Debate Events:

I graduated from Plano West in 2018 and competed in my Junior and Senior years in PF and IX. I approve of wearing fedoras in round.

I'm not the picky type, so I'll just be going over some general things.

Treat me like a more lay judge, meaning you will need to explain things as if I have never been anywhere near debate in my life, and will need to be clear. Spreading should be minimal as if I can't understand, I will not be able flow it, and that certainly won't be helping your case. With that in mind, be loud as well. That tends to help with clarity.

Speaks: I'll be lenient for the most part, so expect high points, within the 28-30 range. Unless you're being uncivil, in which case, expect something lower.

As for things within the round itself, the usual will apply. Have warrants, don't fire off as many cards as you can without purpose, have warrants again and make sure you weigh your arguments.

Most importantly, BE CIVIL. Especially in crossfire, or you'll lose speaker points and potentially more.

Congress:

Direct me to the exit, because I probably wandered in by accident and am definitely lost and in the wrong room.

I am a Varsity Debater in PF for 2 years, qualifying for Nationals both years. I am okay with speed, but if I can't tell what you are saying then there is a low chance I will vote on it. All arguments need to be extended across the flow, as well as unrefuted attacks. Explain all arguments thoroughly and provide depth on refutations and cross-application. You should be telling me how I should be voting on the round. Arguments and evidence need to be directly interacted with and not just telling me that they are wrong because of this evidence, showing across the flow why I shouldn't take that evidence into account when voting.

I am an attorney and a christian minister who wants to judge. I like to see that you came prepare and ready to win your round. You need determination in anything you will do with your life so let’s start from now. Please present your arguments clearly and make sure to tell me why you should win this round. Use cards, evidence, sources, examples and whatever else you can to support your arguments! Only because you said so won't be enough. Less is better than repeating similar points. If you can’t prove your arguments, if you can’t turn your oponen arguments either I will vote you down. Reading is fine but make eye contact with the judge and audience if they are any, even if is online. I allow audience if they are in silence and if they respect others. Speedy speech is fine as long as you are understandable. Please use prep and cross examination time wisely, I probably have another round after you so I can’t waste time. Time yourself but if the alarm sounds please finished your phrase, thank you. Enjoy what you do and good luck !

I am a typical PF judge. No real paradigm since PF is not plan or value driven. I like to see well developed arguments and effective speaking. I will listen to any argument as long as it is reasonable.

Stock issues are key to any CX round. 

I am not a fan of speed. If I can't flow it, I won't consider the argument. 

I am fine with a healthy pace, but don't like a full on scream-and-gasp, stomping spread; I like to be able to actually process what you say. Be sure to emphasize key points and signpost. (If I don't flow it, it is unlikely that I will vote off of it). I like to hear authors' credentials and heavily frown upon power-tagging and heavy paraphrasing. Don't tell me, "I have a card that says..." unless you actually read the card and citation. I want to hear actual application of evidence/analysis through the round (not just shells/blocks), so explain to me how you actually interact with the opposing side or I will get frustrated as judge. Weigh impacts and pull them through framework; I overwhelmingly vote on offense that supports framework. Rudeness and condescension will do you no favors for speaks. Note (for what it's worth): I am a former policy debater and interper from a traditional circuit (competed in high school and college) and have been coaching LD, PF, Congress, and speech events across multiple circuits for years and judge all events. Please avoid confusing traditional with lay, as I'm fine with debate jargon, etc. Feel free to ask me any clarification questions before the round.

Background

Currently the head coach at Southlake Carroll. The majority of my experience is in Public Forum but I’ve spent time either competing or judging every event.

General

You would probably classify me as a flay judge. The easiest way to win my ballot is through comparative weighing. Explain why your links are clearer and stronger and how your impacts are more important than those of your opponents.

Speed is fine but if I miss something that is crucial to your case because you can’t speak fast and clearly at the same time then that’ll be your fault. If you really want to avoid this issue then I would send a speech doc if you plan on going more than 225 wpm.

I do not flow cross so if anything important was said mention it in a speech.

I would classify myself as tech over truth but let’s not get too crazy.

Speaking

Typical speaks are between 27-30. I don’t give many 30s but it’s not impossible to get a 30 from me.

I would much rather you sacrifice your speed for clarity. If you can’t get to everything that you need to say then it would probably be best to prioritize your impacts and do a great job weighing.

Any comments that are intended (or unintended in certain circumstances) to be discriminatory in any form will immediately result in the lowest possible speaker points.

