I graduated from Strath Haven (PA) in 2016, and I did two years of policy debate there. I just graduated from Hamilton College, Class of 2020. I majored in Chinese and Russian Studies and did two years of APDA (parliamentary debate).

I am okay with pretty much anything in policy debate. I'm just looking to watch and flow a good debate, so please read arguments you're comfortable with and you understand. There's nothing worse than watching someone struggle to answer questions in CX because their coach wrote their overviews and they don't understand anything they're saying in their speeches.
Spreading is cool, just understand that I'll be trying to flow and if I can't catch what you're saying then obviously I can't flow it. I was used to speed in high school, but keep in mind that I'm not doing policy in college, so my ears might need to warm up to it. I would suggest starting slower and gradually reaching your full speed.
If you don't go to the line-by-line, I'll be incredibly annoyed. I don't know much about the topic so that's where you're going to win/lose the debate. Make sure you warrant your arguments, no tag-line extensions please.
I am likely very unfamiliar with the current topic, but as long as your aff/DA/K/CP/whatever is coherently put together and I can flow it, I shouldn't have any problem understanding it.
Topicality
In order for the neg to win on T, every level needs to be thoroughly explained and impacted. I don't want to hear "extend the voters for fairness and education" - that's not an extension. You need to contextualize the violation to the round and do a good job of extending your impacts, as well as answer every argument from the affirmative.
DAs
I think DAs are the most straightforward of arguments to make against an affirmative, and if you have good evidence and use it to your advantage, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to go for the DA and win the round. Turns case args are your best friend in these debates. Aff - please make arguments in your block on every level of the DA if possible, it sets you up incredibly well out of the 2AC.
Kritiks
I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Ks in high school debate. If they're not too complicated, it's obviously fine, but I personally struggle to understand new theory in the span of a single debate round. If you're going to read Baudrillard or Foucault, you'd better understand what you're talking about and be able to explain it and contextualize it to the round. This doesn't mean don't read a K; I'm just saying that I want it to be explained and impacted reasonably well and in an understandable way. If Ks are your thing, read them.
CPs
I like them, just explain and contextualize them. Make sure your solvency advocate actually functions, and try to make your CP as specific to the aff as you can.
K Affs
I feel pretty much the same way about K Affs as I do about Ks, I need a lot of explanation and contextualization throughout the round before I am fully willing to sign my ballot for the aff. Also, please do your best to explain any technical terms you use, especially if you repeat them more than once or twice. I have a lot of experience debating against K affs, but I've only ever really read one, so I'm not that knowledgeable on the arguments you'll be making.
Theory
Honestly, I'm indifferent. If you're going to spread it, however, make sure you emphasize what you want me to flow or it'll be annoying.

I will try my absolute best to avoid intervention while recognizing some amount is inevitable. Anyone who claims to be impartial on every argument is lying. That being said, I strictly believe in the value of leaving the debating to the students.
I debated in highschool but have been out of it this past year, so you may find value in over-explaining or slowing down on certain technical issues. I really do enjoy techy debates though, especially with counterplan competition and topicality. I have an alright understanding of economics as I'm studying it in college (meaning I'm also excited to hear these debates!).
My background is with policy arguments. I have no disdain for kritiks, but bear in mind my knowledge is limited--especially on weird European philosophy. Please don't be discouraged--anything can be overcome with good explanation (and minimal jargon). I'll be transparent on the fact I've never read a K aff and usually went for framework on the neg (typically fairness).
I'll allow most things until the other team wins they shouldn't be; an example is inserting rehighlightings--it's the debaters' jobs to argue over. I'll default to conditionality and judge kick. Dropped arguments need warrants, otherwise the original argument was incomplete.

--i have yet to judge a t-usfg vs. k aff round, but i generally think that fairness is an impact. 1ars and 2ars need to prioritize a few offensive arguments on t-usfg and have to give a robust explanation of what their model of debate looks like.

