to prove its not happening now, I will prefer whatever uniqueness is the most recent unless an argument is made to prove one or the other is better. Prove the link is true, and do it with a specific link. Do impact calc.
AFF-- Hit hard on your own impact calc, if every other argument is the same/both sides doing well this is where my decision will come too by weighing impacts. Disprove the link.

If you have any questions about how I judge not in this paradigm, ask me before the round
SFHS 2024, LD debate all 4 years, been to state twice.
This is my second time judging (JV Novice State—Eagan 2023)so it’d be nice if you could signpost and speak clearly.
+.2 speaks if you refer to me exclusively as “your majesty” the whole round.
that’s all. Have fun ;)

hi im syd (they/them)! i am a phil/cscl major at the umn.
spectators need to ask if every student is okay with being watched. same goes for recording rounds. i will double check before the round starts, and intervene if necessary.
please set up chains/get to the round on time, its a latent pet peeve (won't effect ur speaks, will make me grouchy).
i don't really care about speaks. i pretty much give out 28.8-30, although i don't think i've given out a 30 yet? the breakdown generally results in winning 2N/2A being the highest, winning 1A/1N second, etc. but i will lower for the usual reasons. mnudl kids i tend to follow the guidelines given by the udl for udl tournaments, this may result in slight discrepancies.
u need to be slower than ur top speed. tags+analytics need to be like an 8, fw/t like a 6 (which goes ESPECIALLY for k vs fw. i have the hardest time adjudicating these kinds of rounds if the debaters are flying through blocks). i flow speeches not docs, and i will vote based on the arguments i can flow. this means my decisions are better the more clear you keep your speeches.
stolen from rose larson's paradigm -- "An argument has a claim, a warrant, and an implication. Less than that and you have not made an argument and I will not evaluate it. Don't test my limits - I don't care if words you've said were not answered by your opponent, they have not 'dropped an argument' until you have actually MADE one."
my policy knowledge is always limited on any topic, you need to explain your acronyms and internal link scenarios, especially on aff. i will vote on presumption (if introduced by the neg) if i do not understand the world of the aff by the end of the debate. usually also makes me bad for t debates, since i don't have enough knowledge to make global decisions on the topic. i leave that one to the pros and love to vote on reasonability.
condo is fine until the other team wins via tech that its not. perf con to a certain extent is fine, but if your k is premised on epistemological claims i will be super willing to vote for perf con.
very tech over truth these days. dead inside etc. i will read cards after the round if there is obvious judge direction to do so, but i don't like looking at docs during speeches unless i need to for more complex debates (or when i miss an author).
i like kritiks more than any other argument in debate. these rounds are always more fun for me than policy rounds.
addendum to this -- i am dissuaded by generic kritiks. to be successful in front of me you need to have specific and clear links to the affirmative. you should be including quotes from cards or cx, the blocks should be somewhat tailored. do not fiat your alts, i do not know how that became a trend.
another kritik addendum -- you should absolutely authenticity test your opponents, especially in rounds where the argument in question is pessimistic about the future of groups of people. i do not want to hear arguments about black people being ontologically dead from a nonblack person, i do not want to hear arguments about trans people being ontologically dead from a cis person.
i like all affs, but i am also as good for fw as any other off case. these debates should be slower toward the end of the debate, and kept very narrow if possible. please overexplain interps/we meets/counter interps, this is where i get lost the most. impact framing really matters in this kind of debate.
Hello! I've been the Teacher Coach at Central for the better part of the last eight years. I have no prior debate experience, and as such I tend to judge only Rookie and Novice rounds. Here are a few things you should know:
-If you're reading unclearly, I'll ask you to slow down. If I can't understand what you're saying, I won't put your arguments on my flow
-Clash is extremely important. Make sure you are able to argue directly against what your opponent is saying
-I'm old school. If you're the aff, you need to win all stock issues
-You need to be really, REALLY convincing (basically perfect) to argue T against a plan from the packet
-If your terminal impact is nuclear war or extinction I will be very curious as to your thought process. And no, nuclear weapons being used DOES NOT lead to total extinction. If it did, we'd be extinct
Have a good one, and I'll see you in round.

Novices/Policy:
Speed --> I am fine with speed, spread through whatever you want in your constructive speeches but BE CLEAR and slow down a little on your tags and analytics.
I don't care if you tag team if both teams are okay with it (just don't abuse it --- example being cutting your partner off)
I am fine with whatever you run as long as the arguments you are presenting are well articulated/developed (that being said, just do your best!).
I'm not gonna time your speeches, prep, or cx.
Don't be racist, sexist, homophobic, etc...
Reference Sabeeh Mirza's paradigm for further info.
Brief note for LD/PF: All of my experience is in policy debate. I am less familiar with the norms of other formats. I believe that I would be considered a larper in LD terms.
