Iowa City Middle School Tournament
2024 — Iowa City, IA/US
Novice PF Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideFaizaan Ahmad (He/Him)
Have done PF for a year
Simplified for Middle School Tournament:
Tech over truth (This essentially means you can run any argument and I'll believe you, no matter how crazy it is. For example, you can say the sky is green and I'll evaluate it unless your opponent adequately responds)
Signpost and Off time Roadmaps! (MAKE THIS A HABIT EARLY!):
Singposting- During your speech, tell me where you are on the flow. For example, "Now moving on to their second contention" Basically just help me understand what you're talking about.
Off time roadmap- a brief explanation of what you'll be doing before any speech (besides case) For example, "Before I begin my speech, I will be going over my case, their case, and then weighing)
Look at me during speeches and during cross. You're trying to convince me, not your opponents.
Case: All I can say for case, is just understand it. This will help you in crossfire
Rebuttal:
-1st Rebuttal: Attack opponents case
-2nd Rebuttal: Defend for a bit and then attack. If you don't answer to what your opponent said in first rebuttal, you're whole case could potentially get turned and that gives offense to the other team.
Basic Rebuttal Tip:Use the blockfile right. TURNS ARE AMAZING! Use turns because that gives you offense.
Summary: IMPORTANT SPEECH! Extend Extend Extend! Extend your case, answer the things your opponent has put on your case, extend things your opponent dropped from your rebuttal, and WEIGH!
Weighing: Weighing is so important. It helps me evaluate what you want me to evaluate. Tells me why your impact matters more.
Final Focus: Give me the voters and why you should win the round
Ill disclose at the end of the round. Post round me if you are confused on anything.
Have fun, good luck, and lets get it!

PF Varsity at Iowa City West High. I also do speech but that's irrelevant.
PF:
In general, tech > truth.
If I'm not flowing then slow down.
Make sure all arguments are correctly warranted.
Don't just read cards. Analyze!
Off time road maps and signposting are helpful for flowing.
Please try and respond to all arguments as soon as they are made or else I'll have to flow your opp's argument as a win.
Make sure to extend all arguments! Nothing sucks more than forgetting to mention an amazing point in summary therefore preventing your partner from bringing it up in FF, meaning I can't flow it!
Have fun!
Speech:
good luck!
Speaks:
30: wow
29.5-29: great work
28.5-27.5: pretty good
27-26.5: okay
26-25.5: you need to work your stuff out
≤25: mad corny
Flay judge. I have no reason to vote for you if you do not have quantifiable impacts.

read bolded parts if you're in a rush
quick prefs:
Policy/LARP/normal substance - 1
Theory - 1
K - 2 (ask me before the round about the K you're reading, some are 1s and some are 5s)
phil - 4
Tricks - 4
The substance:
Frameworks are fine, but please warrant them. Don't just say "the framework is structural violence", say “the framework is structural violence because xyz”.
I generally enjoy unique arguments, squirrely cases are cool and really show creativity. At the same time, I think it's super impressive to be able to read a stock contention and frontline it well enough to win. Literally read whatever you want.
Defense isn't sticky
if you weigh i'll look to that first. If you don't, i'll just choose whatever argument i like better. Please weigh. Link Weighing > Impact weighing.
Please weigh in rebuttal/summary and just extend your already existent weighing. I’ll evaluate new weighing in first final but I will not be happy.
I have a soft spot for impact turns. Spark, Climate change good, (existential threat x) good, are all fine. i can't believe i have to say this but please don't try to impact turn inequality impacts
rebuttals don’t have to extend, 2nd rebuttal MUST frontline.
Disads are fine.If you’re basically just reading another contention in rebuttal, then I’ll flow it and evaluate it, I guess. If your disad is responsive to smth your opponent read (e.g discourse of SV perpetuates it) then I will be very happy. Responsive disads are fire.
Overviews are good. Weighing overviews are great.I enjoy debates with weighing overviews a lot and i think it is incredibly underutilized. I don’t know how much I agree with the idea of reading an overview and trying to win that the overview is terminal defense on everything your opponents read, but I’ll flow it if that’s you.
Progressive arguments:
just because I can evaluate prog doesn't mean you should run it. If substance is your thing then run substance. My role as a judge is to adapt to you. I want you to have fun, do whatever makes you happy.
Theory:
I'm pretty comfortable judging a theory round. I default Text > Spirit, No RVIs, CIs > reasonability, Yes OCIs, DTA for evidence violations i.e paraphrasing, DTD for out of round violations i.e disclosure. I would only default to these if no paradigm issues are read; please read paradigm issues.
paraphrasing is bad, and disclosure is good. I will vote on paraphrasing good/disclosure bad if won.
