Varsity PF Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideBackground: I did Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, and Informative Speaking for four years during high school, eventually earning a four-year national tournament qualifier award and breaking into out rounds at the NSDA national tournament with my PF partner my senior year. I graduated from UMN-Twin Cities in December of 2020 and am now working as a paralegal at a law firm specializing in immigration.
How I judge:
1) Speed- I can keep up with speed, but please make sure to articulate yourself. If I can't understand the words you are saying at the pace you're saying them, then I can't flow.
2)Framework/Narrative- I don't care if you have a framework at the top of your case if you're not going to use it. That being said, I'm not going to weigh a round based off a framework you haphazardly threw together in your two minutes of prep time and put at the top of your summary. Weighing your arguments is important.
3)Theory/Kritiks/Counterplans/Plans- Whatever.
4)Rebuttal/Summary/Final Focus- In rebuttal, make sure to extend all arguments that you would like to appear in summary and final focus. The only thing that I require is that the second team address the attacks put on their case in their rebuttal and that the first team address the attacks put on their case when they're consolidating in their summary. Otherwise, I don’t care what way you give your summary or final focus, but the most important thing here is weighing.
Most of my high school background is in public forum and congress. At the college level, I still compete in public forum and parliamentary.
I will typically always vote on impacts. So impact calc will be important.
I’ll probably ask you to flash me cases and evidence so I can follow easier.
Speed is cool with me, I just ask you don't go as fast during analysis as you would while reading cards.
Otherwise, I’m pretty easy going. Feel free to ask me questions before round for any other preferences.
Signposting is incredibly important.
I believe in quality of evidence over plethora of evidence.
This isn't a voting factor for me, but I value professionalism and persuasiveness.
Not new to PF debate but appreciate debaters who are deliberate in telling me what contention is being addressed throughout the round. I believe PF should be accessible for anyone to judge, so don't go too fast. Make sure impacts are realistic, and weighed. Finally, and most importantly, honesty matters and evidence should be used to support your cases and statements. More the better.
I competed in Varsity PF for two years at Hempstead High School. I’ve competed in and broke at nats, reached semis at the IFL State Tournament, done pretty well at locals, and went to ndf. With my low experience with judging, you should probably consider me a flay judge. Have preflows ready before round. I will probably disclose unless told not to. I use he/him pronouns.
Treat your opponents with respect. Rudeness will hurt speaks and in extreme cases can result in a loss.
My email is sameerfaruquee2002@gmail.com. I would appreciate being added to your email chain for evidence.
Flowing - I can flow pretty fast speaking. Just don’t spread please. If you do, you’re liable to kill your speaks and lose me on the flow. Please signpost as much as necessary. As for timing, I’m cool with a ten second grace period, but after that is when I stop flowing.
Evidence - Please do not do card dumps. Paraphrasing is fine granted the evidence is not misconstrued. I will only call for evidence in the case of possibly misconstrued evidence or if a specific card is critical in the round.
Framework - if there is no framework, I will assume a cost-benefit analysis.
Speeches - I’ll buy any argument given there is ample warranting behind them. If speaking first, do not cover your own case in rebuttal. Second Speaking teams should be covering both sides of the flow during rebuttal. Please do not give blippy responses or try to extend through heavy ink. I don’t do sticky defense. Collapse and extend in summary and final focus. I would prefer a single solidly extended warrant and impact than multiple weak extensions. Extensions should include articulating the entire link chain. The most important thing for me to vote for you is weighing, but be sure to explain your weighing. Don’t just say “we outweigh on magnitude”.
Crossfire - I’ll only flow something from cross if it comes up in speeches. Crossfire will affect your speaks
Progressive Arguments: I honestly don’t know much about progressive debate. If you do run something like Theory, warrant it just as well as you would warrant everything else.
Former policy debater (with some PF here or there) who now judges largely PF.
What's important to me?
Evidence - I believe that evidence (especially quantitative evidence if you can get it) is bedrock to a well constructed contention, rebuttal, etc. As a judge, I will tend to believe statements made with supporting evidence more readily than logical arguments about what would be "likely" to happen.
Summarizing - Judges are human. We miss cards. We misinterpret contentions. Do everything you can to be clear and reiterate why what you are saying matters. Taking 15 seconds at the end of a rebuttal to summarize can do wonders for getting me on board with your side.
Pacing - I can definitely appreciate someone whose delivery is quick and articulate; however, please try to pace yourself so that your opponents and I have the time to process everything you are saying. Sometimes talking a bit slower and emphasizing key points can do wonders. I cannot judge your arguments if I can't hear them because you're spreading like crazy.