Note: I enjoy a joke arg, but you must commit to the bit!!!! Additionally, I am keeping track of some UM Brooks treasure for Skye.
I was a college debater for Concordia Moorhead. I am comfortable judging both policy and critical arguments. Do note that I ran mostly biopower and cap, so I may not be as familiar with other kriticks. During the final rebuttals I want you to write my ballot for me. In other words, tell me the story of the debate round and why I should conclude that you have won. That means impact comparison, framing, and condensing the debate down to its core components.
I don't like it when debaters sacrifice clarity to speak faster. I will stop flowing if I have to call clear an excessive number of times. I also really don't like it when you slow down for the tag and speed up for the card body. To me, that says that your evidence isn't meaningful or significant and I should treat the body of cards as just filler. I will call speed if you're going too fast for me to flow.
I like it when you give a speech off your flow without any blocks.
Specific Notes:
Theory- I expect you to slow down for denser theory blocks. Otherwise, I cannot evaluate arguments I cannot write down. I will vote on theory, but I don't have any dogmatic stances on issues like conditionality or PIC/Ks.
The K- I enjoy k vs policy aff debates. I don't think you need an alt if you have won sufficient offense on their reps or epistemology, but a strong alt makes it easier to vote for you.
K affs- I will vote for K affs, but I expect robust answers to framework.
DAs/counterplan- I am waiting for the day an aff team puts theory voters on a politics DA.
Topicality- I have judged mostly novice this year, so I'm not up to date on the T meta. I want to see more T debate in Minnesota, so I will be happy to see some T.
Overall, good luck and have fun. I want debate to be a fun and educational experience for all participants. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Please include me in the email chain, but I try to avoid reading evidence unless absolutely needed.

She/her - respecting others pronouns is non negotiable
I’m currently a coach at Washburn HS, and a former varsity debater for St Paul Central HS. As a debater I was the 2N/1A and leaned towards using Ks and soft left affs
Judging -
Idc what you call me in round but if you're going to use my first name try to pronounce it right (Mar - in)
TLDR - I’ll vote on anything (within ethical bounds) as long as it’s argued + explained well
If you’re a middle schooler read the first 3 sections of my paradigm at least.
Round procedure -
Feel free to ask questions before the round begins, as well as in round as long if it is about procedure
If I’m making origami or something don’t worry I’m still paying attention
I am fairly lax and won't be a huge stickler about certain procedural things, just run them by me before you try anything. I am very empathetic to tech issues; my computer was usually the tech issue... I try to help bridge any accessibility problems that come up (tbh working tech is a privilege that debate takes for granted).
I do allow tag teaming in cross, just please split the time evenly. In speeches however try to avoid talking to your partner during their speech because that’s a pet peeve of mine.
I keep my own timer in round, but also have another for yourself because I am forgetful sometimes.
Presentation/speaks -
Speak clearly, if I can't understand what you're saying there's less of a chance I will flow it. I am not the fastest at flowing, but on analytics slow down.
I can flow fast spreading for the most part, but please justify the need to speak insanely fast. It won’t add to your speaks if you’re not using that extra time you’re making for yourself to make your arguments more complex.
Make sure to stand up and face the judge (me) while speaking (even during CX), if able.
Pet peeve of mine is unlabeled flows - please label them to make my life easier. It makes it harder to organize my flows so it increases the chance something will be misflowed - and also I WILL name them myself if not given a name, and many people across debate can attest to my unserious naming conventions.
Make sure to use all your time in all speeches - this includes cross-ex!
Please be civil - hateful language or actions will not be tolerated and result in immediate deduction from speaker points (if not an auto L) and an email to your coach.
Signpost. Signpost. Signpost.
I like it when constructives are numbered and/or specifically telling me what argument a card is responding to.
You should be pausing, saying “next” (or the like), or changing tone when you start reading a new card’s tag.
Don’t give me overviews or underviews in any of the first 3 constructives unless you really think it is beneficial on a certain flow.
In rebuttals you should be explicitly telling me what I should be voting on and how I should be weighing arguments - write my ballot for me.
Minimize new flows in the block.
Yay direct and explicit clash!!
Tech—O—————Truth
Aff -
I have slightly lower standards for presumption ballots, but mostly comes down to lack of extended warrants. I usually air on the negative side if the aff fails to extend solvency.
I have lower standards for IL chains, unless the neg blows it up.
With me framing will be your friend, especially if you have extinction scenarios.
CPs -
As with any advocacy, you should be clearly explaining what it does and how it has any solvency/net benefits.
I prefer articulated perms but if the neg drops it I’ll vote on very little. I also prefer only one perm, but if multiple are argued and justified well (as well as clearly explaining how they work and the context of them in round) I’m okay with it.