--for ks on the neg, framework and turns case arguments are the most important things to me. i hate long overviews and am very much of the camp that ~15 second overviews + line-by-line > +4 min overviews + embedded clash. the link story and alt is as important to me as it is to any other judge. (i'm pretty picky about the way the k is presented structurally, especially in the neg block!)

Background;
Debated for 4 years at The Barstow School in high school, and for 1 year at the University of Southern California.
Quick Note on getting easy Speaker Points from me and Spreading;
1) If both teams agree to NOT spread before the round and tell me so, then everyone gets +1 speaks. If any team breaks this agreement, then that team will lose the round.
2) If one team does NOT spread throughout the round, while the other team does, the team that did not spread will get +1.5 speaks
3) If the non-spreading team beats the spreading team, the non-spreading team will receive 30s.
In general, if you want me to flow an important analytic or theory arguments, then you should slow down (60-70% speed). The same is true of tags. I have a relatively high bar for clarity, and if it doesn't get on my flow, then it didn't happen. I'm NOT saying you shouldn't spread, but you should spread with a mind for being relatively clear. This is ESPECIALLY true of permutations and theory args.
Summary of Paradigm;
I've debated mostly policy arguments throughout my debate career, but I do understand the basics of kritiks and will vote on them. For the AFF, I've only ever read policy AFFs, but this doesn't mean that I won't vote for a K-AFF as long as you defend how debate would be like under your vision. I really value teams that can write my ballot for me in the 2NR/2AR.
Affirmatives;
I've really only defended policy affirmatives throughout my career, so this is where I feel most comfortable. By the 2AR (or even the 1AR), there really should be only a single story/impact scenario that you're going for. I don't have a preference for extinction or structural violence impacts, so both sides will have to settle this issue for me.
For K-AFFs, I think that if you can defend your model of debate, than you will win. I think both education and fairness are equally viable impacts for the NEG (or even the AFF depending on how you contextualize your impacts). K-AFF v K debates are something that I haven't really done or judged in before, so if you're NEG, Id recommend either going for T/FW or a simple kritik like Cap.
Counterplans;
I'm down for most CP stuff, even if you don't have a specific solvency advocate (obviously, its better if you do). This being said, if you're gonna read a CP without any solvency ev, you'd better extrapolate in the 1NC how you solve the AFF, rather than explain it all in the 2NC. If you can do that, I'm more likely to view the argument favorably than a generic CP.
Kritiks;
I have debated and gone for a few kritiks, so I am familiar with the basic structure of a K. If you're going for a K, I think you need to clearly explain the thesis of your kritik and in what way it indicts the logic of the AFF. The less buzzwords you use, the better. If you're defending against a K, I think you should first win the AFF is correct and defend your assumptions and how they're made.
Additionally, I prefer links that are not descriptive of the status quo, and would like the explanation of the link to be pertinent to what the AFF does, i.e. "The AFF does X or says Y, which is representative of Z", rather than "The AFF uses the United States federal government, which is bad for A, B, or C reasons"
Topicality;
I am not familiar with the structure of this topic or any popular definitions, so if you debate it well enough, you can probably win any interpretation in front of me.
Theory;
On condo, I largely think that the NEG should hold themselves to no more than 3 conditional off (arbitrary preference). I think the NEG can defend more conditional advocacies and the AFF can say 3 or fewer condo is bad.
I hate getting into more complex theory debates like textual/functional competition, so the NEG should really try to keep their CPs as theoretically kosher as possible
I default to theory args are a reason to reject the argument and not the team, unless specified by the AFF.
Miscellaneous;
- Please don't read new off in the block unless the 2N justifies it
- Don't run theory args purely for the sake of reading theory args (talking specifically about stuff like 10 second ASPEC shell in the 1NC

