Tips in general...

- make sure you understand your own argument. You're much better off with CP + DA strats that you can explain to me in the context of the AFF than crazy K's or T interps that YOU can't even wrap your head around. I've ran my fair share of those args, but help us all out here -- if you are solely surviving off of pre-made 2nc/1nr blocks I'll be much less inclined to vote for it than things you can explain in your own words. Obviously, if you're a pro at Ks and deep-literature arguments, go for it!

- I default to reasonability. Sorry, I'm a 2A! Unless the AFF is something egregiously untopical, why can't we just let it go and carry on with the debate? Of course, I can be persuaded otherwise... it's up to you!

- the only voters are T and condo. Run as many theory args as you want, but let's be honest, most of them are cheaty anyways. If you can beat the team on the substance of the argument, why waste your time poking at their argumentation? Even though I say condo is a voter, it's honestly not until we get into the 3 or 4+ k/cp range. Again, I can be persuaded otherwise... you tell me!

- "now what?" What does this mean for us after this round ends? We all know that me voting AFF or NEG doesn't really do anything in the real world, but the things we learn are things that follow us beyond the round. So show me what we can all learn from my decision! K-specific: Explain to me how my decision would change how we approach policy-making in the future. T-specific: Explain to me how my decision would impact future debate rounds.

- I <3 clash. No one likes a debate where the two opposing sides never contest to each other's arguments. This is commonly referred to as "two ships passing in the night." That's no bueno! How am I supposed to evaluate your arguments if YOU don't even evaluate them? Good line-by-line, evidence comparison, and impact calc help a lot!

About speaker points...

1. be nice (not just to your opponents, but your partner too!)

2. be clear and/or organized

3. *be fast* (pro tip: speaking drills are your friend!)

4. **be funny** (call me crazy but I love puns!)

These things need to happen in order. I don't care if you can go 500 wpm, if I can't understand you, that means nothing to me. Likewise, you can make jokes, but if it's at the expense of someone in the round, then don't expect anything more than a 25 :/ Do these things well, and I'll be happy to award high 29's or even a 30! :)

Some things about myself. I have debated at Glenbrook South High School for 4 years. I look like I am a high school freshman, however, I can assure you that I am a Senior!

Top Level: In any debate round I judge I am mostly a Tech v. Truth judge. That being said, if the other team drops an important argument you must point it out AND explain why the dropped argument matters for my decision, not just that they dropped it. I prefer DAs and CPs over Kritikal arguments however, if you can clearly explain your alternative, and if the K makes sense to me you have a good chance at the ballot. I was pretty policy-oriented throughout my debate career, but that doesn't mean I will totally vote down the K.

Affirmatives: I prefer affs that defend the resolution and advocate for the USFG. You and your partner being the advocacy is not my favorite when it comes to affs. That being said Soft Left, and Hard stick right-leaning affs with big impacts are both ok. In the context of a planless aff, I am very familiar with a T debate, but you should be able to defend and explain your interpretation of the role of the ballot, as well as impact out the round as to why not engaging the USFG or the resolution is bad.

Disads: DA v. Case debates are fun when impacted out well and use of good LBL. When you just tell me your impact o/w because they do isn't a good enough reason for me to vote on them. For a Disad, you should be able to explain the link story as well as how your internal links reach your impacts.

Kritiks: I was pretty policy in my time debating at GBS. I know the basics so when it comes to Cap, Security, Militarism, I'll be fine. However, if you decide to read something fancy or tricky, a good explanation is always crucial not only for me as you judge but also for the other team. To be able to properly engage your opponent is crucial and that's what makes clash so important.

Topicality: If an aff is truly not topical, AND if you properly impact out T then you will win the round. That being said, you should be able to defend your interpretation as well as debate a c/i. Furthermore, if the aff drops T and the neg extends it and points it out with an impact, I will defer to Tech. v. Truth in the round.