PF Specific

I’m probably not evaluating your K or theory argument at a non-bid tournament. If you’re feeling brave then you can go for it but unless the literature is solid and it is very well run, I’m going to feel like you’re trying to strat out of the debate by utilizing a style that is not yet a norm and your opponents likely did not plan for. If we're at a bid tournament or state, go for it.

Don’t just extend card names and dates without at least briefly reminding me what that card said. Occasionally I write down the content of the card but not the author so if you just extend an author it won’t do you any good.

I have a super high threshold for IVIs. If there's some sort of debate based abuse run a proper shell.

I’ll understand your LARP arguments. I’ll be able to follow your spreading. I can evaluate most K’s but am most comfortable with topical K’s. I will understand your theory arguments but typically don't go for RVIs. I would over-explain if you don’t fall into those categories and adjust if possible.

I am a Varisty Pf debater. I have qualified for nationals freshman and sophomore year. I enjoy a clean flow with good clashing arguments. I am ok with speed but if you go so fast that no one can understand you I will not flow it. Be confident when you talk and be sure to project your voice. Please do not make racist, sexist, or rude comments to each other or opponents.

First speaker- Be clear and confident when you speak

Rebuttal- Go line by line on the flow to get the best speaker points. Going line by line is also the best way to communicate points to your judge (me). Don't just argue that your evidence is right and your opponents are wrong, tell me why I should vote for you and why I should trust your evidence

Summary- Collapse and crystalize the round in order to clear up misinformation through the round. Most important speech in my eyes. DON'T DROP. SHOW ME HOW YOU WIN

Final Focus- Give voters/ Impacts

Hello Debaters! I have competed in Public Forum for 3 years and got 3rd place at Nationals this summer. I am cool with speed, but if it's too fast I might not write it down. Make sure you keep the debate organized. For instance, go down the flow when you speak and make sure your rebuttal is line-by-line. I also like off-time roadmaps. I won't flow crossfire, but I will be listening. Finally, make sure to not be rude.

I have been a parent judge since 2016. I mainly judged debate (LD/PF) and IE but sometimes also filled in for Congress, World Schools and other speech events.

I am pretty much a lay judge who votes off the flow. I am okay with speed as long as you are not spreading. Please keep in mind that I may not be necessarily familiar with the topic. So if I can't keep up with what you say, I can't weigh it and judge you holistically. During debate, please attack your opponent(s) case but not your opponent(s). Be respectful and don't be rude. Otherwise, I will dock your speaking points or give you the loss entirely.

My judgement is pretty much based on the following:

1) how you structure your case/argument,

2) your delivery; If you want to extend, extend things clearly across verbally (when extending don't just refer to card names, I want to see you extend what the evidence is actually saying/arguments in general),

3) be respectful and professional

Debate is not just a competition, it is also a journey. I am a part of your journey and want to do my part to make it a memorable experience for you. Go have fun and enjoy the moment & each other!

Speed: I can handle it, but I would prefer not to see it. I think that skills students learn in debate should be transferable to other activities outside of debate.

Arguments: I have experience both participating in and judging PF and LD. If framework is introduced to the round, I prefer to see arguments link to the framework. I also tend to vote for competitors who weigh impacts. In LD, I tend to prefer traditional LD arguments, but I am able to flow other arguments and will vote off what is said in the round.

Public Forum Debate - Purist when it comes to style and argumentation. No spreading please. Arguments should be simplistic and accessible for any person to understand. In the end the biggest impacts will win the debate.

I am a lay judge.

I like a slower speech, with eye contact and one that is presented towards an audience. I like a speech that engages the audience, and is clear and concise. It should meet the criteria of the presentation.

Speed of Delivery

· - I am a parent judge, so please don’t go too fast. I would rather you develop a narrative in the round so that I am able to follow you.

· -That is not to say that you have to speak as if I was a child, but rather you speak at a moderate rate (similar to that of a conversation)

· -I prefer the quality of the argument over the substance of material you present.

Format of Summary Speeches (line by line? big picture?)

· -Summary should be slow, but address and condense the arguments in the round. I prefer big picture arguments over line by line. Drop arguments you aren't going to go for

Role of the Final Focus

· -This speech I find to be most important. Please tell me what your final arguments are AND why they are important in the context of the round

-Go big picture. Tell me exactly how I should decide my ballot.

-Please WEIGH.

Flowing/note-taking

· -I don't flow like a professional debater. I will take notes to the best of my ability. I may not catch everything.

· -In order to compensate for my inability to flow like other debate and/or coaches, speak slowly and explain your argument and why they outweigh your opponents.

-On that note, don't spam cards during rebuttal. I much prefer two flushed out responses that are carded and warranted over ten responses I won't understand.
