Speaking rate / speed - An effective debater need not speak at an unintelligible rate. Superior argumentation skills may be demonstrated through argument choice.

Judge background - former college debater (nationals competitor), licensed attorney, high school speech and debate coach.

I use to consider myself a stock issues judge....But I'm slowly moving away from it I'm good with T as long as it's done right. I'm ok with K's and CP's, But I wouldn't bank on winning with that alone. Also I prefer closed CX...and I REALY prefer closed constructive and rebuttals. Spreading is fine as long as I can understand the tag lines.

LD -

Just because I am primarily a policy judge does not mean that I think LD should be like 1 person policy. Small rant: I am tired of us making new debate events and then having them turn into policy... If you are constructing your case to be "Life & Util" and then a bunch of Dis-Ads you probably don't want me as your judge. If you are going for an RVI on T in the 1AR you probably don't want me as a judge. I don't think that LD affs should have plan texts. If I were to put this in policy terms: "You need to be (T)-Whole Res."

Affirmatives should have: a specific tie for their value to the resolution. An explanation on how their Criterion(a) operates in context of the value and the ballot. Contentions that affirm the whole resolution.

Negatives should have: a specific tie for their value to the resolution. An explanation on how their criterion(a) operates in context of the value and the ballot. Contentions that negate the whole resolution.

CX

I tend to consider myself a flow oriented judge that tries to be as tab as any one person can be. Absent a framework argument made, I will default to a policy-maker/game-theorist judge. I view debate in an offense-defense paradigm, this means that even if you get a 100% risk of no solvency against the aff, but they are still able to win an advantage (or a turned DA) then you are probably going to lose. You MUST have offense to weight against case.

Generic Information:

Speed is not a problem *Edit for the digital age: Sometimes really fast debaters are harder for me to understand on these cheap computer speakers.

T & Theory need to be impacted with in round abuse. As the debate season goes on I tend to err more toward reasonability than I do at the beginning of the year. This is usually because as the debate year goes on I expect Negative teams to be more prepared for less topical arguments. This is generally how much judges operate, they just don't say it. I typically don't vote on potential abuse, you should couch your impacts on potential abuse in very real-world examples.

Please make impact calculus earlier in the debate rather than just making it in the 2nr/2ar

Kritiks are not a problem, but I am not really deep into any one literature base. This may put you at a disadvantage if you assume I know/understand the nuances between two similar (from my point of view) authors. **If you are going for a K or an Alt in the 2NR but are unsure if the aff is going to win the Perm debate and you want me to "kick the alt" and just have me vote on some epistemic turn you're only explaining in the overview of the 2NR you are not going to enjoy the RFD. If you think it's good enough to win the debate on with only a :30 explanation in the overview, you should probably just make the decision to go for it in the 2nr and kick the alt yourself.

When addressing a kritikal aff/neg I will hold you to a higher threshold than just Util & Cede the political, I'll expect you to have specific literature that engages the K. If this is your strategy to answering K teams I am probably not your "1."

I don't have a problem with multiple conditional arguments, although I am more sympathetic to condo bad in a really close theory debate.

CPs are legit. Just like judges prefer specific links on a Dis-Ads I also prefer specific Counter-Plans. But I will evaluate generic states/int'l actor CPs as well.

Dispo = Means you can kick out of it unless you straight turn it, defensive arguments include Perms and theory. (My interp, but if you define it differently in a speech and they don't argue it, then your interp stands)

DAs are cool - the more specific the link the better, but I will still evaluate generic links.

Case args are sweet, especially on this year's (2019) topic.



Personal Preferences:

Really I have only one personal pref. If you are in a debate round - never be a jerk to the opposing team &/or your partner. I believe that our community has suffered enough at the hands of debating for the "win," and although I don't mind that in context of the argumentation you make in the round, I do not believe that it is necessary to demean or belittle your opponent. If you are in the position to be facing someone drastically less experienced than yourself; keep in mind that it should be a learning process for them, even if it is not one for you. It will NOT earn you speaker points to crush them into little pieces and destroy their experience in this activity. If you want to demonstrate to me that you are the "better debater(s)," and receive that glorious 29 or maybe even 30 it will most likely necessitate you: slowing down (a little), thoroughly explaining your impact calc, clearly extending a position, then sitting down without repeating yourself in 5 different ways. If you opt to crush them you will prob. win the round, but not many speaker points (or pol cap) with me.

Conflicts: Jenks High School

Experience: I debated for four years at Jenks High School in Oklahoma (2013-2017). I traveled out-of-state and went to state three of those four years. I ran heavy K stuff my sophomore year. A mixture of K and Policy my junior year and mainly policy stuff my senior year.

Education topic: I have judged very few debates on this topic. Do not expect me to know your acronyms or the “obvious” links.