Theory: If there is any abuse in round and you properly point it out with a clear explanation, I will vote on it. That being said, Tech v. Truth still applies here. Always explain your violation and why its a voter.

Technical Things: You should always be flowing, if you don't flow and or care about your round, how do you think I am going to react as I have to sit and evaluate what you present to me. Time your own speeches and prep, but I will still keep the main time. If you steal prep and I catch you I will dock speaks, so don't steal prep.

Remember, Debate is a technical game that has a winner and a loser. Please be respectful to both me and your opponents. This activity means a lot to me, so you should be respectful as to not put down or even have someone quit debate. This is without saying, but if you are disrespectful you'll see it in your speaks, and comments, no matter if you won or lost.

I am a coach at Washburn Highschool where I have been working since 2021.

I debater for a total of 6 years before I decided to stop debating. 4 were in high school at Glenbrook South and 2 at the University of Minnesota. I have qualified for the TOC once and the NDT twice

TLDR

I don't really have much to say in this paradigm I have previously had long paradigms that explained my view of each argument, but, I dont think that provided anything useful because the way you debate is a stylistic choice and I don't think judges should have a preference on what styles they vote for. It is my job as a judge to evaluate the flow and vote for which ever team I think wins the round. I will vote for any argument (excluding arguments that make the debate space harmful as I won't ignore my role is as an educator).

Ks--i really like these they are useful education that should be discussed in the debate space. I will vote on framework because I think the debate about framework is a useful conversation to have (how should our engagement with debate operate is a useful question and one that I really like).

Policy--this is the style i debated. i really like these I don't know if there is much more to say. I mean DAs, Ts, CPs, Turns, all are good.

Condo--I think that condo is fine but Ill vote for condo bad even against 1 condo if you win it.

My experience is one mainly as debating policy, however, my more recent experience coaching have left me more focused on critical arguments, mainly the cap k and set col while also adding in a role as an educator inside of the space. I don't think that it should be up to the judges to determine the stylistic decisions they vote on it should be the argumentation. That said I won't vote for arguments that make the debate space harmful.

Kritiks

I typically think of kritiks as coming in a couple forms. One that focuses a criticism on the framework of debate or one that focuses more on an alternative. These are both very strong and I understand the strategic choice of keeping routes open, but, by the end of the debate I think that having the time to spend constructing a specific route is more sucessful than trying to keep all options open. It is much more persuasive if all the arguments you chose to go for use a similar foundation. This is extremely useful because if you spent so much time winning framework it will make certain case arguments, certain links better.

If you are debating against a kritik what helped me was trying to identify the route the neg's k takes and having a plan for each of these avenues. I think it really depends on the aff, but there are a few strategies against Ks. By strategies I mean what is the focus of the 2ar win on, because you should still have everything covered as much as it needs to.

-Perm, no-link--it is important to have a net benefit to the perm which can be alt fails, cede the ptx, the advantage, ect.

-Framework, extinction outweighs, alt fails--it is important to think through the implication of you winning framework. There are some Ks where they will just lose while other Ks have strong alts and impacts.

CPs

I am a fan of CPs. I don’t really have any leaning way I believe. I think theory typically isn’t the best strategy not because I won’t vote on it but unless the CP is really cheating then it typically is just easier for the neg to defend theory.

This is where I spent a lot of my time in debate doing coming up with cps.

DAs

I love DAs. The bad ones the good ones whatever da you want. I feel like this isn’t controversial.

I am a very good judge for T if you are ready on the tech level. I will peetty easially pull the trigger on less viable T violations if you are just ahead. I really like the focus being put on the implications of how debate would work.

The following is the only information that you must know. The rest of this paradigm is just organized ramblings that may or may not be helpful.

Conditionality is good---I will vote neg if the 2AR is only condo. This is neither a prediction nor a challenge. It is a threat. Every other theory argument is fair game (including yes/no judge kick), but I will never punish the neg for advocacies that the 2NR does not extend.