PICs annoy me so I have a low burden for PIC theory.
I have been told I don’t make it clear enough how annoyed I get with most policy CPs in general, so just run them well.
DAs -
The links and IL chain will make or break these for me - defend them with your life.
Prove to me why it o/ws case or takes out a significant enough portion of it.
Kritiks -
Because I am an experienced K debater, I am both a good and bad judge for them. I am probably a bit biased towards well run Ks, but I will not be forgiving with poorly run Ks.
Make sure you explain to the fullest degree anyway if you are running a K because they can be tricky. Walk me through the story of the k and tell me why it o/ws case.
Please don’t just throw around buzz words - they don't mean anything on their own. I know a lot of the high philosophy concepts/definitions, I just usually can't immediately mentally access them while they are being spread through at 300 wpm so explanation is incredibly important.
Signpost your k sections!! - especially in the block and 1ar.
I have trouble flowing fast FW analytics so slow down and make sure its clear.
I am not a fan of non-UQ (oh wow we live in a society) or use-of-state links but I’ll vote on them if they are explained with how it relates to the K impacts.
I have fairly high standards for impact turns, but it mostly comes down to explanation.
Same deal as with CP perms - I'm not a fan of perm walls but I'll vote on them.
Ks are my favorite don’t disrespect them please T-T
Theory and topicality -
I understand most theory/topicality as long as it’s not super niche but please explain it like I’ve never heard of it before - I won’t vote on it if you don’t tell why I should care about it in round. I am not the fastest flow-er of analytics so you HAVE to slow down.
If you start new theory flows after the 1NC/2AC make them relevant or else I will NOT care.
The buzz word standards are the ones I’m most likely to get lost in. It’s fine to only briefly explain during the constructives, but you need to contextualize/impact them during the rebuttals if you want me to care.
In my opinion, voters are not implicit - it's fine ig if you don't have them in the 1NC/2AC but in all further speeches you need to at least mention them.
You don't need to fully explain why theory is prefiat but at least give me like a sentence, don't just drop that and expect me to default to it.
I'm pretty wary of theory tbh, so if you roll up with like 7 theory flows I'm going to be more forgiving if the other side drops something.
Joke args -
I love joke args with my full heart because I believe its one of the little things that make this entire activity worth it sometimes, but there is a time and place for them, as well as the content they project should follow basic ethical standards.
If you do run a joke arg you have to be 100% in it - confidence is key! Look me straight in the eyes while you affirm that the fly spaghetti monster controls the planet. If both teams are in it, this is the most likely time I’ll award 30s lol
My email is marenjlien@gmail.com- please put me on any email chain. If you have any after round questions that aren’t answered in my ballot feel free to email me about it, I’m happy to explain anything.
Cheeky document names or any star trek references will earn you extra speaks. A 30 if you play a musical instrument instead of a constructive.
Background: I did extemp and policy in high school, I did extemp in college, I am currently a law student. I ran more pragmatic arguments in high school. That being said, I haven't heard fast spreading in a long time, so please be as clear as possible, especially online. If you cannot be clear then please speak slower.
Affs: I am fine with critical affs, but you need to defend topicality, solvency, etc. you need to be crystal clear about what you are doing and what is happening.
Negs: I'm fine with k's, but cover your bases. I am not well read into critical theory, so if you are obscure theory or a complicated take on theory, explain it like you are talking to a five year old. I will vote neg on presumption, but the burden flips if negative runs a counteradvocacy.
Topicality: I love it. Run more T. Run jurisdiction T. Make sure your shell works, but run T
Theory: sure.

Currently coaching for Central
Hi! I’m Cayden, I use they/them pronouns, please use them! I’m generally quite a neutral judge however I think that making debate an inclusive and fun space outweighs all else.
I have bad hearing so please speak extra loud and if it’s online, make sure your mic is clear!
My email is cayd3nhock3y12@gmail.com, stpaulcentralcxdebate@gmail.com if there's an email chain I’d like to be on it for ease of everything. add
This note comes before anything in this paradigm and its at the top for a reason: Please just run whatever you feel best running. I would rather have you run something I’m generally not partial to well than something I like badly. The best debates come from people running what they know best, so do that!
MS/Nov notes-
- What I said above about having fun in debates applies even more here, I coached MS and currently coach novice and truly just want it to be a positive experience for everyone involved!
- Read a plan text! If you are going for a CP or K, read the CP text or alternative!
- At the end of the day, my role in debate is to help you learn and grow, I am more than happy to answer any questions before or after the round, please feel free to email me if you think of questions after the tournament is over!!!
Some notes:
Pls no death good args in front of me. Also if your args have TW/CW let me know before the round starts please, not before the speech.