I have no history as a debater. I am a parent-judge. I've been judging debate for 2+ years. I am impressed by sound arguments. I am not impressed by spreading. I am often annoyed when people repeatedly use jargon, shorthand and acronyms, especially when they do not tell me the meaning of a term the first time it is used.
if you want to use shorthand terminology or acronyms, please be sure to tell me what they mean the first time you use them.
If you assert a non-topical aff, you should make very clear why it makes sense for you to do so. I appreciate focused cross-x and I encourage you to be assertive in the debate setting. However, if you are condescending or otherwise mean to the other side, you will lose points.
I know that debaters enjoy mental and verbal gymnastics - that's fine with me, but I want to know that you understand the core arguments you are making. If the other side asks you to explain in your own words, I hope you are able to do so without looking at a card.
Please feel free to use whatever kinds of arguments you like (e.g. framework, topicality, counterplan, disad . . .). However, as I mention above, you may lose me if you use lots of jargon, and you will lose points if I come to understand that you do not thoroughly understand the arguments you are making.

Experience - I debated for four years at Baltimore City College High School (2015-2019), I was primarily a K debater and mostly worked with identity based arguments, particularly those related to queerness and race. I went to University of Maryland and majored in Public Policy with an emphasis on racial and gender justice. Currently, I work as a consumer rights advocate/lobbyist for a nonprofit that focuses on promoting economic equity. Thus, I imagine I will be familiar with a lot of the stuff under this topic BUT I have not judged or interacted with debate in 2+ years meaning I don't know all the acronyms under this topic and also my threshold for understanding spreading is a bit lower.
TLDR: Read whatever you want in front of me. I have VERY left leaning political beliefs and default to things like hegemony bad, imperialism bad, etc. but you still need to argue that. If you're negative and would like to read a K, that is great. If you are affirmative and you are reading a K, that is great, but PLEASE prove your aff changes the sqo/has any impacts. If policy is your bread and butter, no worries, I have sold out and am literally a lobbyist. I would love some actual clash/engagement with the arguments of the other team.

Paradigm: Just a general overview of how I judge debates: I'm fine with spreading as long as you are clear enough (FOR ONLINE DEBATING SLOW DOWN ON ANALYTICS). I will listen to almost anything as long as it's argued well, to be honest though I really am not a fan of superrr policy rounds (ie 6 off and case). A dropped argument is a true argument (within reason). I like competitive spirit but don't be a terrible person. By that I mean you can get fiery in your speeches and cross-ex but personal attacks are not cool unless they are really out of line (i.e. they said something outright offensive: racist, sexist, patriarchal, heteronormative,etc.). I want to see a good debate so run what you're comfortable with and know what you're talking about please. please actually try and understand the arguments you run and not just read off the blocks your coach or whatever wrote you, I'm not really persuaded by blippy truth claims that aren't elaborated. If you are aff I would like a really clear internal link chain of how your plan solves its impacts, this goes for policy and K affs.
My favorite types of debates are Policy Affs vs a one off K, I think the most important part of these debates are framing, even if your alternative is not super great if you're neg, if i am super convinced that your framing is a pre-req or whatever I will probably vote for you. This is not to say I will always default neg v a policy aff.
I love K affs but please prove why it isn't just the status quo, +.2 speaker points if the 2nr goes for something other than fw/t usfg
To be honest if you want a super nuanced RFD about your high theory K aff don't pref me super high but also I will listen to what you have to say, just explain it really well.
I tend to personally bias things like hegemony, imperialism, and capitalism bad but if you don't explain that in round or give warranted reasons as to why they're bad I'm not just gonna vote for you.
Aff: Read your thing, don't drop case, answer the DAs please, don't make me vote on T that doesn't make sense
Neg: I actually really like topicality when it's reasonable, good framework debates are fun but you're gonna go for a TVA I would really appreciate it to solve at least some of the aff's impacts, I love a good 1 off K round