Organization is more important than style or substance---if you are unclear, refuse to number, do not signpost, make arguments in long, intricately worded paragraphs, or fly through analytics at a million miles an hour, I will miss arguments. I will never use the speech doc to fill in holes because debate is communication activity. If I miss an argument, that is on you because debate is a speech activity, not a reading contest. I always try to make it obvious that I am not able to follow you through both verbal and non-verbal cues.

I have very few argumentative preferences---other than my hatred of theory, I hold very few predispositions when it comes to arguments informed by evidence of any kind, whether that be cards, personal experience, or something else. The only thing I must know by the end of the debate is why you should win. Put another way, I value execution more than substance. I do not read very many cards. I do not assign arbitrary importance to single lines not impacted out in final rebuttals.

How do you get the decision you want from me?

Tell me what to do in every place possible---robust judge instruction is the only way to avoid catastrophic judge intervention. Rather than force the judge to find the win for them, the best debaters tell the judge both why they win and the other team loses. This is aided by a clear, cohesive, and consistent narrative through the debate. Final rebuttals should clearly explain the implication of winning your most important arguments, particularly relative to the other team's arguments. Doing so will result in a faster, clearer decision and better speaker points. I only read cards when it is absolutely required because of a dispute over evidence quality, qualifications, etc. I do not read cards to fill in gaps on my flow.

Explain the implication of technically concessions---the bar I use for this is that I have to be able to explain to the other team what the implication was of them dropping a certain argument. Often teams will assert that things like "turns case" are dropped but won't say what this means or what the argument even is. If you truly believe something is conceded and important enough to jump up and down about, you are leaving me to my own devices to figure out the extent to which that argument matters. The most often reason that I sit on elim panels is because I, right or wrong, often have a different understanding of technically conceded arguments than the other judges. The way to avoid this is by arguing concessions as if the other team will win full risk of every other argument and explaining why I still vote for you (this means arguing conceded links as if the other team wins link defense to the other links, theory as if the CP is better than the plan, or rollback as if the aff wins solvency). Otherwise, relative risk could come back to bite you.

What can you do change about your debating to maximize your chances of winning?

Complain about new arguments more than usual---the bar is on the floor. I think new 1AR arguments have gotten out of hand. If the block informs me of its deliberate choice not to make certain arguments because of 2AC errors/concessions/to avoid new 1AR arguments, I am very likely to obey 2NR judge instruction to ignore whatever new 1AR nonsense occurs. For example, if the 2AC says "perm do both" but does not explain why it solves the net benefit, the negative does not have to answer it. Further, if the 1AR then explains why it shields, the 2NR can just say the explanation was new. For the aff side, I willing to entertain the idea that the 1NR does not get new impacts to the DA (or even give the 1AR add-ons in response). Just call these things out when you see them, and the debate will become much simpler.

Don't pander---as much as being pandered to boosts my ego, I would much rather see people do what they're comfortable with. Debating with personality and confidence is infinitely more likely to boost your chances of winning than your argument selection. Debate is a persuasive activity, and I would be lying if I said it was possible to sever presentation from technical debating. If you debate your best, everything in this paradigm, including my stylistic preferences, go away.

Make complete arguments, and refuse to answer incomplete ones---it is not the 12-off 1NC that makes me angry, it is the 2AC that treats each off-case equally. If the 1NC doesn't even try to read a link, the 2AC does not have to say no link because fully conceding every other component of the DA doesn't matter unless if the link is zero. If the 1NC reads a link to a different aff, you should only say "no link" in the 2AC. If the 1NC doesn't say the CP solves the case, the 2AC does not have to say it doesn't unless you are afraid that once explained, the 1AR will have to overcompensate. I consistently see 2ACs that will accurately assess that a 1NC position was incomplete and then spend an inordinate amount of time outcarding the 1NC. This will make me second-guess whether the 1NC applied because it tells me that you take the argument seriously. Stop doing that.

How should I approach debates involving planless affirmatives?