Judge Instruction-I think debate has lost a lot of what I think is one of the most important pieces which is the story of arguments. I am down for the tech level, but you are much more likely to get my vote with good judge instruction and consistently explaining the story of your args and how they shake out by the end of the round.
Spreading- Clarity comes first. I will be on the speech doc for the ease of things however I will not flow off the speech doc. If I cannot understand your tag, date, and author I will flow it as an analytic. I firmly believe that policy debate would be a far better activity without spreading, that isn’t to say I see no purpose in spreading, I absolutely understand it, but I do think it is bad for our education. If you are reading this and worried I won't be able to understand you, just slow down on your tags a little bit for me and we are good, I can flow you I pinky promise. I will also call clear three times for each person after that, if I can't understand you I won't flow it.
In round non debate stuff: I debated online for a year+ so trust me, I fully understand that “normal” policy debate ethos has gone out of the window, that being said, I would prefer if you do whatever you can so I can hear/understand you better as my hearing is not great. I also will not tolerate being explicitly rude in round. I was a very assertive debater myself so I’m not saying don’t be assertive, but don’t just be flat out rude, especially during cross. You will be getting your speaks docked. As stated earlier, debate should be fun and inclusive and I think that this is an important part of it.
Tech v Truth- Not gonna lie, unsure who is like a true truth>tech judge these days. I'm securely tech>truth, only spot that I think is a little bit closer towards truth is on bad IL chains on DAs. I also weigh arguments as new the first time they have a warrant, analytic or ev.
T- I am down for T however my standards on T impacts are higher than the avergae natcir and lower than localcir. I default to models but am also more likely to happily pull the trigger on in round abuse.
Ks- I ran Ks on both sides and love them over most policy arguments however I’m not going to try and claim to understand your complex literature I just have not read. If you are able to explain your K literature well to me I would love to see you run your K, however if you can’t, I’m not going to try and do the work for you. I also probably buy most no link args over bad link args BUT I do tend to give alt solvency a fair bit of leniency. I am down for you link you lose good or bad debates, down for most K args, not a fan of baudy or psycho but I'll judge em fairly I just won't be the happiest camper.
PTX DAs- I kinda hate them but I totally get that they are a very legit strat especially on the topic, but please be able to defend why PC is real.
CPs- Go for it. I ran a lot of these and see they have a place, that being said I’m also very open to hearing arguments against that. I think that on perm theory I’m pretty deadset neutral but I default to test of competition (idk any judges who don't anymore). I can also be convinced that X type of CPs are bad for debate if given good education and fairness arguments.
K Affs- I ran one, go crazy, love a good planless debate, love a good framework debate. Some of my favorite rounds have been performance style but also some of my least favorite have been bad K affs. I am probably not your best judge for a fairness bad round. Also, I have only ever heard one good death of debate argument and I think nearly all of the rest are not worth it in front of me.
FWK- I go through this first if its present and it will never be a "wash" for me. I default to a policy maker but also ran basically every fw under the sun so I am happy to be convinced otherwise. Please slow down on this once you get to the rebuttals and I love techy cross applications of other flows to fw.
Condo!- I go into each round deadset neutral on condo. I've seen teams win condo v a 1 off conditional advocacy and teams win v condo running 10+ conditional advocacies. I probably am truly deadset neutral on my own opinions around the 6 condo advocacies line, slightly more likely to vote aff once you hit the 10 off mark. All of this can be 100% changed by the round in front of me (obviously) just know these are the mental lines I think I have.
Theory in general- I am sad to say I feel like I need to add this because of Central. I will vote on most theory args, I defualt to condo good but that can be easily changed in round. I also think in round abuse args are always going to be the strongest but models of debate is fine too. At the end of the day though, just because I will vote on it doesn't make me happy to and your speaks will reflect that.
Also, unless the tournament rulebook specifies disclosure, please don't run disclosure theory in front of me, I believe that if you can win on disclosure theory, you can win on something else.
Hi I'm tom and I go by He/Him pronouns. I am currently The head coach for Roosevelt High school and have been debating for 7 years. I am currently a student at Augsburg.
Please add me to the email chain: Tommilmick@gmail.com
I have debated at all levels of debate and am very familiar with all arguments. For most of my time as a debater I was a strictly policy debater. My normal rounds would usual look like either a soft left policy arg on aff and a Cp and Da heavy neg. However in my last year of debate I heavily used Ks on both the aff and neg specifically Dino earth ( If you want to learn more or have any questions you can ask or email me about it i really enjoy it). My Kritik literature is pretty deep so I can vote on a lot of it. I think debate is about having fun and making arguments that you truly care about and are interested in.
I will vote for any form of argument (Except Baurillard Ks) you make but you have to give me clear reasons why and have a good foundation of evidence for it.
