Hi :)

I have ample experience in high-school debate, Lincoln-Douglas specifically. I haven't competed in any other event, but I have enough experience to understand and flow almost any argument you could make. Please refer to the following for more insight on one specifically I look for in a round:

1. Organization/Flowing: Firstly, please give off time road-maps, time yourself, and most importantly signpost :) I can't quite flow if I don't know where to put an argument. Additionally, having voice inflection at the right time helps me flow the most important parts. Also, make sure you come to the round with a pre-flow ready. Also, spreading and speed are fine so long as I can still understand you and there is vocal inflection, ie. I can understand the most important arguments and get your cards/ taglines. If you aren't being clear, or perhaps going faster than I can judge, I will indicate it by using the "raise-hand" function.

2. General Preferences: Please interact with your opponent's arguments. I cannot stress how important this is. Do not simply reiterate the constrcutive. Additionally, I would love to see emotion in your speeches. Monotone and winning on the flow is great, but sometimes a more persuasive and pathos-rich narrative is just stronger. That being said, incorporating pathos into your speeches, especially voters, and of course vocal inflection will benefit you in this round. Lastly, clear voters at the end of a round are a must. Tell me how and why to vote :)

3. Lincoln-Douglas: All my experience is in LD so I have no difficulty judging well here. Roadmaps, clash, and clear/strong key voting issues are all good things to have in your debate. Lastly, I am more than familiar with the current topics. Incorporating the framework debate into the round in a way that is significant in terms of me writing the ballot is something I love to see ie. don't just tell me why your opponent's framework is problematic, but why yours is better and what this means in terms weighing. The best thing is if I can almost copy and paste your voters onto the ballot, and your voters match what should be in my RFD. All traditional arguments are fine.

4. Other events: Without much experience in other events in PF, congress, etc, all I can really say is making compelling arguments. Refer to the general preferences and see what may apply to your preferences from what is put under LD :). Needless to say, I won't be familiar with these topics, so make sure you explain your arguments and any debate lingo for that topic thoroughly. Also, don't drop important arguments.

C. Impact Calc (a worlds comparison too as a bonus)

E. (Though this won't heavily impact the ballot) A strong cross

A. Don't be rude offensive, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, you get the idea. Debate is a way to share your ideas, but you must do so in a respectful manner

Similar preferences to those below. I still value clarity and clash. For Congress, I value presentation, delivery, and style as well. Most of all, be your authentic self. Make passionate arguments you care about. Discuss the real-world impacts. Be respectful of your opponents and have fun!

Here are some preferences:

I prefer traditional NSDA LD debate. If you spread, run theory, and/or kritiks, I will do my best to keep track but I do not yet have the experience to judge it yet. I'm getting better at it, though, so if you have more "circuit-type" argumentation, be sure to signpost and explain.

It is also my belief that skilled circuit debaters can be just as skilled at traditional debate (take a look at NSDA Nationals 2011 and 2018). And this year's NSDA National Champion competed at this same tournament a couple years ago. So there is lots of crossover.

Stanford 2018

Public Forum debate was designed with both the public and the lay judge in mind. For this reason, I'll judge your round based on the side that presents the clearest, best-supported, most logical argument that convinces the public and the public's policy makers to vote one way or another on a resolution.

I appreciate it when you explicitly state when you are establishing a "framework," making a "contention" or claim, providing a "warrant" or "evidence" and analyzing an "impact."

For speaker points, I value poise, eye contact, gestures, and pacing (changing your voice and speed to make effective points).

Finally, since this is JV Public Forum, we need to have a "growth mindset" and understand that this level of debating is developmental. JV Public Forum debaters are trying to improve and ultimately become varsity debaters. Winning is obviously important (I've coached sports for 20 years), but in my mind there is a clear distinction between JV and Varsity levels in any activity. JV is developmental competition. Varsity is the highest level competition.

I've been in debate for a little over a decade now as a high school policy debater, coach for numerous teams across multiple events, as well as professionally at the Bay Area Urban Debate League. Essentially, do what you want. Debate is a unique educational and competitive space, please make the most of it. I will vote on most things if you give me a good enough reason. I do not lean towards traditional or K/performative debate. Both are good and valuable. Again, do what you want. Have fun. Be nice to each other.