Background:
I am a former high school debate and speech competitor (mostly Policy Debate, with stints in Public Forum Debate, Student Congress, and International Extemporaneous Speaking) and have judged/coached high school debate for 15+ years. As a competitor, judge, and coach, I have participated mostly in local circuit tournaments in Indiana; Virginia; and Washington, DC. Outside the local area, I have judged at NSDA's (formerly NFL's) and NCFL's national tournaments and a few TOC bid tournaments. I'm familiar with Policy Debate lingo and conventions.
Speed:
I am VERY against speed reading in rounds (both for affirmative and negative teams). I much prefer that teams lay out fewer arguments and clearly articulate them. I will flow spread to the best of my ability, but won’t consider an argument/piece of evidence if I couldn’t understand it or document it within my flow. I will also not vote on an argument that I could not understand/flow, even if the other team drops or undercovers it.
Note: If you are concerned about which content to remove from your 1AC/blocks in order to make it through your arguments at a slower speaking speed, I recommend removing extinction-level impact cards (see below under "Arguments").
Arguments:
I am open to almost all arguments (excluding arguments that demean your opponents/others). I will vote on Topicality, problems with fiat, stock issues, on-case arguments, off-case arguments, generic Disadvantages, Kritiks, reverse voting issues, etc. Admittedly, I am skeptical of extinction-level impact cards (I'd be reluctant to vote for a team if that team's only standing argument was that the other side's advocacy would result in nuclear war). If you choose to run an extinction scenario, you will need to significantly back up your arguments.
I have no inherent objection to conditional negative arguments/multiple worlds/double binds. I will listen to theory, though, on why I should reject those if the affirmative team wants to present that (I recommend focusing on the content of the negative team's arguments, though).
In terms of in-round activity, I want each debater to respond directly to the opposing side's arguments, as well as weigh arguments/let me know why I should vote for the affirmative or negative side. I highly prefer roadmaps as well as signposting (e.g., letting me know exactly which affirmative/negative argument a debater is responding to before reading the relevant cards) within speeches When responding to or extending arguments, note that I find it difficult to follow along when debaters reference cards only by author and date, e.g., "the Smith '15 card." I prefer debaters briefly restate the argument that the author made instead of only stating the author's name, e.g., "As Smith '15 notes in our 1AC Solvency, ...."
Note: I have limited experience with Kritiks. If you choose to run one, you’ll need to explain the Kritik's thesis before you get into the cards (unless the Kritik is made crystal clear by its taglines). You will also need to explain how the alternative can be achieved and why I should view the round using your preferred lens.
I have even less experience judging performative/demand advocacy arguments. If you want to run a performative or similar case, you’ll need to outline the intended action/outcome of your advocacy and how it differs materially from relying on fiat of the US federal government.
I’ve been in situations as a competitor where I had no case-specific arguments against an affirmative case and had to rely on generic arguments. I'm open to generic arguments, including logical arguments that don’t necessarily have cards behind them (e.g., the Plan has a technical loophole that undermines its Solvency). If you use generic arguments, you must make the arguments as applicable as possible to the affirmative case. (For example, I am skeptical of “every use of the state is bad” arguments, but I will listen to "domestic fiscal redistribution is generally popular/unpopular politically, allowing for passage of a harmful agenda item/stymieing an important agenda item." As a corollary, I will be receptive to an affirmative team countering with no-link arguments due to some specifics of their Plan.)
Time:
As a judge, I keep a virtual timer for all competitors’ constructives, cross-examinations, and rebuttals as well as both teams’ prep time. (I will also have a timer for technology time, e.g., emailing or uploading speeches for opponents to view, based on tournament rules.) Once you and your partner stop prep time, please send your speech/cards to your opponents and judges (if needed) and begin speaking as quickly as possible. Please account for time needed to arrange your evidence for a speech, take a sip of water, etc. during your preparation time.
Paradigm
I vote on almost anything if you win the debate. I believe that debate should be an even competition of what happens in the round and how it affects the outside world instead of the other way around. Also don't do anything racist, homophobic, sexist, patriarchal, transphobic, heteronormative or simply disrespectful in round without expecting poor speaker points. It will also affect how I view your argumentation in this safe space.
Spreading
In regards to spreading I'm fine with it just don't start out at full speed I need time to adjust to voices. Also be clear and slow on tags so I can know what you are saying and what I should be voting on. I can't vote on something that I can't hear.
Coach for SA Harlem North Central. Approach to policy debate is stock issues and policymaker. Don't mind spreading but prefer e-disclosure for rapid readers. Prefer a few well-developed arguments rather than many shallow arguments. Prefer resolution of substantive issues over communication. I will vote on Topicality if Aff fails to properly respond. CPs and generic DAs acceptable. Debate theory arguments acceptable. Don't love conditional neg positions but will vote if done correctly. K's are acceptable but want links to stock issues to still prevail, don't want case to go completely ignored by the Neg. I have not found a performative compelling enough to vote on. Will ALMOST ALWAYS vote against problematic language; 100% of the time when opposition team makes it a voting issues.