How I weigh most debate args:
Tech -o-------- Truth
my pronouns are she/her
*my experience is in policy, if im judging you in a different category, please have patience
run whatever seems best to you, i won't automatically vote down any position (assuming you have the decency to keep things respectful - if what you're reading are arguing is harmful, that takes precedent over any debate rules)
most (not all) of the notes below are for the neg, i will vote for pretty much any aff that can prove they solve a problem that they have also proven is more important than that of the neg. i also like creativity, and am certainly not opposed to voting for a K-aff, policy gets stale sometimes anyways.
K's
you have to explain each part of your K flow for me to consider it voteable. if your alt solvency is talking about revolution, and your alt is a mental rejection, you would need to explain how those fit together.
continuing with alts, I need to know if you mean for the alt to be a fiated action like "we go anarchist sicko mode and overthrow the state" or if it's in round and you achieve solvency by spreading that K to me and the other debaters
affs who focus entirely on the link side of a K debate are generally not on top of things, obviously it can work, but its much more convincing if you can meet the K at a critical level instead of avoiding its content with a 10 foot pole. debate the whole K.
CP's
this is my favorite type of arg, especially against affs that force the neg to defend an awful status quo. your CP needs an explicit net benefit and generics such as states or actor cps are hard to do right and generally not very convincing. if your main net benefit is a solvency deficit you need to do as much work on harms as the aff did in the 1AC. teams who bring up perm theory are goated.
DA's
big stick DA's are lame. your impact should be geared towards outweighing the aff in the same world the aff lives in. big stick can only beat soft left if the aff majorly goofs it, or if you win a tech over truth debate - possible, but a lot of extra work. similarly if the aff is about preventing mass death, then your impact should shoot for something similar.
if you make me laugh, you instantly get at least a minimum of 28 speaker points.
Debate History:
4 years debating in Wisconsin from 1999-2003.
Coaching @ Washington Technology Magnet School in Saint Paul since 2013.
First off - yes, you can tag team so long as it doesn't turn into a yelling fight.
Generally, I take points off for using too much speech time, not using all your time, being overly aggressive without warrant during CX, saying things that are racist, sexist, ableist, etc.
In the old days, I would have just called myself TABS (Tabula Rosa, or blank slate.) In general, I'm comfortable voting on most kinds of arguments, although I often find myself deciding many JV and V rounds on framework due to a lack of clash elsewhere in the debate.
My background is in Chemistry and Physics, so I have at best a debate level knowledge of much of the K literature. That being said, I'm very comfortable with the technical aspects of debate, so label your arguments well and explain yourself in your rebuttals and I should have a good idea about what is going on. That said, I'm sensitive to punching down, so if you have a "funny" aff be careful that it is also respectful.
Hey! I'm Lizzy (she/her) & I'm about to be your judge!!
Please put me on the email chain: lizzysabel@gmail.com
4 years of high school debate at Eagan High School (MN) & now I'm a coach there. I've been judging for 8ish years now. I'm a University of St. Thomas Alumni (Roll Toms), and I majored in Political Science and Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies.
My main goal is for you to have fun, get better at debate, & maintain a safe environment for all debaters.
TLDR: do what you're going to do; my job as a judge is not to police your arguments, it's to evaluate the round presented to me.
----- FYI -----
*Clarity over speed. I will be flowing on paper (most likely stolen from you lol) and voting based on what is on my flow. It is a valuable skill to read your judge, and to do that you need to look at them. Go as fast as you want just make sure you're clear and I'm writing down what you say. That being said, I generally prefer a mid-speed/slower debate. If you are unclear, I will say "clear."
*If you want me to think something, you must say it. I try my best to not intervene on any issue and decide the round entirely based on what the debaters do/say in round. I will not make arguments for you that aren't on the flow.
*Clearly label your arguments. Organize your speeches, label positions, signpost, use short tags, and identify arguments that you are responding to (ex. "off the no link").
*I care most about how the affirmative's proposed action will affect people. Explain to me how your impacts affect the material conditions of people's lives and why your impacts are more important than your opponents' (ex. timeframe, probability, magnitude comparisons).
*I tend to be skeptical of extinction & nuclear war impacts. If you do have those impacts, pls have a good internal link chain. I'm more favorable to impacts like racism, sexism, ableism, poverty, anti-Blackness, homophobia, sexual violence, etc. But, I still enjoy impacts like climate change, resource wars, etc.
*Write my ballot for me. Every judge you have wants an easy decision. In your rebuttal overviews tell me exactly why you are winning this debate (ideally paired with some killer impact analysis).