I like Policy Debates. I prefer non-extinction impacts. Please either use a value/value criterion, or clearly explain to me how your framework works and how to evaluate the round under it. Please refrain from using buzzwords uncommonly known by lay parent judges.

You can run Kritiks, but I won't know your lit base, so please err on the side of over-explanation.

If you run theory then you need to explain to me your model of debate and its implications for my ballot -- again, no buzzwords please as typically won't evaluate frivolous theory. I need to see an actual violation in round.

I have been judging LD and PF debates for about 6 years. I do flow cases so it will be great if you could provide me with an off-time roadmap and signpost your arguments. I judge based on tech>truth.

It is important to have a clear framework, so make sure that you state that this is contention 1, subpoint 1 etc. Please extend your arguments and make sure that you have cards for your evidence since I do read them. I like clash so you have to defend your contentions during cross examination.

Please be respectful to your opponent during cross examination. Do let your opponent finish their question or sentence. I will sign my ballot the second that I hear any discriminatory language.

Hello debaters, here is my paradigm
I will be weighing this case based on the qualities of points, not the quantities. I prefer clear weighing from each sides on the impact of their case. Be respectful to your opponents. Good Luck!

Please introduce yourselves and state the topic before the round begins. Also state Road-map (OFF TIME) and tell me where you are going. It helps me understand your case better. As a rule I do not time road maps.

Please avoid snarky comments and approach the arguments with politeness and respect.If someone gets nasty with you, stay classy and trust me to punish them for it with speaks.

I understand your case more when there is voice modulation in your speech, reading as is from a screen makes it hard to follow and seems uninteresting. I love to see when you speak with passion and when it seems like you really mean what you are say.

Don't have to ask me if I am ready before beginning each section of the round.

Please manage the timers yourselves.

hey! I debated PF throughout middle school and I do speech and debate at presentation high school. it's best if you treat me like a flay judge...I definitely will flow the round.

just a couple notes:

speaking: speed is fine, but I would prefer it if you don't spread. I'd much rather be able to understand your argument instead of being confused about what it is.

important stuff: you need cards, but more importantly warrants. extend your links, impacts and arguments in general (if you don't, it gets lost in the flow and it will be harder for me to go back and find it). please signpost! tell me where you are going (roadmap) so I know where you will be on the flow. also, unless an argument is repeated in a speech, I won't flow any argument from cross although I'll still be listening.

theory: i'm not an expert, so do it at your own risk. personally, I've only used/encountered it a couple times.

weighing: probably the most important part (if you do it right!). weighing needs warrants and impacts, so make sure to actually use them. if you don't weigh, i can't see the impact. do it!

in-round attitude: be respectful and sensitive. there's no other way to say this. if you need to give a trigger warning about an argument, do so before the round starts. the issues that y'all debate about are real-life and they actually affect people. we're all aiming for a productive debate. that being said, during cross, you should not be talking over/interrupting each other but it's still important to have clash. it's ok to be passionate but not rude. other than that, have fun! i'm glad that all of you are pursuing this activity!

Background: I am currently the captain of Wilcox High School's LD Team and I am a varsity debater. I have a little bit of experience in speech as well.

General Comments:

- Please be respectful to your opponent.

- I LOVE Clash. However, always remember that there is a very fine line between argumentation and disrespect.

- I am okay with spreading to a certain extent. If I think you are going too fast, I will let you know. Since speech and debate is an educational experience, double check with your opponent to confirm that your speed is okay for their understanding too.

- I'm not the best at understanding K's and Theory. If you would like to run one, that is okay, but make sure you explain it to me in easier wording during the round so I am able to properly understand. Additionally, if you know that your opponent is unable to respond to K's and Theory, don't run it.

- I will be taking notes and flowing.

- Unless it is repeated in a speech, any point made in cross will not be written on my flow. (I will still be listening to Cross, but if you want to benefit off of a claim made in cross, make sure to repeat it in your speech)