Shallow debating will favor the neg---I find that teams will often repeat lines of argumentation that they assume to be true without explaining them. For neg teams, this is oftentimes asserting that fairness is an impact without any of the explanation required to prove such a claim, and for aff teams, this usually looks like asserting some structural problem with debate and/or the topic without explaining why that problem exists/why the aff solves it. This is where my bias comes in: because I am more familiar with the neg side of things, when underdeveloped, I am more likely to intervene for the negative simply by virtue of the fact that I have only been aff in these debates like 4 times roughly 6 years ago, and I do not have as much of an intuitive grasp on how the aff arguments apply to the neg ones as I do of the inverse.

You don't need to adapt---I'm agnostic towards both the "best impact" to framework and the "best" way to answer it. I don't view framework debates as distinct from anything else and try my best to maintain the same conventions of judging that I do in every other debate.

Focus on internal links---what I mean by this is that teams seldom disagree with one another about whether debate has some value. The question that each team should try to answer in front of me is how we can maximize debate's value wherever it exists. A good portion of the final rebuttal needs to be dedicated to explaining why the model that you have forwarded does that better than the other team's can. This may just boil down to "do impact comparison," but I find that framework debates are more engaging to watch and easier to evaluate when teams explicitly focus on comparison as opposed to making large, structural claims and trying to get me to connect the dots for them.

What should you know in debates where the neg goes for the K against a policy aff?

Vagueness will favor the aff---I'm a terrible judge for teams that rely on dropped tricks in order to win, especially if those tricks are vague assertions of "serial policy failure" or "ontology" or "root cause" without tailored application to the aff. I'm a great judge for nuanced link debating, competing ethical frameworks, and alternatives oriented towards changing the world in some capacity rather than simply explaining it.

Very good for the link turn and perm---I would much prefer to judge link turn/perm debates than whatever you'd call buzzword-laden 2ARs about utilitarianism. I often find myself questioning why alternatives solve link arguments. If you read a 1AC full of pre-empts, I strongly prefer you go for those rather than gesturing at the world being complex and saying the case is true as an abstraction.

Here is a list of thoughts related to counterplans.

Judge kick is my default, I guess?---does this even matter in the year of our lord 2024, where no one goes for "links to the net benefit" and very few teams have full-throated defenses of permutations against anything but the slimiest of process junk? If no one tells me to kick the counterplan, I guess I'll kick it, but I'm a very easy sell on the argument that I shouldn't.

I need to understand CP solvency---I do not presume that a CP solves the case in the same way that I do not presume the 1AC reading a plan text automatically means it solves its advantages. The 2AC cannot drop CP solvency if CP solvency is not argued by the 1NC. The same is true for the 1AR if the 2NC does not explain the CP. The neg burden here is not unreasonable, but I have seen enough decisions hinging on this issue recently that I feel the need to say this explicitly.

Not great in complex competition debates---these tend to be the debates that go over my head the most. I find myself voting neg a lot just because of technical concessions and a lack of 2AR judge instruction inviting intervention based on my general neg bias. Moreover, I am not intimately familiar with the inner workings of functionally and textually non-severance partially-but-sometimes-fully intrinsic permutations, and I require extra hand-holding in the 2NR/2AR on that particular issue.

Impacts matter---solvency deficits need connections to them. "Delay" and "certainty" only matter if the aff has a short-term impact that requires certainty. If I can't explain what impact that is, the deficit doesn't matter.

Theory ideally justifies a perm, not a ballot---I can see myself voting on most theory arguments. I don't love these debates most of the time, but I get it, cutting cards about CPs is hard work. I prefer that theoretical objections to CPs are phrased as justifications for competition, as those debates seem much less arbitrary than the latest flavor of "X CP is bad because it solves the case." That being said, this really only applies to process CPs, so I understand the utility of a theory 2AR in every other situation.

Will I vote on T against a policy aff!

Absolutely---some of the best debates I've watched, judged, and have participated in involved T. Good T speeches earn very high speaker points. I don't really care what the T argument is as long as you explain it compellingly.