I don’t flow authors unless you want to draw attention to the quality of evidence, credibility of author, etc. Point it out to me. Otherwise, extend your arguments, don’t just mention the author’s name. And extend/add warrants, even if it’s just important that the other team provided no response. (Again, it helps if I’m on the email chain if you want to draw attention to authors later).
I probably won't flow cx - add it to your speech.
I’ll vote on anything - just tell me what you’re argument is/role of the ballot/what’s important for my vote.
On Ks - make sure you’re clear on all parts of the argument. I enjoy them greatly, but I’m not familiar with anything but the basics (cap K, Abolition K), so articulate the argument clearly please.
Give me an impact calc. On every argument. Especially T. I’m not going to vote on a predetermined sense of abuse. Let me know in round how the argument is affecting you. Or what the significance is for debate going forward.

I am heavy on flow. I love responsiveness and crystalization. Make it easy for me to follow you.

Jargon: I’d prefer students not use it for purposes of clarity. I’m sure audience members, your judge, and your opponents would appreciate this as well. One of the main ways to receive good speaker points from me is to always treat each other with respect.

Value: You should always link your arguments to value. Otherwise, your arguments don’t have as much weight from my view. If you can also demonstrate how your arguments work under your opponent's value, that’s a bonus.

I appreciate off-time roadmaps. I don’t mind “spreading” (fast speaking), but make sure to slow down and enunciate tags and citations. Also, if I find the entirety of your speech to be filled with unnecessary diction, I will frown. Why? Word economy. Lastly, you will note that I stop flowing as soon as the following occurs: information previously stated is being brought up once more, I cannot understand the speaker or your argument is not making sense to me.

Theory: Not a huge fan of T. If you decide to run theory in your case, do know that I will always make my decision based off of what I feel is most important in debate; the educational experience. I avoid making a decision based off of my own personal beliefs or experiences.

If you decide to run a Kritik (should the tournament allow it) I would appreciate your case most if it still acknowledges the round. Stressing a K without continuing to be a part of the entire debate is too dull. Not only should you be clear as towards why the other team is diminishing the value of the debate by means of what they are communicating, but you should also demonstrate that you care about the entirety of the debate.

Throughout the debate, you should aim for pinpointing weak arguments and fallacies. Make it easy for me to flow arguments and be specific. Refer to the flow when covering your opponent's case in rebuttals. More specifically, you should cover all sub-points mentioned in each contention.
- Often times, competitors do not cover an entire contention and generally cover an argument - no. Simplify the process of me disregarding an argument entirely. In rebuttal speeches, cover something that has not been covered before. Do not present old news to the table.

TLDR
The following are just thoughts I have, I will vote for anything obviously excluding things that are racist homophobic transphobic etc.
Tech > Truth but an argument that is less true requires less of an answer to beat it, if that makes sense. You need to have a claim/warrant/impact in order for me to consider an argument (ie. condo in the 2AC cannot be "condo--voter for aff ground" and then a minute of the 1AR)
Framework
Fairness is an impact, but the negative should not just assume I think that. Explain why, or for the aff, explain why not.
I am more persuaded by k affs that are grounded in topic literature, but if you give me a reason to think otherwise, I will evaluate it.
CP
Won't judge kick unless you tell me to
Process CP's are fine but I would prefer a well-researched strategy at least somewhat tied to the topic, smart 2ac perm texts are underutilized
DA
Politics is fine but i prefer a 1nr that does good link spin to a 1nr that card dumps bad evidence

