Florida Blue Key Round Robin
2021 — NSDA Campus, FL/US
Congress Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideCongress
I competed primarily in this event on the state and national circuits. I look for
1. content and interactions within the arguments that are made in the round
This means having robust argumentation and relevant refutation. Pinpoint the biggest arguments of the round and interact with them somehow. I pretty much expect the round to go author -> constructives -> decent refutation -> crystals.
2. rhetoric that is appropriate for the theme of the speech/argument and is meaningful
3. delivery (fluency, appropriate tone and variation).
Traditional CX is not that important to me, just answer the question. Direct CX is more meaningful, and how well you do here does indicate to me how confident you are in your own arguments, so don't take this too lightly.
The PO does NOT start with the 1 and get dropped per mistake, but they're very likely to place in my top 8 (where in the T8 depends on how well you do versus the quality of debate in the round). POs that frequently make mistakes will probably not place in my top 8.
Extemp
This was sort of my secondary event. I'm looking for a thesis/umbrella that does actually respond to the question, and each of your points to fit under the umbrella and have a direct response to the question as well. Speakers that can provide specific context for their arguments will place well. In general I look for content > delivery, however delivery is still important; having transitions and effective AGDs/conclusions (along with basic delivery things like fluency) will probably help your rank in the round.
Debate
I pretty much never did PF/LD/CX so more nuanced argumentative techniques are lost on me. Please don't read theory or Ks or whatever, I don't really know how to evaluate them so I will probably end up voting you down lol. Overall, treating me like a relatively experienced lay judge is your best bet, big thing for me is just signpost really well so I can clearly see where you're at/ what you're responding to. I'll likely give 30 speaker points unless I really felt that I couldn't understand you.
Other IEs
Never did them, so I'm just looking for a good performance.
Hi! I'm Ricky (she/they) and I'm a third year at Cal Poly SLO majoring in Ethnic Studies. I was a Congress kid, so if I get put into another event for judging please keep that in mind :)
I am open to theory and things like Ks, the largest thing is just spreading for me. If you spread too fast I will have trouble keeping up but you don't have to talk super slow just be mindful.PLEASE GIVE ME A COPY OF YOUR CASE IF THIS IS PF/LD/CX, etc.If this is Speech/Congress PLEASEdon't use any cookie cutter speech openers like "My opponents arg is like a cone of cotton candy, it seems nice at first but when you take a closer look, it's fluff and no substance' plssss thats so corny lol.
Also if this is Congress, PLEASE CLASH! Clash is what makes the event fun and exciting to watch. If you PO more then likely you will be getting a 3-5.
Feel free to ask me any questions before the round!
Heyoo and Howdy, Its Jomi,
I have been Competing, Coaching, and Judging for going on 8 years now and I'm 21 so that says a lot about my wild amount of commitment I have towards this activity.
Mainly competed and coached extemp and congress so that is where my best critiques would come from since those are the events that I know the most about, however, I am proficient in knowing PF and LD since I have judged tons of elimination rounds for those events and have friends in the events so they teach me the game.
I would say no matter the event it always comes down to three solid principles for me
Logic without evidence
Quality of evidence
Speaking and execution of rhetoric
Logic without evidence meaning how solid on a logic understands deductive or inductive reasoning is the argument, to the point that at the least from a basic philosophical level can I consider that argument valid but not being true because that would require evidence.
Quality of evidence is what sets an argument to being a good argument because if your evidence is timely, relevant, and flows within the speech or case then that sets you apart from the round. Good evidence balances arguments, Bad Evidence breaks arguments
Speaking and execution of Rhetoric meaning simply how well are you conveying your speech and case in your delivery, even in Policy debate, if you want the judge to hear something import and round defining then you slow down and say it with conviction. How well do your voice and your inflections convey your narrative especially on the impact analysis which to me is the most important parts of arguments especially;y on a human level is to be important
Most of all, be respectful and courteous to your judges and especially to your opponents because if you are rude, condescending, sexist, racist, you know the deal if it's bad and I catch it, expect the worst result from me and expect for me to back it up. So just be a respectful person and we will be all good.