What is plan in a vacuum?---seriously, someone tell me. How do you interpret the plan in a vacuum? The 1AC read evidence that informs what the plan means. This is why the aff can go for solvency deficits against CPs and nuanced no link arguments against DAs. To me, it seems untenable to suggest that the evidence the 1AC used to define plan function should be ignored when deciding topicality. This is not to say that plan in a vacuum is completely unwinnable in front me. Rather, I am not a fan of writing vague plan texts that lack a clear mandate, reading a 1AC that defends potentially untopical action, and then going for plan in a vacuum as if the 1AC deliberately read an advantage/solvency cards about something the plan didn't do.

Predictability matters vastly more than anything else---I think that the more precise or predictable an interpretation is, the less it matters how good its limits are on the topic in a vacuum. If a "bad" definition is more precise or predictable, limits are solely a reason we should've written the resolution better. This also means that I believe that precision is possible. Certain people in debate have convinced themselves that one definition cannot be more "precise" than another. Tell that to a lexicographer, and they will laugh in your face. This is what T debates should be all about. While I agree that "random court definition" is not a desirable model, there is always a debate to be had over the applicability over those "random court definitions," and the case facts, context of the definition, and outcome of the opinion certainly are relevant when reading the resolution. In past debates with insufficient impact calculus in the 2NR/2AR, I have intervened in favor of the team that more convincingly articulates predictability as an internal link because of this view.

The aff should go for reasonability---this is the ultimate conclusion to my disdain for limits. Most neg impacts to T can be taken out easily enough that offense about substance crowd-out can outweigh them.

What if I have the misfortune of needing to go for the status quo?

This is where I am the most neg biased---I am better than average for believing the world is better now than it is post-plan. I'm generally bad for structural uniqueness arguments if there's adequate link debating by the neg, and I am such a sucker for case defense that even weak DAs end up doing enough for me to win.

Evidence quality matters---this is in the DAs section of the paradigm because it is where it matters most. Far too often, teams read lots of bad cards that gesture at vague economic concepts for a few rebuttals, tell me to read the cards, and then don't look alarmed when I conclude that the cards sucked. Debates over bad evidence result in more intervention, particularly when that evidence is under-explained by the 2NR/2AR. This means that if you're going for the status quo with a DA that doesn't have the best evidence, you cannot afford to let your cards do the debating for you.

Thumpers are boring and cowardly---mostly applies to politics on this topic. "There are other bills in Congress" is not a link nor a uniqueness answer to the politics DA. You have to explain why your thumper implicates the DA or is not priced in by the neg reading a uniqueness card.

Be smart---I am not a particularly smart person but know one when I see one. Smart arguments as an alternative to getting lost in the cards will not only increase your chances of winning, but it will also boost your speaker points. Knowing stuff about the world is really cool.

How can I get better speaker points?

Be yourself---the worst form of overadapting is when serious people try to be funny or funny people try to be serious. I love debaters with personality and reward them with speaker points much more than I do anything else. Show me you want to be there, and you'll be fine.

Any thoughts on impact turns?

Impact framing matters more than impact defense---I am more than willing to pull the trigger on impact framing even with unmitigated impacts from the other side. I am not averse to stomaching a nuclear war if animals come first or risking the heat death of the universe if future generations don't matter. I think people care too much about impact defense in this debates when it rarely matters. Invest more time in explaining how I should decide the debate than assuming I can follow the implication of every technical drop exactly how you envision I shoudl.

I have no thoughts on the substance of impact turns---everything is fair game. It is virtually impossible to get me to toss an impact turn without substantive refutation. If you can't explain why spark or wipeout or warming good is incorrect, you deserve to lose because the majority of impact turns are academically ridiculous and/or philosophically inconsistent.

Why is your paradigm so long?

I like reading long paradigms when I am bored. I put a lot of care into judging and like to learn about how people think, so I try to make my paradigm reflect both of these values. Plus, I judge enough debates to be guaranteed an audience, so I might as well take advantage of it.