I am a lawyer and lectured this past summer on this year's HS topic at Institutes for the NY UDL and the DC UDL Coaches Workshop and at Summer Institutes at the University of Michigan, Gonzaga, Georgetown and Harvard.
If you run a K, and actually have an ALT that can be proven to SOLVE a problem - - - any problem - - - it would be the first one I have heard that does solve a problem in 18 years of judging debates and then you might get my ballot, but probably not depending on how well the AFF does. If you are AFF and have a Plan that SOLVES a problem without creating more or larger problems - - - you might well get my ballot, depending on how well you debate during the round.
I listen to arguments, favor clash to determine who does the better job of debating, and no matter the chosen framing or style of either or both teams, I judge the debate based on what is said during the DEBATE by the Debaters.
I began high school judging in 1973.
I started judging college debate in 1976.
Between 1977 and 2002, I took a vacation from debate to practice law and raise a family.
Since 2002, I have judged between 40 and 80 Rounds a year in High School and had brief stints judging college and professional debate while "coaching" for the University of Redlands, my alma mater, in, I believe, 2010.
You can debate your own stuff, but I am not a theory fan.
I believe I have voted NEG on topicality four times in 18 years, twice in non-traditional AFF debates and once at the Kentucky RR when I thought the AFF made a mistake and I also thought the NEG made them pay, although a very competent and distinguished judge who was also judging the same round felt differently. So, even in the one traditional debate round where I voted NEG on T, I was probably wrong. I believe in AFF creativity, reasonability which guarantees predictability.
BUT (and and this is a CAPITAL BUT) I like/strongly prefer substantive debates ABOUT the topic area, so long as the Plan is a reasonable illustration of the Resolution.
People who listen and answer arguments well get great speaker points. People who are nice and friendly and not jerks also like their speaker points.
I have had teams run K's and all kinds, types and nature of CP's. The PERM Debate really makes a difference in a K and CP Round. I am not the most philosophically literate humyn being on the planet, so please explain your esoteric K and your even more esoteric K responses.
Cross-Examination is IMPORTANT, so please ask questions, get answers and ask more questions. When responding, please listen to the question that is asked and ANSWER it. No need to fight or argue. Ask questions, Get Answers, move on.
For the clash of civilization people who want to know more about my feelings and leanings, perhaps the best information I can give you is that I listened to a recording of the final round of the 2013 NDT and would have voted for Northwestern had I been judging. The framework debate in my mind flowed Negative.
I enjoy DISADS and case debates. I am particularly fond of hidden Case Turns that become huge Disads.
I know how hard you work and will attempt to work just as hard to get things right.