For WSD I like clear argument engagement that includes thoughtful weighing and impact analysis. I prefer debates that have colonial and imperial powers reckon with their history (if its germane to the topic). When it comes down to relevancy and impacts/harms, I prefer debates that show how their resolution (whether we're going for opp or prop) will benefit or improve black and brown communities, or the global south.
Interp overall: I pay real close attention to the introduction of each piece, I look for the lens of analysis and the central thesis that will be advanced during the interpretation of literature. When the performance is happening, I'm checking to see if they have dug down deep enough into an understanding of their literature through that intro and have given me a way to contextualize the events that are happening during the performance
POI: I look for clean transitions and characterization (if doing multiple voices)
DI: I look for the small human elements that come from acting. Big and loud gestures are not always the way to convey the point, sometimes something smaller gets the point more powerfully.
HI: I'm not a good HI judge, please do not let me judge you in HI. I don't like the event and I do my best to avoid judging it. If that fails, I look for clean character transitions, distinct voices, and strong energy in the movements. Please don't be racist/homophobic in your humor.
INFO: I'm looking for a well research speech that has a strong message to deliver. Regardless of the genre of info you're presenting, I think that showing you've been exhaustive with your understanding is a good way to win my ballot. I'm not wow'd by flashy visuals that add little substance, and I'm put off by speeches that misrepresent intellectual concepts, even unintentionally. I like speeches that have a conclusion, and if the end of your speech is "and we still don't know" then I think you might want to reassess the overall direction you are taking, with obvious exceptions being that we might literally not know something, because its still being researched (but that is a different we don't know than say, "and we don't know why people act this way :( ")
FX/DX: When I'm evaluating an extemp speech, I'm continually thinking "did they answer the question? or did they answer something that sounded similar?" So keep that in your mind. Are you directly answering the question? When you present information that could be removed without affecting the overall quality of the speech, that is a sign that there wasn't enough research done by the speaker. What I vote up in terms of content are speeches that show a depth of understanding of the topic by evaluating the wider implications that a topic has for the area/region/politics/etc.
PF
Public forum debate is for the PUBLIC. So I expect debate that is accessible and inclusive to all audiences.
The speaking rate can be moderate to moderately fast; however, I don’t think you serve yourself well or the community going any quicker than that.
All arguments must be made by summary, or I will not be able to evaluate them in the final focus.
I prefer debate to be polite. Be nice to all competitors. Using offensive language of any kind, including but not limited to racist/sexist/ableist, will result in low speaker points and an automatic loss.
I judge arguments based on the order they are presented. I will go from top to bottom of the flow at the end of the round to make my decision. Please address the speeches that came before in the round, and make sure you are responding to the other team.
Evidence is significant to me. I want you to include the author/organization and date. Feel free to email me and competitors to start a chain.
Ultimately, have fun. Keep it entertaining. And keep it debate!
When judging any style of debate or speech I need the competitors to have strong annunciation and a good pace. If you are speeding through your content I cannot properly judge the round.
In terms of LD, make sure you are properly defining your Value and Value Criterion, you are keeping your framework up throughout the debate, and you are directly refuting your opponent's arguments.
Although I judge heavily on speaking style, at the end of the day whoever wins on the flow wins on the ballot.
Hey everyone, I debated on the national circuit for 4 years and am currently a first year out. My philosophy for Congress is that this is inherently a speech and debate event; your ability to argue is just as important as your public speaking skills. This isn’t to say that if you have the best arguments in the round but subpar speaking you’ll be at the bottom of my ballot. Rather, in order to win a round you need to have both. A few additional things I want to emphasize since these are the most common comments I give:
- CLASH: If you speak any time after the sponsorship, you MUST have some sort of clash. If someone before you gives an argument that directly challenges yours, you need to explain to me why they are wrong and you’re right. Otherwise, I won’t believe anything you tell me and likely won’t rank you. This also doesn't mean namedrop one person and call it a day; explain to me why the warranting in someone's argument is incorrect or why your impact is better than someone else's
- LEGISLATION CITATIONS: Actually tell me what the bill does and how it links into your argument. Remember, you researched this bill for hours while I did not. Cite the section of the bill that causes your argument and explain why it happens
- EVIDENCE: For me, evidence is a major deciding factor in ranks. All impacts must be quantified, studies and journals are always superior to op-eds, and anything that is not common knowledge or basic logic needs a citation. Due to the lack of evidence challenges in this event, people typically slack off on evidence. You will not get away with this if I’m judging you.
