Speech Judges Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideMy background: I am a former CEDA debater (1987-89) and CEDA coach (1990-93) from East Tennessee State University. Upon my retirement in August 2021 I've judged numerous at numerous debate tournaments for PF, LD, IDPA, Parli, and Big Questions (mostly PF and LD). (FYI, when I participated in CEDA it was quasi-policy, not true policy like it is today.)
Speed: I can keep up with a quick-ish speed - enunciation is very important! Pre round I can do a "speed test" and let you know what I think of a participant's speech speed if anyone wants to. I was never a super speed debater and didn’t encourage my students to speed.
Theory: I am familiar with topicality and if other theory is introduced, I could probably understand it. (I also used to run hasty generalization but not sure if that’s still a thing or not.) Theory is best used when it’s pertinent to a round, not added for filler and needs to be well developed if I am expected to vote on it. If you are debating topicality on the neg you need to provide a counter definition and why I should prefer it to the aff.
The rounds: Racism/sexism etc. will not be tolerated. Rudeness isn’t appreciated either. I do not interject my own thoughts/opinions/judgements to make a decision, I only look at what is provided in the round itself. Re: criteria, I want to hear what the debaters bring forward and not have to come up with my own criteria to judge the round. My default criteria is cost/benefit analysis. I reserve the right to call in evidence. (Once I won a round that came down to a call for evidence, so, it can be important!) As far as overall judging, I always liked what my coach used to say – “write the ballot for me”. Debaters need to point out impacts and make solid, logical arguments. I appreciate good weighing but I will weigh the arguments that carried through to the end of the round more heavily than arguments that are not. Let me know what is important to vote on in your round and why. Sign posting/numbering arguments is appreciated and is VERY important to me; let me know where you plan to go at the top of your speech and also refer back to your roadmap as you go along.
Cross Examination: a good CX that advances the round is always valued. If someone asks a question, please don’t interrupt the debater answering the question. I don’t like to see a cross ex dominated by one side.
In most rounds I will keep back up speaking time and prep time.
I hope to see enjoyable and educational rounds. You will learn so many valuable skills being a debater! Good luck to all participants!
I regularly read policy pieces from trusted sources, so I do have good general background knowledge for Public Forum debate topics. Trained as a scientist, I will evaluate the round based on whether you have strong and relevant factual evidence, whether you use sound logic, and whether you clearly communicate your case. Sharp and on-point rebuttal and crossfire are plus. I expect everyone to be respectful no matter how tense the debate becomes. I strongly discourage the debaters from being over-aggressive in tone/language or asking questions unrelated to the debate topic.
Hello debaters!
I'm a parent judge, I've judged 7 tournaments, so I am ok.
I do not have much experience on the debate topic so please make sure to explain everything very thoroughly. Please do not use too much debate jargon as I do not understand most of them.
Please do not run any squirrely arguments, because I will have a hard time understanding them.
I will try to be a tech>truth judge but please don't make things too unbelievable.
English is not my first language, so please talk slowly and clearly so I can understand you. If I can't understand what you are saying, I won't be able to vote for you off of it. Also, please signpost and make it clear whether you are talking about your case or the opponents' arguments. Make your speech easy to follow. This will make it easier for me to understand your points and vote for you.
If you bring up sensitive topics, have a trigger warning. Please also avoid bringing up politics, religion, race, etc. if it is rude or derogatory.
If you talk very fast or unclear, I will take off speaker points.
Please be respectful to your opponents throughout the round and maintain a sense of seriousness.
Most importantly, I prefer confidence over anything else. Even if you don't know the answer to a question, present yourself well.
Good luck everyone!
Hi! My name's Sierra (she/her) and I'm a sophomore at UPenn studying Comms or International Relations and Consumer Psych in Wharton. I competed in PF and LD for 3 years in high school but primarily did LD. I also dabbled in extemp debate, big questions, extemp speaking, and congress. I have experience with local and some circuit debate and I've competed at the state and national level.
