Back in the day, I was a high school debater (Hutchinson Trinity Catholic). More recently, I coached high school debate (also at TC) for five years. I prefer the classic style of debating with weight given to speaking style and elegantly developed arguments with direct clash. I appreciate courteous manners.
I would categorize myself as a policymaker judge with expectations that all stock issues will be met.
I am a flow judge. I am ok with fast talking, but if I can't flow it is too fast (I will try to indicate this through the camera).
I don't like kritiks, so if you run one, please have a good reason and explain it well.
Stock issues are important to me, but not necessarily the sole issue of my ballot (BUT if something is glaring, I will vote on it).
I am fine with a good Topicality argument. I am ok with counterplans if they are run well and carefully explained.
I will not do any of the work for you. If there is an obvious contradiction, but it is not pointed out. I won't consider it.
I love a good disadvantage with a direct link to the affirmative case.
In rebuttals, I greatly appreciate impact calculus and weighing the round.
Things I don't like: redundancy, claiming that the other team "lied" about something, condescending remarks, generic arguments used as a timesuck.
I consider it an honor to be judging -- thank you for choosing to debate!

** Assume that I am a flow judge, but lay on the topic
If you want me to vote on an argument, it has to be in summary and final focus.
I appreciate world comparisons, weighing, and logically explained arguments.
I do not like speed. I will not flow your arguments if I do not understand what you are saying.
I will decide your speaks based on the clarity and content of your speech.
In general
***Before you start your speech tell me which side of the flow you are starting on, and sign post clearly as you go along.
***Don't be a jerk.
***Please do not shake my hand.

heyooo, i’m avianna (any pronouns) and i’m a current PF debater at brooklyn tech !!
let me make some things very clear:
- i want CLEAR and ENUNCIATED speaking. i can’t deal with spreading, mumbling, etc. as long as you speak clearly and not too quickly, it’s chill. i WANT to give out good speaks. however, this doesn’t mean i’m against giving low speaks.
- i am basing wins off my flow. which means that as long as you carry your points all the way through the round, it gets factored into my decisions (and lead to your potential win !!)
- PLEASE have impacts in your constructive. you NEED them. they better be numerical too !! it’ll make your weighing so much easier for you (and for me lol)
- speaking about weighing, PLEASE WEIGH !! tell me why your impact is more important and matters more than your opponents. strong viable impacts will get you the win, trust.
- i don’t really care about cross. cross isn’t something to be won. it’s for clarification and poking holes in your opponent’s arguments. if you want me to flow anything from cross, you gotta bring it up in your next speech. this being said, i am still listening during cross. if i hear any sort of disrespectful or offensive language being used, i’m giving a 25. there’s a difference between being assertive and being plain rude.
- i will not tolerate ANY sort of bigotry (racism, sexism, homophobia, sinophobia, etc). debate is supposed to be fun and be a safe space for people.
tldr: make my job easy for me !! weigh, weigh, WEIGH. explain why i should vote for you in a clear, easy to understand way. and don’t be a bigot.
now that the serious stuff is out of the way, here’s some extra stuff !
- i swear i’m very nice and don’t bite !! follow me on ig @aviansmoon :)
- if the tourney allows, i will disclose. if you have any questions about my decision after the round, message me on instagram (and actually tell me who you are so i know who i’m talking to lol)
- i make a lot of facial expressions, even during my actual competition rounds, so don't be worried about them. i can be making a sad face when i'm actually really pleased with how the round is going lol.
- i like making small talk before rounds !! debate tournaments are literally the bestest for socializing. i’ve made so many good friends from tournaments and i think that more people need to start being friendly with their opponents. they can end up being super chill <3
that's all :) peace n love, good luck !!