Default
Debate should be centered on the hypothetical world where the United States federal government takes action. I default to a utilitarian calculus and view arguments in an offense/defense paradigm.
Topicality
Most topicality debates come down to limits. This means it would be in your best interest to explain the world of your interpretation—what AFFs are topical, what negative arguments are available, etc—and compare this with your opponent’s interpretation. Topicality debates become very messy very fast, which means it is extremely important to provide a clear reasoning for why I should vote for you at the top of the 2NR/2AR.
Counterplans
Conditionality is good. I default to rejecting the argument and not the team, unless told otherwise. Counterplans that result in plan action are questionably competitive. In a world where the 2NR goes for the counterplan, I will not evaluate the status quo unless told to by the negative. The norm is for theory debates to be shallow, which means you should slow down and provide specific examples of abuse if you want to make this a viable option in the rebuttals. The trend towards multi-plank counterplans has hurt clarity of what CPs do to solve the AFF. I think clarity in the 1NC on the counterplan text and a portion of the negative block on the utility of each plank would resolve this. I am also convinced the AFF should be allowed to answer some planks in the 1AR if the 1NC is unintelligible on the text.
Disadvantages
I am willing to vote on a zero percent risk of a link. Vice versa, I am also willing to vote negative on presumption on case if you cannot defend your affirmative leads to more change than the status quo. Issue specific uniqueness is more important than a laundry list of thumpers. Rebuttals should include impact comparison, which decreases the amount of intervention that I need to do at the end of the debate.
Criticisms
I am not familiar with the literature, or terminology, for most criticisms. If reading a criticism is your main offensive argument on the negative, this means you’ll need to explain more clearly how your particular criticism implicates the affirmative’s impacts. For impact framing, this means explaining how the impacts of the criticism (whether it entails a VTL claim, epistemology, etc.) outweigh or come before the affirmative. The best debaters are able to draw links from affirmative evidence and use empirical examples to show how the affirmative is flawed. Role of the ballot/judge arguments are self-serving and unpersuasive.
Performance
In my eight years as a debater, I ran a policy affirmative and primarily went for framework against performance AFFs. The flow during performance debates usually gets destroyed at some point during the 2AC/block. Debaters should take the time to provide organizational cues [impact debate here, fairness debate here, accessibility debate here, etc.] in order to make your argument more persuasive. My lack of experience and knowledge with/on the literature base is important. I will not often place arguments for you across multiple flows, and have often not treated an argument as a global framing argument [unless explicitly told]. Impact framing and clear analysis help alleviate this barrier. At the end of the debate, I should know how the affirmative's advocacy operates, the impact I am voting for, and how that impact operates against the NEG.
Flowing
I am not the fastest flow and rely heavily on short hand in order to catch up. I am better on debates I am more familiar with because my short hand is better. Either way, debaters should provide organizational cues (i.e. group the link debate, I’ll explain that here). Cues like that give me flow time to better understand the debate and understand your arguments in relation to the rest of the debate.
Notes
Prep time continues until the jump drive is out of the computer / the email has been sent to the email chain. This won't affect speaker points, however, it does prolong the round and eliminate time that I have to evaluate the round.
I am not a fan of insert our re-highlighting of the evidence. Either make the point in a CX and bring it up in a rebuttal or actually read the new re-highlighting to make your argument.
The debaters that get the best speaker points in front of me are the ones that write my ballot for me in the 2NR/2AR and shape in their speeches how I should evaluate arguments and evidence.

Personal thoughts (on debate): Debate is legit a business. To debate is work. Like yes, enjoy the activity, but after a certain point what is the plan for how you interact with this space (and especially your arguments)?
That said, I do not have the capacity to busy myself with argumentation that is a waste (meaning it lacks intention, a goal, and/or a purpose). I'm deeply intuitive and clock things with ease.

For PF: you can read this paradigm to understand the framework I will evaluate arguments, but the threshold is lower (except for everything I wrote after the Theory section). Do you, have fun. I don't particularly care.

Top of the line: I like ethos. I vote for the team who best articulates a politic that shows an understanding of the world beyond technicalities and jargon.

Speed: If I yell clear twice, more than likely I will default to what I’ve heard and understood. So, if it comes down to the flow, please make sure I understand the important points. For your sake, not mine.

Policy Affs- I need a clear framework for how I am to evaluate the plan (and round) beyond a reactionary response to the negative. I also require a clear link story to the impact(s), and how the plan actualizes a politic to secure a resolution to the harms of the 1AC.
In many words, block out for T. That seems to be a lot of policy teams' weakness when Affirmative.
T/Framework: I think procedurals can be a proper way to contest the aff's methodology and solvency mechanism. That depends on nuance and the way it is read. So, T-USFG: that’s fine, but you're not gonna go far if the block is just surface level on questions of YOUR wants.
CPs: I’m pretty neutral on them. Please just remember to have a net benefit (whether it’s internal or a DA).
DAs: Again, also pretty neutral. In order to justify a win with the DA, I require a very clear and concise link story as well as impact comparison to justify the DA as a takeout to Aff solvency. Like, why is it important? Many times I see DAs be ran and I'm just like... this feels like a huge FYI and still don't know why I should care (judge instruction)...