I also think paradigms are mostly unhelpful (this extends to my own). The best way to learn how a judge thinks is to have them judge you and to ask questions after the debate. Most judges, myself included, don't really know how they judge debates until they're in them. The length of this paradigm reflects a series of observations that, if adhered to, would make it easier to predict how I would vote.

I struggle to get rid of parts of my paradigm. I update it whenever I'm bored because that is what spending a long time on debate will do to your brain. As a debater, I hate paradigms that don't provide helpful information about why a judge thinks the way that they do. I figure that having a long paradigm is the best way to avoid being unhelpful, because the more information I include, the clearer my thinking should be to the people I am judging. It also forces me to adhere to the procedures I explain, theoretically resulting in more consistent decisions over time.

For LD.

Strike me if you go for tricks and/or theory. Do not take me high if you don't read and defend a plan. I have read some philosophy and have a decent understanding of much of what is read in LD, but I do not intuitively understand how some of it applies to debate, so I may need more explanation than the normal LD judge would for some of the more complex stuff (think: the more premises in your logic equation, the more explanation I need to understand why your argument is sound).

***Specifics***

Case:

Always important. I do think most teams nowadays are doing less of it. A good 2nr/2ar should always give me a story of what is happening and how I should evaluate it. Overviews are good... just don't forget the line by line. Tell me how the advantage interacts with the disad or kritik and what that means.

Disadvantages:

Love these. I always want a good thorough story of the DA [assume I don't know anything about it]. Turns case should always be there, tell me how your DA interacts with the aff [Don't just be like "Extinction turns the aff", tell me how your impact or Link specifically affects the aff. Blocks are good, just don't rely on them too much. I prefer impact analysis on top instead of an overview. Compare your cards to theirs, "Our card is more recent, qualified, etc...". Every part of the DA is important. You do have to win every part of the DA [Same for Advantages] If they drop a DA [or anything] don't just say "they dropped it", give me a reason why I should care, what does it mean that they dropped it, you get the picture. Link turns case is a really good argument.

Counterplans:

CP and DA is always a good move. Adv cp + impact turn = my fave. You do have to win the net benefit. Won’t vote on a Counterplan without it. 100 planks? Of course. Agent Counterplans are amazing, just make sure to establish competition. Love Pics, the aff does have to win the entire Plan is a good idea. Always remember to answer theory on the CP. Explain how you access the aff's internal links and do the work. Competition determines legitimacy for CPs - if a CP is a legitimate opportunity cost to the aff, aff theory arguments are a bit less persuasive to me.

Topicality:

If you do go for it make sure it's a full 5 minutes. None of this T, CP, and Disad nonsense. Impact out both your standards and theirs. Give me reasons to prefer reasonability and competing interps. Probably need examples of in-round abuse. ASPEC is pure banter. Just don't drop it 2as.

Theory:

This is always an important part of the debate. 3 condo is probably the max. Prove to me why rejecting the team is necessary. If you have to think "is this counterplan shady/cheating". It probably is.

Kritiks:

I find them interesting, explain your theory of power, philosophy, etc. Explain the alt very clear, and how it resolves the impact to the K. I am most familiar in the following, Cap/Neolib, Security, Settler Colonialism, Ableism. Links specific to the aff are amazing. [It has to be why the aff links and not the squo]. Long overviews? Sure why not but don’t just read it and be like “Line by line, done above, done above, done above”. Framework is important, don't undercover this in rebuttals. The vague alt argument isn't very convincing unless made iffy in CX. The alt needs to solve case, establish root cause claims. Not my Baudrillard < Yes, its your Baudrillard.

K Affs:

Roadmaps [This is copied from Argent Martinez’s paradigm who copied it from John Tao's paradigm—I agree with them both]

Please. There are four things I've been seeing that drive me absolutely insane - and apparently there's enough for me to even write about it.

1) Roadmapping the 1AC. Don't do it. It's not necessary. It's not a thing.