Etiquette - When criticizing the opposition, please refrain from personal attacks. Aggressive crossfire questions poking holes into the opposition's arguments can be persuasive; however, I tend to cool a bit about what someone is saying if they drift into the realm of disrespect. Debate is fun, and remember that we're all friends before, during, and after the round!
Hi, I'm Parker or Mr. Klyn, whichever you are most comfortable with.
I am the Director of Forensics at Theodore Roosevelt High School (Des Moines, IA).
I coach national circuit PF and hopefully LD soon.
"I believe judging debates is a privilege, not a paycheck," and "Most judges give appalling decisions." <-- Two quotes from a legendary coach that illustrate my views on judging. My promise to you as a judge is always giving you 100% of my attention and rendering decisions that I honestly believe in and can defend/justify.
I judge for three reasons:
- I love debate and enjoy judging.
- Judging great debaters allows me to grow as a coach and judge.
- Fulfilling my team's obligation.
Also, I'm on the 2024-2025 NSDA Public Forum Topic Selection and Wording Committee. Send me ideas!
Public Forum
Add me to the email chain (klynpar@gmail.com). In national circuit varsity/bid PF rounds, send speech docs with cut cards ahead of (1) case & (2) all speeches where you read new evidence. (i.e. not a link to a google doc, not just the rhetoric, etc.) This is non-negotiable. (1) It makes the debate and by extension the tournament run on time and (2) it allows me to be as non-interventionist as possible.
I’m a tech/blank-slate judge, I flow on my computer using Flower. Judge instruction is key. The best debaters essentially write my RFD for me in final.
The above means that I will vote on anything. However, due to time constraints and neg's ability to go first, I generally believe the format's best debates are substantive rounds over the resolution. With that being said, run whatever arguments (substance, K, theory, Spark, etc.) you would like in front of me if you feel they will earn you the win. Debate is a game.
Be kind and respectful, I will never change a ballot on this but I will lower speaks especially when it comes to experience/age/resource imbalances.
I vote on offense/defense, that includes framework and specific weighing mechanisms.
Speed is fine, go as fast as you want.
I always disclose my decision alongside some feedback. Feel free to ask questions afterwards. Let's leave the round feeling like we had a positive, enjoyable educational experience.
Speaks are based on technical execution, not some arbitrary standard of what makes a "good speaker." My speaks are pretty standard although I find I am particularly generous (29.5+) to great debaters and particularly stingy (27-27.9) with debaters that miss the mark or make major strategic errors. In order to promote good norms, I will bump your speaks by +0.1 each if you (1) send speech docs with cut cards and (2) indicate to me that you open-source disclose.
Long story short, Just win baby~!

I have begun to coach LD. I will wear my debater's Des Moines Hoover Husky Howler Novice LD tournament champion ribbon with pride for all eternity. (:
Overriding judge philosophy is blank slate/no judge intervention. Debate's a game, do what you have to do to win.
Still learning natcirc LD. However, I've watched dozens of those types of rounds on YouTube and am confident in my ability to evaluate debates. You are welcome to run whatever you want, but based on what I've watched, I am most comfortable with: Policy/LARP, Ks (of both the Aff and the debate space), and topicality/non-friv theory i.e. disclosure. Not confident in evaluating performance or academic philosophy, this would probably require lots of warranting, but if that's your lane, don't feel the need to adjust to me.
I will default to voting on offense extended through the round, but judge instruction can convince me to vote on almost anything. Please attempt to write my ballot for me in the 2NR/2AR. Ask me questions ahead of time for any clarifications.

Congress
If you're in Iowa and you do the literal bare minimum (speak as much as you can, provide sources for your arguments, REFUTE OTHER SPEECHES, ask questions), you're practically guaranteed to finish in the top half of my ballot. Seriously, why are so many of y'all just seemingly along for the ride!
Smaller things: Crystallization speeches are lazy unless it's like the 7th speech of a bill and there has been actual clash the entire way down (make actual arguments instead!), being charismatic/entertaining is a good tiebreaker but doesn't replace a well-argued speech, good POs are hard to beat and bad POs make debate no fun (unless literally nobody else was willing to do it -- then I'll reward you on the ballot), treating bills as having real-life implications around the world >>> LARPing as US legislators

Debate thoughts:
(This is a pretty self-indulgent section so only read if you think I provide useful insight into the activity):
You should always presume the other team, the judges, and the audience are acting in good faith. Any accusations or even implications towards someone cheating or otherwise breaking the rules should be "stake-the-round" moments -- that is, you better be willing to take a min speaks L if it's unfounded.
One of the single dumbest things I see in competitive debate is this trend of "I'll give u 0.5 speaks if u reference The Office" or "+1 speaks for bringing me a coffee!" It's pathetically and brazenly anti-educational and borderline exploitative (of children!), not to mention it'd be so stupid for someone to get like a 4-2 screw because another team mentioned a dumb meme in their speech. I presume good intentions from people in this community but I am quite skeptical of those who do this.
