I've debated middle school policy for a year, high school policy for a year, LD for a year, and I now compete in speech. For high school debate, I've only competed virtually so can't wait to judge in-person tournaments!
Just some tips:
- Make sure you're clear when reading, and especially slow down on tags/plan and CP texts/T (and anything of the sort) and number your arguments. You don't want me to miss out on any arguments you've made because they were unclear. If you need to spread please send the doc (always assume I'll be checking the document)
- Give a roadmap before your speech and make sure to signpost all the way through
- Tell me HOW you want me to evaluate the round and WHY you win on those standards. Be very clear on this. For lack of a less cliched phrase, write my ballot for me.
- Please let me know if you need any accommodations to be made, and if another team asks (and it's reasonable) please respect their accommodations. Adding on, please use trigger warnings before the round and make sure everyone is okay with the topics being discussed. No exclusionary/discriminatory arguments are allowed unless you're looking for the lowest speaks possible.
- If you go for critical arguments (LD/policy) act as if I don't know anything about the argument
- Clash >>>
- Extend everything of importance, all the way from the framework to your impact-level arguments. Guide me through the step-by-step process in each speech.
- I won't vote based on CX unless you specifically tell me to add something to the flow during your speech
- I will time and you can time as well for your own pacing. When my timer rings, you can finish your last sentence but don't start a new one.
- Tech over truth (unless it's way out of proportion)
- No disclosure theory/talking about other people's flowing please (especially if against smaller schools)
- Be funny if you want higher speaks!
- Please be polite and respectful, and have fun!! Don't ruin the spirit of debate :)
I look forward to judging you! Let me know if you have any questions