2) Asking if I want a roadmap. The answer is YES. The answer is always YES (with the exception of the 1AC, because, once again, don't do it).

3) 1NC roadmap - just tell me how many off, and then where you plan on going on. Don't tell me what the Off cases are, that's not necessary.

4) Roadmap by being clear and concise: "DA, K, Case in order of solvency then advantage one." Do not roadmap: "I'm going to go a little bit on solvency, and then maybe the K...and if I have time maybe the DA...."

I debated for four years at Payton and am not debating in college. If you are a team that reads k affs, you should not pref me. My only 2NR strategy was framework, and I really don't buy the common arguments about debate space being bad or debaters having the ability to change it through individual rounds.

A compete argument consists of a claim and warrants. Simply saying that an argument was dropped means nothing if it's not contextualized to how that implicates the round.

Case

Case debate is underutilized by many of the teams that I judge. Neg teams should use smart case turns or recut the 1ac evidence instead of just using impact defense.

Bad framing debates are the worst. If you don't use warrants and just parrot taglines at each other, I will just default to util.

Disadvantages

2NRs that are the DA v case are fantastic. I judge disadvantages v case primarily through the quality of warranted rebuttal analysis, quality of evidence, and impact calc. I think 0 risk is possible, but it would require a lot of evidence analysis by the aff.

Explain why uniqueness matters with politics DAs.

Counterplans

Process counterplans need to have a clear solvency advocate and articulated reasons why its better then the plan because I'm not a fan of sneaky CPs.

Kritiks

I am qualified to judge a Security/Biopolitics/Cap K round. Identity and high theory Ks will be very unpersuasive to me. Links must be specific to the 1ac -- reciting generic blocks will not be voted on. I have a high threshold for voting neg on the K-- the neg should win specific links and framework. It's not necessary to win an alternative.

Topicality

I default to competing interpretations. I don't have a lot of preferences other than both teams need to describe what the topic looks like underneath both interpretations. 2NRs and 2ARs should clearly explain what their view of the topic looks like and what their opponents view looks like.

I'll vote on extra-T or effects-T only if there is a clear violation.

Theory

Theory should be 5 minutes of the 2AR if you're going for it.

i will always vote for the team that does the better debating, you do not need to tell me to vote for the team that does the better debating. both teams can argue about what "the better debating" means but i will always vote for the team that does the better debating

i will try to evaluate the debate in the way that the debaters have prioritized arguments - i will look for the easiest way out of deciding a debate and go from there - this makes impact framing and judge instruction very important for me

depth > breath - this is the most important thing on my paradigm. i think that any given team needs a maximum of 3 pieces of offense to win any given round and should explain why they're winning that/those argument(s) and why it means they win the round extensively. more than 6 offcase will make me grumpy, although i will still listen to all of them

tech > truth - having truth on your side is obviously good and will win the round when the flow is close but debate is about your ability to debate, not about your ability to read objectively true arguments

evidence quality > quantity - most arguments don't need cards - if you are reading evidence, make sure it is specific and warranted - if you cannot explain the warrants in your cards, i will give them far less weight - author qualifications mean a lot less to me than warrants

i have a debate level understanding of whatever kind of literature you're planning on reading unless you're being truly innovative

STOP MISUSING ONTOLOGY CLAIMS - ontology is important, but almost zero actual qualified authors will say that ontology means that nothing good can ever happen - aff teams vs the k need to make this point more.