Last thing I will say is the presiding officer is always considered in my ranks. If you give me no reason to correct or say anything to you, you will be guaranteed top 3 on my ballot. Other than this, there’s nothing out of the ordinary in terms of what I’m looking for. Have good structure and arguments, stay active, be polite and you’ll be fine. Don’t stress too much, good luck and have fun :)

I've been coaching and teaching Debate (as well as the AICE courses Global Perspectives & Thinking Skills) for the past 14 years.
For LD/PF/Policy
Even though I have experience on the circuit and enjoy different types of cases, I am not a buyer of the belief that the technical should rule because sometimes format is not as important as content & understanding what you are running. I would consider myself a truth over tech although it will come to the clash provided not my own opinion on the truth. I will stick to the flow unless someone gives me a good reason to vote for them that is true and benefits the debate/educational event. I believe that kritiks, theory, LARP, etc... are all beneficial to learning and play into strategy, so I will vote in favor of anything IF you are able to prove the link is logically clear and strong enough in regards to what your opponent says is the reason for why I should not accept.
I do NOT have a preference for framework/cases - I've heard almost every kind by now and all types have won and lost my vote. Extinction impacts bore me without link work done, so I'd appreciate you at least have some linked harm impacts before extinction level even if final impact is extinction.
I can handle speed (even spreading) pretty well by now - if there is an issue with understanding or hearing I will say "clear" and will also check cards at the end for anything I missed...but please keep in mind that there are certain aspects in a construction that maintains well with speed and other areas that don't (i.e. - if you need me to understand how a philosophy or theory applies then allow me to absorb each part before rushing to the next because those are building block arguments, so missing one part can make the whole thing fall).
Congress:
This is a role playing event - I would like you to act better than our current congress :) I'm big on arguments... not on summation evidence (the kind that is just a quote that someone said the same thing as your claim). I like you to talk to us...be charming or intelligent or both if you really want my top scores. I love this event because when it's good it's so good. Have fun, be smart, and don't leave the chamber during session unless an emergency - there are plenty of breaks and I appreciate when students that don't take extra ones.
I am an experienced coach and judge. I have competed, coached and judged in all areas of speech & debate.
I am a 'tabula rasa' judge, which for me means that I will listen to any reasonable argument. I am always interested in hearing creative approaches to any resolution. However, I fully support the format, style and philosophy of each debate and speech event.
I am not adverse to rapid speaking, because debate time is limited. BUT I will not condone 'spreading' as a tactic. If you insist you win because the opponent did not address all of your issues, I may or may not accept your premise.
Evidence is primary to any good argument. You should be able to coherently present your evidence with citation in every instance. Referencing 'cards' in a case is ambiguous, since I will not have your case in front of me.
In all Cross Ex portions, LISTEN to your opponent. Address their concerns and their rationale for opposing you. Be civil and understand they have as much a right to be here as you do.
I will not make your case for you. I may be very familiar with the resolution, strategy and line of reasoning you are using, but I will not assume you even know what you are talking about. You have to know your case and be able to defend it.
In Congress, competitors must listen to the line of argument and offer unique and relevant arguments. Repeating points or delivering a prepared speech that does not advance the debate is poor practice and means you do not know the bill. Logic and analysis are fine, but a warrantless argument will not have a very big impact.
I do not rank POs particularly high. A competent PO will score near the middle of a typical Congress round.
In Extemp, I want to learn new things, hear unique ideas and understand my world better.
In LD, I am neither a traditionalist or progressive; I want to hear a values-based argument founded on a good philosophical framework. Values are precursors to behaviors, so there is no solving of problems or plans of action.
Competed in Public Forum, Congress, Extemp, and WSD in high school 2014-2018. This will be my third year judging WSD nationals and am looking forward to seeing everyone debate.
The most fun rounds I have are the ones that address the heart of the motion and actively display critical thinking.
Please be friendly to your opponents.