Nothing is frivolous. I’ve read some really "dumb" theory shells and I had an absolute blast doing it. Do whatever you want in round; if you win it, i’ll vote on it. (As long as it isn’t ___ist)
Kritiks:
I'm good for most of these, but high theory Ks (Camus, Baudrillard, etc.) are probably not a good idea, identity Ks/Cap/Sec/Fem are usually fine. I read afropess quite a bit so I am familiar with a lot of the key aspects of the literature. I have also encountered many SetCol/Cap Ks so I should be good for those unless your K is super unique, in which case please explain it well. I'm good for most performance Ks, just make sure to extend your performance. Stolen from Zion Dixon: "Debate is antiblack. I don’t just believe it, I know it." I will honestly probably be biased towards antiblackness Ks unless the person reading them is not black. Non-black pess is an Auto L25.I am primarily a K debater and really appreciate the concept of Kritiks, so if you have a K you wanna test out, this is your chance.
Callouts are dumb. I refuse to flow them or vote off of them.
IVIs are fine, just warrant them. If the violation is really bad, run a shell. At the same time, I don't expect you to read a shell with an interp like "Debaters must not misgender their opponents". If it's something personally harmful to you then either run an IVI or ask to stop the round. Stopping the round is not a guaranteed win, If it's something that isn't triggering to you or something that you think you can power through, please continue the round.
I will drop you for misgendering someone, apologies don't solve and i'm not at all open to hearing arguments that claim otherwise. I am a lot less comfortable voting off a misgendering IVI if you don't have your pronouns up on tabroom.
I will drop you for reading any form of argument that advocates for your opponents/partner/yourself to harm themselves. I will stop the round and vote you down with the lowest possible speaks if you even tangentially sound like you're advocating for someone to harm themselves.
Metatheory > Theory = T > K > Substance
"It's not allowed in PF" isn't a response. "Our coach didn't teach us" isn't a response. "We're not allowed to disclose" isn't a response. "What's the wiki?" isn't a response. If your response to theory/Kritiks is basically “nooo this is PF :(“ you will lose. I'm tired of people pretending like underprivileged debaters have no clue what theory is. There are hundreds of theory rounds online and there are lectures that teach you parts of a theory shell. You don't have to pay thousands of dollars to go to camp to learn what a theory shell is. If you're interested in going to a camp but you can't afford it, google outreach debate. If you have a budget and want to practice a lot of rounds, google PFBC/NSD. I went to both and they taught me a lot. If you're a debater competing in varsity, you should be able to respond to any form of argument including but not limited to theory, kritiks, impact turns, squirrely arguments, etc. your response to a shell should either be a “we meet” or reasons why the interp is bad (preferably a counterinterp but anything is fine).I am a debater from a small school and I knew what theory was by the end of novice year. My second year, I was running it. I guarantee you that you're smarter than me. If I could put in 40 minutes to read about it then so can you. I think too many teams try to get away with lying about team policy to get out of theory shells which won't work with me. If your coach tells you explicitly not to do x thing, make sure they give you reasons as to why x thing is a bad norm so you can beat it in round.
contact me for any questions on progressive debate, I'm happy to help.
General things to note:
Your speaks will be fine, I will very rarely give below a 27
I don't care how fast you speak.
I don't care if you're sitting or standing.
I don't care what you're wearing.
I don’t care if you cuss.
Policy
I will vote on anything, a Plan vs CP debate is probably boring but I'm comfortable evaluating it. I'm a good judge for DAs, theory and very basic capitalism kritiks. I can probably evaluate Identity Ks, Performance Ks, and Setcol Ks but reading high theory is really not a good idea
Spreading is fine, with the caveat that you have to 1) Enunciate and be clear 2) Send a speech doc 3) Slow down on analytics and tags
Kritiks are my favorite form of argument, if you have a K you want to test out, this is your time.
I know nothing about the topic, please explain acronyms at least the first time you say them.
Condo is usually good but I'll vote on condo bad if you win it(Same with any other argument)
Please don’t cite my paradigm in round.
If that's not enough for you, most of my views in debate are shaped by:
they’re way smarter than me and have more in depth paradigms.
Hi!
Add me to the email chain: awemazinga@gmail.comand aagup27@icstudents.org (please add both to the email chain). I prefer speech docs to be sent before round since it makes evidence exchanges so much easier, but that's not something I will require of you.
Here are resources to get better at debate (mainly compiled by my coach).
Important stuff is bolded.
PF Paradigm:
I am a FLAY JUDGE, I have some experience on the national circuit and do well at locals.
I debated the February topic (single-use plastics) at one tournament so I have some background information, please explain abbreviations at least the first time you say them.I haven't debated the April topic at all so please avoid abbreviations or confusing topic language (obviously you can say things that are common knowledge like calling "United Nations" the UN).
For the Iowa City middle school tournament -- don't worry too much about the stuff in this paradigm. Just do what you do and you'll be fine :)
Tech > truth
If you tell me the moon is pink WITH WARRANTING then the moon is pink until it's responded to. However, I will feel better voting on an argument that makes sense rather than a blippy squirrely contention
Evidence Stuff:
Evidence exchanges should not take more than a minute or a few minutes MAX.Miscut evidence is an automatic loss.I'm not going to say that I'm anti-paraphrasing but I will say that if you do paraphrase at least be able to point out where in the article you got your information from. If I have to read an entire article I will be very unhappy and your opponents can probably convince me to strike the card of my flow fairly easily.