*My speaker points are generally high (my guess is an average of 28.5). I will reward well-executed strategies, clever concessions, insightful case debate, good cx questions, technical skills, and being respectful to your opponents. I love a good joke, pun, tasteful use of slang, and/or pop culture references in a debate :) pls make me laugh
*Tag Team CX is chill, just BE RESPECTFUL. If you want to waste your 3 min of free prep by asking a bunch of questions for your partner, go off, I don't care. Don't get it twisted though, I won't let you take your cross ex for prep; if you don't have any questions, your cx time ends. I will time prep & speeches along with you, but you must keep your own time too. Don't steal prep, it's annoying and unfair. I fear that I did it all of the time, so I know all of your little tricks haha.
*Unless specified as a requirement by the tournament rules, "new affirmatives bad" is not a good argument. This activityis supposed to help you learn to think on your feet and be strategic, do that. If someone is running a new aff, I will be lenient to the neg on generic links, especially paired with a T violation that proves the link.
*"Tech over Truth." I generally proscribe to this. Line by line is a lost art.
*If you claim in-round abuse, you need proof. I'm literally begging you.
*You need to respond to case (and have CLASH). It's very hard to win as the neg after conceding the entire aff. Cross applications from other flows are chill, but not enough.
----- Specific Argument Breakdown -----
T: Topicality is a default voter, but I’m persuadable and have voted for non-topical and non-policy advocacy statements many times. My favorite argument as a debater was T, so I generally have a higher threshold for what needs to be said on the flow (for both sides). I generally believe that jurisdiction is a sufficient reason to vote (why is nobody going for this anymore smh). RVIs are dumb... unless there is (once again) proof of abuse in round. SPEC debates are not interesting to me, but I will listen.
FW: This is just a glorified T debate. Switch-side isn't a great offensive argument, but I will vote on it if I'm forced lol. I think the neg should have a TVA to make their FW viable. I just need teams to tell me what debates look like under their model.
I tend to abide by the principle that debate is a game meant to improve the education and public speaking of its participants, but I am open to a wide variety of differing interpretations of the activity so long as they are well-substantiated. Without the presence of super-ceding frameworks, I generally default to a humanitarian-utilitarian policymaker.
Theory: I think condo can be good, but can be convinced otherwise if there is in round abuse. I will probably reject the argument and not the team, unless given a good reason to. PIKs/PICs are fine, but I will probably favor a reasonable perm explanation.
Ks: I'm familiar with critical literature. I'm less familiar with high theory than I am with traditional Ks (Neolib/Cap, Security, etc), identity-based Ks, and other structuralism Ks. I greatly prefer specific links and specific evidence when I can get it, but vote without specific links when I must. I'm generally not convinced by a link of omission.
I deeply respect the hustle of a 2/3 card K, but you better flesh it out well enough in the block if it will be in the 2NR. Please tell me what the world of the alt looks like!!! Ks function like vague DAs to me, but with an alt that usually makes no sense. If you don't want to put in the work to articulate an alternative, commit to the bit & run your K like a DA (with some FW on why that should be legit).
DAs: Do whatever you want, just please read all parts of the DA or you will lose this argument (unx, link, intl, impact). Note: impact preferences above in point 4.
CP: Most CPs on this topic are not competitive. Just ~please~ have a net benefit. Multiple planks are almost always abusive.
Stock Issues: Inherency is a part of the affs burden of proof and definitely a voter. More people should exploit that.
Performance: I'm down for it! Very cool when done well. You need theory to back yourself up. Explain everything very in-depth and clearly articulate why it matters more than the topic, FW, and/or T.
Experience: I am a fifth-year policy coach for Rosemount High School. I debated for 4 years at Rosemount High School and recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in political science (quantitative-focus) and election administration. My main experience in argumentation is in policy-oriented soft-left positions, with a focus on legal theory (court CP's, Court Legitimacy, Test Case FIAT, etc), although I did often run critical arguments such as Neoliberalism, Security, Legalism, and Disability.
Please include me on email chains: sewpersauddebate@gmail.com
Framing: I view debate in a few ways:
1. It is an educational activity first and foremost. Everything else (competitive success, winning, etc) is second to education. If you aren't learning, then you aren't succeeding in debate. If you do things that actively harm someone else's education, then you will get bad speaker points.
2. It is a game - in the sense that it should be fair, and you shouldn't exclude others from the discussion. This means debate should be accessible and respectful. Intentionally misgendering your opponent, saying rude comments or anything like that (especially laughing at the other person giving the speech) is not good for a game. That will also hurt your speaker points.
3. It is a competitive reading activity - you should read your opponents' evidence and attack the specific warrants. The other team's evidence is also the best way to find links to any kritiks. Additionally, this means evidence quality matters -- if you misrepresent your warrants and the other team calls you out for it, I will intervene and only judge the warrant as the author originally intended it.
4. Clarity > Speed - I flow on paper, and if you are reading at one speed that is incomprehensible, then you will get low speaker points. I have voted for teams but given them 26 speaker points to them purely because they did not slow down throughout their speech, creating a borderline unflowable speech. Lack of clarity is anti-education.