Prep stops when the flash leaves the computer/email is sent/pocketbox uploaded.

Speed: I debated fast against fast people. That being said I don’t judge often and it’s been a while since I debated. So slow down at the beginning to let me get used to your voice. Trust that I am doing my best to flow, but I am not perfect. I will yell clear twice for each team if I feel like you are being unclear or too fast for me. Otherwise you shouldn’t be surprised if I can’t get your arguments on the flow.

General: Do what you do best because most of the times you will be worse if you do otherwise. I try to be as unbiased as possible, but I am imperfect. Don’t make me do work you should be doing. Don’t be hostile. It annoys me and drives people away from the activity I love. As far as post-rounds, I post-rounded too hard after my rounds so I am probably hypocritical on this, but I ask you be civil. I respect the schedule because I have been in tabrooms before and so that will be the primary reason for me to end a post-round. I do believe the judge should be able to confidently defend their decision. I may withhold some things for the sake of time. I’ll try to put them on the ballot. Feel free to ask me about them.

Evidence: I won’t call for much and will only do so if it is disputed or if no one explains it well.

Also do not clip. I love passive-aggressive questions like “do you mind sending me the highlighted version of your evidence?” If I am very confident you are clipping I will vote against you and tank your speaker points. I do this because the activity already suffers from poor representations of evidence and clipping is one of the worst forms of that. I will listen to recordings for proof.

DA/CP: Have good links. Get technical and explain evidence.

Case debates: Spend more time on them and make them good.

FW: I’ve been on both sides of this issue. They tend to get repetitive so try to not make them so. I like generic theoretical arguments as well as state pedagogy ones.

Theory: You need to impact these arguments out for these to be convincing. Be technical and list examples. I usually agree with “reject the argument and not the team,” but feel free to convince me otherwise. 

Random note: Disclosing makes debates better so please do it or have a really good reason not to.

Cross-X: Utilize this effectively. Don’t make me feel like you are struggling to make up questions. Have some planned out. Follow lines of questioning to make a point. Don’t be a bully. I will know when the person being cross X’d is losing a point and you don’t need to keep rubbing it in.

Topicality: Most of theory applies here. I don’t think you need to win in round abuse if you win competing interpretations. Being unfamiliar with this topic means you are going to have to do more work here. I don’t know the cliché T card that people read every round. I personally think definition origins is not debated enough, this effects predictability. 

Kritiks: I read many of these but I only occasionally ventured beyond the 5 or 6 most popular arguments so keep that in mind. Don’t assume I know the literature behind all of your work. Explain the alternative. I personally don’t find the permutation double bind argument convincing (alt should be strong enough to overcome the instance of the aff.) You can make it but don’t plan on this being your round winner. Explain your jargon as you use it. Have good links and explain them. Don’t assume because they have an econ advantage that you don’t have to explain the link to your cap K or your Anti-blackness K. Even if they don’t try to link turn the K, the Links are how you access the impact to your K, so it is still super important to explain them.

I don't have a lot of experience with progressive LD, not as much as much as most circuit judges that you will run into, but as long as you articulate and explain your argument well enough, I should be able to understand it. I am somewhat conflicted with spreading in LD, so I am a bit susceptible to arguments against it in general but if both debaters are fine with it then feel free to go all out. I will say clear 2 times before i stop flowing you all together. I usually am pretty kind when it comes to speaker points, as long as a debater does not say something racist, homophobic, transphobic, or sexist. I do not want to see any attempts to exclude your opponent from the debate space. Develop clear, concise arguments, provide evidence for those arguments, signpost and apply your arguments and have fun.

Speech

I gauge every round based on what is presented. How well do you deliver your material? Remember, no one knows your speech better than you do. I will not know you made a mistake unless you bring attention to it. If you need to take a pause to gather your thoughts, do so.

NEVER TELL A JUDGE HOW BAD YOU WILL DO or HOW UNPREPARED YOU ARE!!!

Debate

I don't mind spreading, but if you are speaking to the point where I can't understand what you say, I will not be able to truly judge your arguments. I look at which person/team supports their arguments the best. I gauge every round based on what is presented.

I have experience either competing or judging every event, so I am okay with anything being run in round (if you can argue it well).

Speed is fine. If you mumble through your speech, don't be surprised if I don't flow half of it.

General:

• Be respectful, but don't waste your time asking your opponents for permission for things like the first question.
• This means treading the fine line of being aggressive and respectful.
• I like to see crystal clear clash on the flow. Please when framing rebuttals go in order down the flow. Do not bounce around.

Value/Criterion

• Provide clear links between your value and criterion and the rest of your case.
• At the end of the day your value and criterion are most important to me in LD. I want to see clear links and evidence upholding those.