(TL;DR I am a tech judge, not a huge ran of theory or k and please extend properly if you want an argument evaluated in the round)
Hi! I am Steven (he/him) and I am a current Junior Varsity PF debater at Brooklyn Tech.
Add me to the email chain: slinkh5657@bths.edu
If you send speech docs with fully cut cards (for constructive and rebuttal) to minimize calling cards time (and add me to the email chain), +1 speaks
Here are just some of my preferences:
General
I am a tech > truth judge 99% of the time, which means that I flow everything throughout the round, even if I know it isn't true.
Please don't spread. I can handle a little speed, but not too fast, or else that will probably impact your speaks. Just speak thoroughly and clearly and you'll be happy with your speaks.
Don't worry, I will not flow crossfire, unless something that occurred in crossfire gets brought up in another speech. The only time I'll flow cross is if there is something I didn't get when flowing and its a clarifying question.
If you want a pic of my flow just ask after the round ends and I'll be more than happy to send it to you.
Please use all of your speech time, that's extremely important.
Constructive
- HAVE IMPACTS!!!
- Please don't run prog arguments - I'm not super familiar with them, with the exception of a Cap K. Also if your going to run theory, be VERY CLEAR about it, because I'm not super duper familiar with that either
- I'm fine with Frameworks - I've ran them a buncha times. If there is no framework or your framework isn't extended throughout the round, I default to utilitarianism, the most good for the most number of people
Rebuttal
- Signpost please
- Give me an off-time roadmap from here on forward, because it helps me as a judge. The second thing I love after signposting is off-time roadmaps and if you do them, you'll get good speaks. (If you don't know what this is just ask me before the round and I can tell you/teach you how to do one)
- For second rebuttal speaker, I would suggest sticking to frontlining -> refuting, but whatever works for you, just please signpost
Summary
- Extend your points from Constructive and Rebuttal otherwise it doesn't make it onto the flow and doesn't factor into my decision
- I'd prefer you collapse, just to make the round less messy and to give you more time in final focus to weigh (this is just something I like to do - I really highly suggest it)
- This is the latest in the round to start impact weighing. If you don't I will be very, very sad.
Final Focus
- Really, just tell me why you won the round
- Write my RFD for me and make sure to do impact weighing
Be respectful of your opponents and have fun in the debate round. If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them. Also, if you make me laugh or make a minions reference, +1 speaks. Also if you reference the movie up + .5 speaks.
Last thing, I enjoy a great clash on arguments throughout the round. If there is a lot of clash, I will give high speaks to everyone in the debate round. Have fun and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask me, because after all, this is all a learning experience.

Hi everyone! I'm a sophomore and I debate PF for Stuyvesant. (she/her)
My email: sofiapisarevadebate@gmail.com
(I want to be added to the email chain)
How I evaluate:
-Tech>Truth
-Warrant all of your arguments.
-Signposting is very important, esp if you want high speaks.
-Extend your case through all of your speeches, otherwise I won't evaluate it.
-Extensions should not be blippy, you must extend your uniqueness, link, and impact.
-You must be consistent in the back half of the round; if you didn't bring it up in summary, don't bother bringing it up in final focus. I won't evaluate it.
-You must weigh. Please clearly state when you're moving on to weighing, and weigh your turns, or else I won't grant you offense.
-I will evaluate prog if you can explain it clearly and simply.
Some logistics:
-Please do not go over 10 seconds in speeches.
-I'm fine with spreading, but be reasonable lol
Be a decent person, or else I will give you low speaks. Let me know if you have any questions before round!

Hello, my name is Suleman Ranjha I go by he/him/his I'm currently debating in Brooklyn Technical High School and I have around 3 years of experience with policy debate. I'm debating at the Varsity level so I have experience with a wide variety of k's, da's, cp's, etc. So don't be scared to run something else because of my preference, my preference is that you run what you are best at/most comfortable with.
Policy: In a debate round, I will vote on anything whether it be fw, k's, da's, etc
I'm fine with spreading I just request that you signpost and go slower on the tags
When you are explaining an argument explain it to me like I'm a 7-year-old, make sure you explain each part of your argument, and even when giving an impact be articulate and explain it to me like I am a 7-year-old
Naturally, I will deduct speaks and you will lose the round if you are racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, etc.
I'm fine with open cx and for an email chain here is my emails sulemanranjha0@gmail.com
TLDR: Claim, Warrant, Impact and explain your arguments as if I am stupid and I do not care what you run.
Make sure you enjoy yourselves and have fun
P.S. extra speaks if you can make me laugh
Kritiks
I love Kritiks I think they are the best part of debate but it doesn't mean that I will be more inclined to vote on them it just means that I have to view them with a higher standard as I myself am a K debater
Make sure your links are specific and even if they arent specific in the 1NC contextualize them in the neg block based on stuff they say in CX or what their cards say or historical examples.
To keep it quite straightforward I don't think many alternatives are very good so even if you do explain it, there is more focus on the link debate which turns case.

Before speeches, give an outline of what you are about to say (off time roadmap). This helps me know where you are in your speech. Throughout your speech, especially in rebuttal and summary, make sure to be clear about what you are talking about. If you are refuting your opponents arguments, give a brief summary of your opponents argument first and tell me which contention the point was made in.
In your final focus, tell me why you win. This involves explaining your impacts and why they outweigh your opponents impacts. Try to do this in your summary speech as well, but I will not penalize you for spending summary rebuilding on your own points and refuting your opponents'.
In crossfire, show me your talent as a speaker. This is where I will be really looking to determine speaker points. Don't let it get too heated, though. Try not to speak about one topic the whole time.