I do not listen to cross.
PLEASE WEIGH. Also, please do comparative, warranted weighing. I like frameworks but they need warrants and weighing.
I want you to write my ballot for me. The more you tell me what to do, the less I have to think about my decision and the less likely it is for me to intervene and make a mistake. If you don't tell me where to vote, I will vote off the least mitigated argument that is weighed the best on my flow. Absent weighing I look at the argument with the least defense.
Please SIGNPOST and give off time roadmaps because they help me flow the round. I will not extend offense/defense for you and I expect good extensions (reiterate the parts of your argument in a concise manner) in every speech for any argument you want me to vote on (barring rebuttals).
I love good analytics.
Good card + good warranting > good analytic w/o card > good card w/o warranting
Frontlines should be in second rebuttal. Collapsing is always a good idea. My pen goes down at 10 seconds over time and your speaks go down if you're over 15 seconds over time.
Please preflow and set up email chains BEFORE round if possible (I understand that tournaments can get delayed but try your best).
My wpm is 225 or less, if you go faster you should able to produce a speech doc for me to follow along with. The faster you go, the less I can flow. I prefer slower rounds over fast rounds. I am an emotive judge, you will see if I am confused (except if it's online because my camera can get blurry). I will yell clear if I do not understand you, and if you do not slow down/enunciate more then I will probably not have a very good flow and you will probably lose.
Please project your voice and enunciate. Funny rhetoric/Taylor Swift references are good for your speaks.
Progressive Debate (if you're competing at a potomac intramural you can ignore this):
I am not the ideal judge for a K/Theory round. I will try my best to evaluate any argument you present but your chances of getting screwed are pretty high if you decide to read any sort of prog. I feel somewhat confident in my ability to evaluate a disclosure/paraphrasing round, but that's about it. Spark, dedev, etc is fine with me but probably send a speech doc.
For LD, Policy, etc -- I am a lay judge.
If you ignore the things in this paradigm, don't be surprised when the round doesn't go your way.
To quote tabroom, "be mature, and good people"
My coach for the past two years has been Sophia Gustafson so if you want more info, check out her paradigm
I am totally cool with giving a verbal RFD and answering questions before/after round if you want me to! Post-rounding is fine with me as long as you are respectful (complain about me when I can't hear). Good luck and have fun!
Add me to the email chain; emkle27@icstudents.org
Hi, my name’s Emily, I have done one year of PF.
Do what you want, I don’t care. Just keep in mind that I am not good with spreading or anything too technical. Be respectful and you will be fine!
Good luck!
For higher speaks make sure to emphasize the important words in your sentences and make everything clear!

PF:
HAVE YOUR EVIDENCE READY TO SHARE
I DON'T UNDERSTAND K'S, UNLESS IT'S SUPER SIMPLE DON'T RUN IT, OR I WON'T EVALUATE IT:
I haven't debated any K's and don't really understand them so you will probably loose me, and don't do it in novice pf anyway.
FLAY JUDGE
TECH>TRUTH:
I'm going to evaluate the round of what is on the flow, I don't care if its the most unrealist thing ever, if you don't respond to it, I will evaluate it.
WPM:
I don't care how fast you speak, I can flow up to 175 wpm pretty well, share me the speech doc just to be safe tho
THEORY:
I have a pretty good understanding of theory, although I won't recommend running any if your a novice, you can run theory if you want I'll evaluate it.
MAKE SURE TO WEIGH!:
Weighing is really important in round, if you don't weigh, I won't know what to evaluate so I'll just pick an argument
PleaseSIGNPOSTandgive off time roadmapsbecause they help me flow the round. I will not extend offense/defense for you andI expect good extensions in every speech for any argument you want me to vote on
MAKE SURE TO FRONTLINE !ST REBUTTAL IN 2ND REBUTTAL
I ONLY flow 5 seconds overtime, otherwise I WILL STOP, I'll hold up the timer once your time is up
NO NEW INFO AFTER 1ST SUMMARY
I DON'T CARE IF YOU CUSS
Don't be mean in cross, I don't care about anything you say in cross otherwise, if you make an argument put it in the next speech, or it won't get flowed.
Have fun!
I'll disclose after the round.
Policy and everything else:
I don't really care what you do, run whatever as long as you explain it.
Aydan Thomas (He/Him)
I debate PF
If you bring me a snack or a pen; plus 5 speaks.

PF:
K's are interesting but it has to be dumbed down. Only then will I evaluate. Theory is also exciting but I wouldn't suggest it for novices but if you want to you can.
I am a flay judge. You're going to have to persuade me but only if it is on the flow. Lying is not Persuading. But if you win an argument against your opponent and it flows through I will be voting off of that as well.
I don't care how fast you speak but if it's too fast I will yell clear. Make sure that I can understand it as well. But just share speech docs for safety tho.
Don't be mean to your opponents. Debate is an educational activity. Also don't talk if ur opponent is giving a speech. This will get you downvoted.
I disclose after round.
good luck.
