Info about me:
Hi! Im Olivia, and Im a 3rd-year congress debater at West High in Salt Lake City, UT. I did PF and Extemp for a while, so I have a feel for pretty much all areas of speech and debate. I was a semifinalist at ASU in 2020, got 4th at the Golden Desert Tournament in Vegas (Feb 2020), and qualified for nationals the past 2 years.
For Debate (PF, Policy, LD)
Im literally the dumbest person when it comes to policy and LD, so in the rare event that Im forced into your round:
-DONT SPREAD. OR AT LEAST NOT ALOT. I cant do speed to save my life, so please, go easy on me. If youre going too fast, Ill call “clear” three times. If you dont slow down after the third time, I stop flowing. So go kinda slow.
-TELL ME YOUR VOTERS. Did they drop your argument? Tell me. Did they concede? Tell me. If you don’t specify your voters, I may not catch them and therefore may not get them on my flow.
-K/THEORY/ETC. Im okay with them to an extent. Remember: Im dumb, so try to keep it simple and sweet.
-BE NICE. Don’t be snarky to your competitors. It makes you seem a lot cockier than you are (probably).
For Speech
-PATHOS, LOGOS, ETHOS. Any good speaker will work with these. Make sure you use all of these.
-CONNECT YOUR LOGIC, AND USE CREDIBLE EVIDENCE. Please, don’t make a claim and then not explain it to me. Connect the dots for me! (also applies to debate)
-SPEECH TRIANGLE. This isn't a make it or break it thing, it just makes everything come together for me!
For Congress
-This is the part where I'm good.
-PARLI PRO COMES FIRST. If youre not following parli, youre not debating. I will keep track of the motions used, and will be very strict with points when it comes to parli.
-EVIDENCE > EVERYTHING ELSE. If you dont have evidence, you cant persuade me. I will sometimes check sources, so be ready to give them to me. Sources like Wikipedia, WordPress, and School Projects won't fly. CREDIBILITY IS KEY.
-REHASH WILL GET YOU POINTS OFF. There is nothing that irks me more than the same 3 points being rehashed 2308903890 times in a round. BE CREATIVE! I love a good reach (as long as you have good evidence to lean on) and I'm a simp (for lack of a better word) for clash!
-VOTERS FOR PO: If you're elected PO, the expectation is that you keep the house moving smoothly, act without bias and follow parli to a T. If you screw up parli, I won't tell you, I expect you to correct it or someone in the house to remind you. Maintain professionalism, a little fun is always good, but don't let it screw up your chance at winning. In no way do I rank PO's lower than speakers, PO's are the basis of a good congress rounds, so make sure you know what you're doing and execute it well. :)
-VOTERS FOR REPS: First of all, mind your dang manners. You don't understand how many rounds I've judged where the Reps act like absolute brats. It's my pet peeve. Have a slice of humble pie, don't act snobby. Your attitude WILL affect your score.
(For Novices) If you're relatively new to this, don't worry. I was like you too, its the worst for novices. However, I expect you to have good presentation skills when speaking, and can put together a good and cohesive argument to convince the chamber to take your side. Of course, writing speeches beforehand is totally fine, but writing speeches in-round is more common in the varsity/national space, so I encourage you to dabble in that! All I want to see is you maintain respect, have a good understanding of parli pro, and can give me a good speech, expect a high score!
(For Varsity) You know what you're doing, I expect you to prove it. If you rehash, I will literally punch a hole in the wall. If you don't know parli, meat cleaver. I WANT CLASH!!!!!! GIMME CLASH AND CRYSTAL AS HARD AS YOU CAN!!!!!!
Overall, just have fun!