Hi!
So I'm a highschool PF debater.
In terms of speaking preferences I don't have a lot- just basic stuff, like making sure you're speaking clearly and be (at the very least) civil to your opponents and me.
Case/ Argument wise, I will take note if a team doesn't seem to be providing sufficient evidence, however it will not count towards my ballot substantially unless their opponents bring it up in their speeches. I like weighing as it makes my decision easier, but being able to de-link your opponents' impacts all together is even stronger.
But overall just have fun :)

Hello, my name is Ayrah and I am a sophomore student in high school. I have debated public forum for three and a half years, and this is my second year of judging debates. That being said, here are a few of my preferences/tips for when it comes to a round:
1) I don't take crossfire into consideration unless you bring up what was said in your speeches. So, if you managed to get your opponent to slip up during a crossfire or perhaps you answered/rebutted their questions/points cleverly and really want to showcase that to me, you should include it in your summaries, final focuses or rebuttals. Be weary not to drop any arguments.
2) I don't mind if you talk fast, just don't spread. I will time you but I also recommend you time yourself to be able to know when and how to pace yourself.
3) Weighing is very important to me, because your weighing is pretty much selling your arguments to me. I would like to see weighing in the summary and especially final focus, and I wouldn't mind seeing it in rebuttal speeches as well. But don't make your weighing just one sentence such as "We win on scope because we affect more people because [insert basic response]" etc. I'd like to see you elaborate on your weighing because again, that is a big part of what sells your arguments to me. In addition, when you state your contentions during your first speech, I need to know why your reason for or against an argument matters because again, you want to emphasize that your contentions matter (impact) and aren't just a list of pros or cons. Also, make sure you don't have any defensive arguments or else you have little to no impact.
4) I prefer the use of a framework but make sure it isn't anything like "If we prove to you that the pros outweigh the cons we win" because that's rather obvious and so it ends up being a waste of a few crucial seconds.
5) I recommend you use your prep time wisely and not let it go to waste because it is given to you for a reason. Writing on the spot can be very stressful (trust me, I'd know), but if you learn to maximize your prep time, it will gradually make things easier for you.
I hope this doesn't come off as intimidating! I am no perfect debater and I've definitely had my moments both in the spotlight and in moments I wish I could forget when it comes to debate. Just because I might be older or have debated longer doesn't necessarily mean that I am much better than you. I am just using my debate experience over the course of the past few years to try and provide any insight I can to help you improve, and of course, to try to be a fair judge. With all that said, I wish you good luck!

Hey everyone,
My name is Joanne, and I used to debate HS Public Forum Novice, JV, and Varsity for three years in both speaker roles (first & second) on the Midwood Debate Team. I have a history of judging and training individuals on my school's team (our new debaters) and middle school, so I'm excited to see what you have for me. Here are some tips and tricks to win my ballot and to improve on the long run!
The Basis of How I Judge
Weigh!!! (try out the acronym STAMP or STOMP to help). Maintain your arguments!! You want to convince me, so make sure that none of your strong arguments leave my head as you progress through your round! Also, I cannot compare the arguments made within the round for you because new information is constantly being told.
Get straight to the point and signpost. Fluff does not always help your argument and I won't be able to see the flow of your arguments. Also, you might lose me!!
Overall, make your speeches cohesive. As I like to tell my novice players, pretend you and your partner are working on one essay together. Whatever you both do can impact the rest of your essay (or round in this case)!
Miscellaneous
- In terms of speaking speed: I am OK with anything, but if it's to the point where I cannot make out a word you're saying, then I cannot pick up on your speech. I prefer that you articulate more than try to get every word in your prewritten speech!
- Emphasize specific phrases you want me to take note of because the power of your voices really impact the way your arguments are shown! That's the public speaking aspect of debate!
- If you're carding or quoting warrants, I'm not flowing your citations but do cite so I can differentiate between your claim, etc.
- I have no preference when it comes to truth or tech
- I don't ALWAYS flow the content in crossfire or final focus
My Suggestions Based On My Experiences (for New Debaters)
Use prep time wisely, I will also be timing you. Never apologize for pausing briefly in your speech, it happens and the best we can do is move on. If you have a strong argument/contention, stick with it and build from it like the claim of your essay. Make sure not to act out against your opponent because they're nervous, just like you, and it's not good for your speaker points. I promise debate truly brings you new friends and connections, even the most unexpected ones :)
Good luck, and I am very eager to be your judge! If you have any questions or want to know more about my experience debating/advice, I'm happy to talk.