5. In-depth conversation and argumentation >>>>> five-off or more - I think the tendency to read as many off-case arguments as possible to out-spread the other team is an inherently bad strategy and extremely detrimental to debate. It certainly damages education. I will absolutely accept Condo arguments if the other team is reading more than four-off, especially if you explain how damaging it is to education. This is one of the few areas where I am very oriented towards (my personal) truth over tech. Reading an unreasonable number of off-case arguments is a surefire way to lose a ballot in front of me. Especially if 3 or more of those arguments are separate advocacies, I will (almost) automatically buy abuse arguments.
Affirmatives: As I stated before, I prefer policy plans, but if you have a more critical advantage, I will not be too lost. I prefer soft-left affirmatives over policy affs, but I've run both types. Advantages that tackle discrimination including Sexism, Ableism, or Racism are very responsive to me, as I believe they have the most realistic impacts. I also generally believe the affirmative must be in the resolution. In other words, if you have a critical aff, this is not the best round to run it. I believe the affirmative should stick to the plan text and should defend that plan throughout the round. I do, however, understand the validity of Critical Affirmatives, but if you cannot answer the questions from the negative like "what ground do we get?" or "how is your model of debate accessible?" during cross-examination, you will likely lose, because I view debate as a game that needs to have at least some semblance of fairness and education. In my experience, some K affs end up being a way to scare other teams from engaging with the arguments and ends up shifting the discussion away from education. Basically, if you're able to defend how your model of debate promotes fairness and education, then K affs are fine. But I generally think plan-based affs provide for better models of accessible debate.
All that said, I have recently coached teams that almost exclusively read a non-topical critical affirmative and my stance has softened slightly on that front. I’ll evaluate your K aff, but be prepared to defend your model of debate and why you think it’s good!
Disadvantages: If you run this and want to win with it, there must be a clear link. If you don't do enough specific link work in the 2NR (i.e. show how the plan directly causes your link chain), I probably won't vote for it, unless the aff never answers it in the 2AR. Also, make sure you do impact calculus between the aff and the DA, and prove why your impact is worse. I also love when a team runs a CP with their DA. For politics DAs, I hate most of these because I think the logic behind these DAs is bad and generally relies on flawed assumptions. Politics DAs can be creative, but the bar for this is very high if I'm your judge.
Counterplans: CP's are a versatile position which I am quite familiar with. I believe Counterplans do not have to be topical, but they should still be competitive. Also, if you run a CP, make sure you answer the Perm, and when you do, make sure that you tell me specifically why it doesn't function. Theory can be an independent voter (when it is impacted out), so don't ignore it. Additionally, I think sufficiency framing is usually a pretty lazy argument that is made by teams who don't think their CP solvency is all that good. You need to prove why the CP solves BETTER than the affirmative, not just that it solves "enough" of the aff. Sufficiency framing is generally not enough for me to vote for the CP.
Topicality/FW/Theory: While the position is more valid when there is clear abuse outlined in the argument, there doesn't always have to be abuse. It can be used effectively as link traps or for other strategic reasons. I also love Effects/Extra Topicality arguments, especially if presented well. For the aff, Reasonability is a valid argument, but if you want me to vote on it, tell me why your plan is reasonably topical under the neg's interpretation and the aff's. On theory, disclosure theory is a non-starter. Do not run this, even as a cheap argument. While it won't lose you the round, it will damage your credibility with me and your speaker points. The only exception to this is if the team discloses one aff, and then changes it at the last minute. Then I can see it being warranted. For the most part, I think theory is usually used as a cheap strategy. Don't use it as that. Use it only if it is well-warranted. A-Spec is usually ridiculous and I don’t think I’d find myself voting for it all that often, although if it’s well-warranted, then maybe (the bar for that is extremely high, so please try to avoid this unless absolutely necessary). Perf con against a team reading one-off is ridiculous. Condo against a team reading one-off is ridiculous. Make sure your theory arguments make sense!
Most of all in theory debates, SLOW DOWN! You are essentially reading paragraphs which are incredibly difficult to flow if you just speed through them. I think spreading through theory is anti-education, and is a surefire way to damage your speaker points. I flow on paper, so my flowing speed is limited and I'm not going to flow theory arguments that I missed - it's your burden to make sure I get them. Additionally, if you don't slow down on theory arguments, you will damage your speaker points. Like I started this paradigm with, debate is an educational activity first. If the way you read theory is anti-educational, I will let you know after the round.