Speaking of judges, I have zero patience for people who use their ballot/RFD to bully and demean. Congratulations, you're a college-educated adult and you found flaws in a 14-year-old's argumentation. If I'm on a panel or spectating a round where a judge's RFD is moving into bullying territory, I have no qualms cutting them off and reporting them to tab.
And finally with regards to judging -- I allude to this above, but I see far too many debates, especially here in Iowa, where the extent of judges' RFDs is "I didn't like your case" regardless of the actual content of the round. That makes me sad, as it invalidates dozens of hours of preparation and strategy-building between competitors and their coaches. It breaks my heart when I see a well-prepared team lose because the judge just "didn't buy it." I only vote on what is communicated to me within the debate. I do not care how unlikely it seems or how incoherent the link is.... if it's that obvious, the opposition should point it out, not rely on me to intervene and make that evaluation on my own.
Debate as an activity is incredible. Obviously I'm biased but I genuinely think it's the single best thing high schoolers can do with their time. If you're reading this you're probably a nerd or a competition freak (or both) but you also should be proud that you are involved in this thing we do. It makes kids smarter, more confident, better at speaking, better citizens, more critical of the world and its power structures while also more open to alternative ways of thinking.... and it's exhilarating and fun! If I could just coach debate all day I'd take that job in a heartbeat. I often find myself getting emotional when judging high-level debate rounds because of the talent, passion, prep, and dedication in front of me, and I swell with pride when my debaters develop new skills and deploy them.
Feel like quitting debate because you don't think you're any good? DON'T! My first ever tournament I went 1-4 at the Des Moines Lincoln Railsplitter. Even worse, we started 0-4 and were power-matched against the only other 0-4 team at that point -- we only won because our opponents forgot what side of the topic they had chosen. I promise, it gets better. I have a team that went 1-5 and 0-5 at their first two bid tournaments in '22-23 who just picked up a PF Gold bid at Blake '23. Keep at it and you will blossom.

Debate stock**, do flay LD. No spreading. Actually try to talk persuasively, not just at 300 wpm. I am not that fast anymore, I do not coach, and I don't even read the topics. You have been warned.
** I like fun arguments still and can get quite bored of stock. If you run zanier things, just take the time to explain better.
TL;DR:
Efficiency, strategic collapsing, weighing >>> generic card dump
I do not like seeing theory shells in PF. Please do not do it. Debate substance. Pretend that I'm a very well-read parent judge at this point
I did PF and believe debate is a game meant to be done with some flair. i’ve judged lots of ld, pf and parli (circuit, trad, whatever) at this point, can handle speed (hit me with your best shot), but I’m also older and don’t spread in my daily life. By the way, the faster you go, the more you should enunciate... People are getting worse and worse at spreading... If you can do LARP, please do LARP. If you don't LARP, procedural arguments are also good (I love T debate), theory is fine, just be clean on the flow and your extensions.. Be mindful that I am not super familiar with it. K's are okay, heed the warnings in bold below.I won't vote on any argument I don't understand; my threshold for voting on something convoluted that you spread at me is much higher. That being said, if you explain a creative, strategic argument well and carefully --> more speaks and my ballot. Entertain me, and you will be rewarded.
Condo bad
"The easiest way to win my ballot is to follow these three rules. Pick an issue and defend against responses constructively with more than just a re-assertion of your argument. Weigh the link against other links and the impact against other impacts. Use this issue to tell a clear story that leaves me confident when I vote."
I study engineering, so I like to consider myself an engineer/scientist in training. if a card is important to my decision, I call for it. If I find that you misrepresented it, put it out of context, whatever, I won't consider it and will tank your speaks. That being said, clever indicts against your opponents' evidence, or knowing their evidence better than they do will majorly help your speaks. Show that mastery of the topic in cross and in your speeches.
Tech >> truth, I can vote on anything and everything, and I don't believe in any form of judge intervention whatsoever. That doesn't mean you should run terrible -ism arguments, just that you can and I will consider it in my decision like any other position. However, my threshold for your opponent to call you out on it and drop it is much, much lower (because these arguments are always objectionable under normative ethics frameworks, and you have to do extra work to prove otherwise, I default normative ethics if there's no FW clash here).
for judging LD/Policy/Parli: **HATE FRIV THEORY and tricks, NOT SUPER FAMILIAR WITH KRITIKAL POSITIONS except very neolib, biopolitics, and especially, THE FEM K. If you run a K, explain it well. I've definitely gotten slower (I'm 5 years out and I no longer coach), so don't spread so quickly that you start foaming at the mouth. I can handle 300-500 wpm (this is different from online debate comfort levels, read that section). Stock issues, case, LARP, love science centered cases --> good. Don't bite each other in cross/flex.