The K-
Aff: Let the aff be in discussion of the topic. If not, I need instruction as to why I should care. I feel like that's my entire paradigm: why should I care... how should I evaluate the round...?
Neg: I think it’s important for content and form to be aligned. I require strong judge instruction because I refuse to do any more labor than I need to. This applies to Affs as well, but I specified here as the Neg has the burden of rejoinder. Meaning y'all have to win an actual DA to the Aff and/or an outweigh claim.
POMO: I require an advocacy that could easily be materialized or understood in a way that I can intuitively see it solving for the impacts. Examples and analogies would be best.
"Identity": to win my ballot, you have to win your Theory of Power and that your method best alleviates the violence that incurs from power (as opposed to being an 8/9-minute FYI). I'm familiar with many and live in the intersections of many. Black Fem args have my heart tho

Honestly, not much has changed since this last LD update in 2018 except that I now teach at Success Academy in NYC.
Update for Voices / LD Oct 2018:
I coach Policy debate at the Polytechnic School in Pasadena, CA. It has been a while since I have judged LD. I tend to do it once a or twice a year.
You do you: I've been involved in judging debate for over 10 years, so please just do whatever you would like to do with the round. I am familiar with the literature base of most postmodern K authors, but I have not recently studied classical /enlightenment philosophers.
It's okay to read Disads: I'm very happy to judge a debate involving a plan, DAs and counter-plans with no Ks involved as well. Just because I coach at a school that runs the K a lot doesn't mean that's the only type of argument I like / respect / am interested in.
Framework: I am open to "traditional" and "non-traditional" frameworks. Whether your want the round to be whole res, plan focused, or performative is fine with me. If there's a plan, I default to being a policymaker unless told otherwise.
Theory: I get it - you don't have a 2AC so sometimes it's all or nothing. I don't like resolving these debates. You won't like me resolving these debates. If you must go for theory, please make sure you are creating the right interpretation/violation. I find many LD debaters correctly identify that cheating has occurred, but are unable to identify in what way. I tend to lean education over fairness if they're not weighed by the debaters.
LD Things I don't Understand: If the Aff doesn't read a plan, and the Neg reads a CP, you may not be satisfied with how my decision comes out - I don't have a default understanding of this situation which I hear is possible in LD.
Other thoughts: Condo is probably a bad thing in LD.

I’m fine with anything you want to run and I’ll try to evaluate the round with no predispositions.
General Thoughts:
a) Talking to your partner is prep
b) If you're going to be spreading at Mach 2 you should probably send analytics or you run the risk that I won't flow them
c) Speed is fine as long as it doesn't come at the expense of clarity
d) Tech > truth. A dropped argument is a true argument but how much I weigh it depends on how well it’s warranted and impacted out
e) Rebuttals are important! They should frame the round and how I should weigh certain parts of the debate. If you spend less time emphasizing everything instead of spending more time on a few things, I'll be disappointed.
f) Go fun & wild with strats - I love being impressed by uncommon arguments, just make sure you warrant + impact them out. Also try to make the round entertaining - I have a short attention span and rounds are long
g) I love logic, please use it instead of just card dumping and saying dumb stuff lol

I'm a tabula rasa judge. I leave my personal beliefs out of the round. I have limited topic knowledge, so please explain acronyms. I am a policy-oriented debater, but I will vote for anything that is explained well.

Topicality: Love a good T-debate. Fewer high-quality cards are better than more low-quality cards. Give me a vision of what the topic looks like under your interp.
Ks: Not well-versed in most K lit. I'm comfortable judging like cap, set col, security, antiblackness, etc., but I have extremely limited knowledge for high theory Ks. I dislike long overviews. Generally believe that Affs should get to weigh plan. I prefer links to the plan. I like alts that do more than rethinking.
K Affs/FW: I have much more experience debating neg v. k affs than aff v. fw. For affs, once again, limited familiarity with lit. For neg, on FW I prefer listening to fairness/clash impacts.
Counterplans: Functional and textual competition. Tell me to judge-kick. Love aff-specific PICs
DAs: Great. Well-explained case-turns make me happy
Theory: I like theory debates. I generally think condo is good.
For Novices: +.1 speaks if you show me your flows

Good for LARP and passable for K. Unfamiliar with Phil. Not a huge tricks fan, but you do you.