Kritiks: I am not great with all K's, so if you run one, make sure you clearly explain the story (especially the link and alternative) if you expect me to vote for it. However, I have run Disability, Security, Legalism, and Neoliberalism K's as well as Word PIKs, and done some coaching on more identity-based Kritiks, so if you're comfortable with those positions, this would be the round to run it. Basically, if you really want me to follow your Kritik, run Security, Disability, Afropess, Language K's, or Neoliberalism. If you don’t care if I understand your position, run Deleuze, Queer Pessimism or Baudrillard. I have a high bar for voting for Kritiks that I am not familiar with. Do not assume I understand your Kritik, explain it at the thesis level. Just as importantly, explain it within the context of the affirmative! What is the problematic assumption or rhetoric that the aff makes/uses? How does that cause the perpetuation of the bad thing you're Kritiking? How does your alternative resolve the issue? A Kritik that earns my ballot will answer all of these questions.
General: Spreading is fine, but make sure you don't go past what you feel comfortable with and SLOW DOWN ON THE TAGS. If I miss your tag because you didn't pause or slow down when reading it, I am not going to flow it for you. Make it clear, or I won't weigh the argument. When you are speaking, make sure you analyze each argument in full and make a coherent claim. Tags should be complete sentences. The word "Extinction" is not a tag. I will not flow it as an argument if that is your tag. Also, please self-time. It really helps me, and especially it helps you.
Please do not try to throw rounds. I have had a team do that in front of me, and I believe that it legitimizes a bad practice in the debate community, is anti-education, and it will severely impact your speaker points if I realize your intention.
Structuring: I will give you extra speaker points if you NUMBER AND SUBPOINT each of your arguments on the flow for the ease of flowing.
Other Positions/Arguments: There are a few positions that I will NEVER evaluate within any round. These include, but are not limited to:
-Racism/Sexism/Ableism Good
-Suicide CP/DA and/or Death K (Seriously. The way this is commonly debated brings with it serious mental health concerns and I will tolerate none of that.)
-Spark/Wipeout/Timecube, etc
Basically, if you think that your position sounds like it advocates for something offensive, don't run it.
Cross-Examination: Make sure you are polite. I am fine with tag-team if both teams agree to it, but if you shout over your partner, I will dock speaker points. Most importantly, remember that CROSS-EX IS A SPEECH. Cross-Ex is a great place to set traps for your opponents, and for you to be able to use what they say in-round against them. I do flow cross-ex, so I know what was said. Don't try to pull one over on me.
To sum it all up in a few points...
1. Education comes first. Debate is an educational activity at its core, and I believe my primary role within the round is that of an educator. If you do things that I deem as harmful to debate education, you will get lower speaker points, and may lose the round.
2. I tend to be a policy-oriented judge, although I am very comfortable with Kritiks. If you want to run one, be sure to fully explain it as if I have never heard of the philosophy before.
3. Cross-Ex is a speech and a great place to form arguments, so use it!
4. Explain everything to the fullest extent, especially links. If there is not enough work done on DA/K/T links, I will not vote for it.
Feel free to ask me any other questions before the round starts!

Call me my name, not judge. I'm a current varsity debater at South, and I've debated three years high school and two years middle school. If you have questions after a round feel free to email me. I'm good with tag team. I have passing knowledge of the novice and middle school packets. I also definitely am generous with speaker points, so take them with a grain of salt. I tend to prefer clarity over speed, don't go faster than what you're comfortable with. If you can convince me, I'm open-minded to any aff and neg strats. Bottom line is: debate is a game!!! Be respectful and have fun. If you are mean, mock your opponent, or purposefully use offensive language, you will get low speaker points.
You can call me alex, judge, or judge alex

I've been juding for a few years and i debated a bit before that (started judging in 2018)
Its okay to be nervous. debate especially when you just start debating can be really scary. Its okay take a deep breath. if that doesn't work talk to me we can ways pause the round for a minute or two for mental health.
Clarity comes before speed
Yes you can tag team but don't abuse it. (You can not tag team against a maverick )
Even if both teams are three headed monsters the third person who isnt in that debate CAN NOT help.
If I don't understand an argument by the end of the round I won't vote for it
If your spreading is unclear don't assume I wrote down anything you said.
If you don't make it clear your going onto a new card by saying next it is very possible I'll miss your tag.
Make it clear where you on in the speech by sign posting i will probably flow it on the wrong flow which wont make your argument stronger.
Its totally fine to be assertive but don't be mean if you get mean I'll dock speaker points.
If i see you not flowing all of the speeches i will dock speaker points.
Don't ask me questions in round if it deals with the round wait until the debate is over and im giving my rfd.
Extending isnt re-reading the card its reading the author year then explaining the warrant in your own words
I don't flow cross x. BUT if you say something that goes aginst the side you supposed to be on i will write it down in the notes
Tell me if there is anything you don't want me to comment on like if you have a stutter. I dont wanna be bring that up and possibly just annoying you