If you run friv theory despite my warnings, and the round becomes a friv theory/trix wash of a massive shitshow on both sides, I will drop the team/debater that read the first shell. Consider yourself warned. ~~
If I stop flowing or put my pen down, you're either going too fast, or you're wasting your time by saying what you are saying, so you should switch strats immediately.
I hate frivolous theory & RVIs, so I have a much higher threshold for voting on it. I prefer case debate, but if you don't wanna do that, that's your call.
Online Stuff:
It's become clear to me that over the online format, spread is just much more unintelligible than usual. Slow down. Speed is just you compensating for inefficiency, and I'm more receptive to efficiency than anything else. If you are efficient and stay below / around 250 wpm, I will boost your speaker points by a lot. Thank you for adapting to the format.
I'm also a lot more receptive to ableism, speed K args that are triggered by shitty spread in the online format. this is an actual issue and problem that I think matters given the circumstances... Haven't heard a good shell for this, but if you run it, I will like it.
~~~
PF prefs:
I think first speaking teams are structurally disadvantaged in PF (first summary is arguably the hardest speech to give), so if there is no offense generated in the round, absolute wash, then I default to the first speaking team.
Please weigh. Probability, Scope, and Magnitude. Impact Calculus is good. Weighing needs to start in the summary speech, maybe even the second constructive. In general, good debaters tend to be very good at weighing. Comparative statements are also good: "Even if they win [arg tag], if we win [arg tag], you vote us up because [....]"
NSDA has given summary speeches another minute.. 2nd summary better have defense, both summaries better have comparative weighing. I have a MUCH LOWER tolerance for ships passing in the night now.
Give me a roadmap, and follow it. Signpost frequently. Card by card extensions are good, and please have good warranting. 2nd summary better have defense. Don't be a jerk in x-fire.
On evidence, if a particular card is very important to my decision, I will call for it. If you misrepresented it, then I won't consider the offense/defense it generated on your side. Evidence ethics are terrible in PF. If a team tells me to call for a card, I will call for it. If all your cards seem to be terrible, I'll tank your speaks.
ONLINE PF SPECIFIC PREFS:
PF usually doesn't have emailchains, but since audio can be faulty, people can cut out for a second, please send me and your opponents the case, cut cards should be attached in a separate document (assuming you paraphrased). This saves everyone time when cards are asked to be seen during prep anyway, and I think it's a net good for education + accessibility.
Hello! I competed in public forum for 4 years at Kennedy High School (2015-2019).
While I do find debate to be strategy based, I prefer arguments that follow a logical well thought out narrative. I keep a flow, but I prefer truthful and reasoned arguments.
There are a couple of things to do to win my ballot:
1. Have a clear narrative throughout the round. This helps me understand which argument is most important to each team rather than having a ton of random arguments that aren't clashing.
2. Extend claim+warrant+impact
3. Extend the cleanest piece of offense
4. Weigh. It is important that you weigh because if you don't I am forced to choose what I think is important and you lose control over my ballot
Flowing
- Signpost! At the end of the round I evaluate what is on my flow so it is important to be clear where you are making arguments.
- I prefer teams to not just say "extend Smith 19"- you need to explain the evidence and what that is directly responding to
- I can handle fast PF speed, but be aware of how fast I can write- speed is not always an advantage if I am unable to write it on my flow in time (also if you do choose to speak faster than normal do not exclude the other team)
Rebuttal
- I prefer well thought out articulated responses over a bunch of blippy responses (quality>quantity)
- I like carded responses, but don't card drop excessively
- For 1st rebuttal just solely respond to the opponent's case- please don't go back to your case because I just heard it and there are no responses on it yet
- For 2nd rebuttal it is your choice what you do strategically. It would be smart to do some frontlining, but I have no personal preference
Summary
- For first and second summary I would like you to extend responses on your opponent's case in order to extend it to final focus
- within this speech it is important to collapse and make grouped responses
Evidence
- I will call for a card if the other team calls for it and it becomes a point of discussion within the round or it you bring up a specific card that is very important to winning your point
- If it takes you more than 2 minutes to find a card we will have to move on and I will cross that card off the flow
K's/Theory
- I have no experience in LD or Policy so if you choose to run this type of argument you need to dumb it down for me. Personally, I would prefer a traditional contention over this type of argument. I am not a fan of disads read in rebuttal.
Other Things
- pre flow before the round! please don't delay
- I am open for discussion after the round, but please be respectful
- I understand rounds can get heated and I like respectful humor and sassiness, but do not be condescending or rude to your opponents
- Have fun!
