I have been judging various events for 2 years. I always try to bury any personal knowledge or belief about topics and judge solely on what is presented in the round by the debaters.

I look for well-defined arguments that are educational and don't assume previous knowledge. I prefer hearing fewer well-defined arguments than a litany of arguments that are spoken at a rapid pace to deliver as much information as possible. I strongly prefer a debater to not use spreading as a method of debate, it sounds like jibberish to me.

I look for respect toward opponents. I like a natural flow of speech and a tone that is passionate but not shrill.

Please hit the “Do Not Disturb” option on your phones and other devices during the round so that your speeches are not interrupted.

PUBLIC FORUM and LINCOLN DOUGLAS

Speak clearly. You know your case inside and out. However, if you go too quickly, I may miss the genius of your argument. The more I understand your case and your arguments, the more likely you are to win.

I give more credence to evidence that comes from reliable sources. If you only cite cable news sources (unless there is a compelling reason to do so), I suspect that your research may only be skin deep.

Please ask if you plan to "pre-flow" your cases before the round start time.

Debates can be won or lost with me up to the end. A strong final focus will make the difference in closely matched rounds.

In cross-fire I mostly pay attention to your decorum. It is not typically what makes or breaks a debate for me. I want to see what you do with the information in your upcoming remarks.

Public Forum specific - Do not speak with your partner while your opponent is speaking. Passing notes is fine.

CONGRESS

Clarity of expression. Sound interested in the topic whether you are AFF or NEG.

Evidence for your arguments will help your case every time.

Ability to field questions about your speech is more of a deciding factor than how many questions you ask.

SPEECH/IE PREFERENCES

I have not judged speech for several years. Clarity of expression stands out for me. Expression and the ability to make fresh something that you have rehearsed and performed a multitude of times wins the day.

MY EXPERIENCE

High school coach for 2019-Present. Coach LD, PF, and student congress.

I have judged Speech events, LD and PF over the past 15 years including online tournaments.

I prefer if speakers wait for all judges to respond that they are ready before speaking. A balance between presentation and substance is a must. Say your sources clearly and explain with specifics.

What I'm looking for is a clear, concise argument. Humor is appreciated, but all jokes should be in good taste. I want to see good preparation from competitors as well asadaptability- if you don't have something written, and the splits are bad, switching sides shows dedication. Questioning is an essential part of debate, so you should do that. Zoning out and only speaking when necessary will not do you any favors. Decorum is also an essential part of debate. You should be not just courteous but kind to your competitors. PO's should not just be charismatic but quick as well. The most consistent issue I see across tournaments is PO's taking too long to find the next speaker, whether it be during questioning or actual speeches. Other than that, do your best and pay attention.

Hello :) I'm a parent judge, I've judged a few speech events and congressional debate.

This is my third year judging - I judge Congressional Debate and Lincoln-Douglas, and occasionally have the pleasure of being entertained with speech performances. I have been a practicing attorney for 26 years, both in the trial, transactional, and appellate worlds. While in public practice I spent significant time drafting model legislation for use by the multiple states and testifying on its behalf in the Maine Legislature. I love policy. I love the art of persuasion. I value the ability to argue both sides of any issue. I enjoy pointed and concise argument. Be professional, be kind, and, most importantly, have fun.

I have been judging all forms of Speech and Debate for 5 years. I competed in Congress during my time as a competitor

I prefer to have a structured debate that has a progressive flow on both sides of the argument. Aggressive debate is fine but competitors should remain cordial to each other throughout the debate. All debate is point structured, so the win or loss is allocated to the competitor who both makes the better point and defends best against their opponent.

Organization is key for me as a judge. Your debate needs to follow a logical order with cohesiveness, if I can't understand the argument than I will have a much harder time judging it.

The most important aspects of a debate in terms of wins and losses is an evidence based approach that addresses all arguments in a manner of completeness. Leaving an opening within the debate is a sign of lack of preparation and will be judged accordingly. I expect all competitors to be aware of NSDA rules and regulations within their debating structure.