Debate:
General Stuff:
- Please do not spread your max speed in LD or PF. I can comprehend a faster than normal pace but if you reach full speed I will not be able to follow. Try to go 60% of your max speed if you're someone who spreads every round. Pleaseeee slow down for taglines/author names
- Please signpost and give roadmaps
- I truly believe debate should be a safe place. If you need any accommodations or feel uncomfortable in a round please please please send me an email (smarelia@sas.upenn.edu)
- If you plan on reading heavy content in round please give a CW and let us know before the round starts. I'm ok with basically all heavy topics but a cw is always appreciated
- If you run/say anything racist, homophobic, or ableist you will not win my ballot
- I know debate can be stressful so just try to make the experience as pleasant as possible and be nice
LD:
I mainly did trad debate in high school and always appreciate a solid trad line by line debate with solid fw BUT it is cool if you run other things. Just keep in mind I am not as well-versed with K’s, narratives, theory, etc. so just make sure you explain what you’re doing well-- I should not have to fill in the gaps for you. Also, if your opponent clearly has no experience with progressive debate and you know this and still run something progressive your speaks will reflect that. Debate should be as educational as possible and when the round has a clear imbalance from the start it makes this hard.
- Tech>truth but things need to be warranted. If there's something that has 0 warrant and is just blatantly incorrect I won't vote on it
- If you and your opponents FWs are different give me a clear reason as to why yours is better BUT if the FW debate is close make sure you explain why your side can still exist and win under your opponents FW. This is sooo important because in order to determine the winner I will first go off of who won the fw debate and then who has the most offense under that framing
- I will keep a detailed flow and probably will pick up on dropped arguments. If your opponent drops evidence extend it in the next speech if you think it's critical to the round
- Giving clear voters at the end of the 2NC and 2AR is something I like and think helps a lot. Make my job easier and give a clear reason why you won the round
- If your 1AR is really poorly spaced but you pack a lot into the 2AR this probably won’t help you so just try to pace well (I know this can be hard). It's hard for me to evaluate off of a 4 second response to an entire contention
PF:
- I will flow the round and will miss dropped args
- Use cx to your advantage, it shouldn't be dominated by one side. I hate when people ask questions that start with "Do you agree that..." ask an actual question that pokes holes at ur opponents case plsss
- I value weighing throughout the speeches, not just at the end. This should include weighing impacts, harms, etc.
- Please crystalize the round at the end. Explain why you won and key things you won on
I’m probably forgetting stuff but if you have any questions just ask me before the round. If you have any questions about the ballot post-round feel free to email me or just ask then if you want if I’m allowed to disclose. Good luck!
I am a speech and debate parent of 2 years. I am not comfortable with fast speech. Students should be deliberate with their words, speaking slow and concise. If I cannot fully understand due to fast speed, it will impact my decision. In debate, I look for strongly grounded arguments that are well justified and defended. In speech, communication is paramount.
Please make sense of your arguments and ask for a ballot. I want to do the least work possible as a judge to determine an rfd.
10+ years as a judge. Debate is a game among other things. At this point, I'm pretty soulless and I don't know what more to say than that. The rounds that I enjoy the most are well organized and the debaters attempt to inform clear decisions on how the game should be won.
Fine with all kinds of debate and arguments
Be respectful and cordial to your opponent.
Always stay on the debate topic, don’t wander off onto an irrelevant subject.
Always allow your opponent the opportunity to complete their sentence before continuing to cross.
Follows the structure of an argument (claim, warrant, and impact)
I competed on the national circuit during my junior year of high school under the code “Corona KW”. I qualified to and competed at the gold tournament of champions in PF. Also competed at nationals twice in PF. My senior year of debate was cancelled because of covid. Tech > Truth. Be respectful of one another. Happy to answer questions before the round. Juice WRLD reference in speech is auto 30 speaker points.