i will assume util is trutil until told otherwise

i really really really really really strongly dislike arguments that require me to make a judgment call on whether or not one team or debater is a good person/good people - if something is so egregious that a team should be disqualified from a round or tournament either i will directly intervene before the round ends or you should take it up with the tournament and the other team's coaches

the case debate

i know it is cliché - but this is very important! - do not assume i know what your aff is/does, this makes the 2ac/2ar overview crucial

i am probably a better judge for presumption than most - most aff teams need to make massive stretches in order to solve the impacts they specify in the 1AC - this is why i generally prefer affs with specific and solvable impacts

i'm super down for impact turns - everything from co2 ag to china war good to wipeout is cool with me as long as it's explained well

disadvantages

disads don't always need uniqueness - if the impact is framed as a sliding scale, the link can definitely overcome uniqueness problems

impact framing matters a lot - most teams in a DA debate will agree to magnitude x probability - if both teams agree to this framing timeframe is the tiebreaker

i love internal link defense - a lot of teams surprisingly don't do this that much - most DA internal link scenarios are ridiculous and some well warranted defenses to them are quite persuasive to me

politics da's - i will usually default to thinking that durable fiat doesn't solve them because you only fiat enough congress members to pass the plan - i am however persuaded by non-normative interpretations of fiat that allow aff teams to avoid politics da's (like should =/= immediate) - i am fine for political capital links as long as you have specific evidence

counterplans

functional > textual competition - i think there are ways to explain textual competition as functional competition (especially with courts counterplans with specific evidence), however i generally find textual competition unpersuasive

sufficiency framing unless the aff team makes arguments that contradict this - i will generally assume that if a risk of the net benefit outweighs the risk of the solvency deficit, i will vote negative on the cp

theory (except for condo) is probably a reason to reject the argument, not the team

topicality/procedurals

precision is generally the gold standard unless community consensus heavily contradicts it and makes debate near impossible

i like it when t blocks are specific to the topic - case lists of what you allow/what they justify and listing off ground lost is good

effects and extra t arguments are under utilized and pretty important - especially because they're the only real way of snuffing out questionably topical affs that destroy debatability and limits

non resolutional procedurals are cringe but obviously if this is your thing still go for it, especially if it's dropped

kritiks

specific links to the mechanism of the aff are always best but if you only have generic cards, application and explanation specific to the aff will be enough to win a pretty big risk of the link

the alt really needs to solve the links - otherwise i will view the k as a mostly non-unique linear da - this is still winnable but makes it unnecessarily harder for the neg

framework is obviously important - i see the framework debate on a k from the neg more similarly to a framework debate against a k aff more than most, it's a debate about models of debate - this is why i'm generally less receptive to "you link, you lose" framework arguments, especially when the neg is making a sweeping ontology claim, it really leaves no role for the aff

2nr framing and link storytelling is crucial

the alt can result in or solve the aff without losing to the perm - but it requires a more nuanced link and alt explanation - usually about sequencing/framing or solving the internal links of the aff, but not resulting in its mechanism

kritik affirmatives

these are by far the worst and best debates

i am a fine judge for framework/t-usfg - however i will say that i would prefer you do literally anything else besides going for a procedural fairness impact - obviously, if you win it, i'll vote for you, but i will be incredibly grumpy about it - clash and education are far better impacts and allow you to have turns case warrants

if you do choose to go for framework/t-usfg - you really need to be going to the case page in the 2nr - otherwise you're just kind of gifting the aff full solvency and their impact turns which makes it infinitely easier for the aff

for aff teams - i think there are really only 2 strategic ways to debate framework - either impact turn everything and ignore the topic or just be a hard left topical aff - i am increasingly confused by k teams that do this "we're half topical" nonsense because it makes it much harder for you to solve your impact turns while still linking you to all of their framework offense

"the state is an assemblage" is not a real argument

1ac cross-x is crucial - i think every 2n should be asking "what is the role of the negative?" and "what is the relationship between the aff and solving 1ac impacts?" and every 1a should have a well prepared answer to these

i think that a lot of kritical affs have inherency issues and that these very often justify a presumption ballot

pics are often very strategic against critical affirmatives - especially ones that affirm something incredibly sweeping and broad

i love kvk debates - links need specificity though - links along the lines of "you didn't mention/analyze *x*" are incredibly unpersuasive to me - i love the cap k but if your link is "you didn't use the state" i will be quite annoyed

"no perms in a method/tactics debate" is a pretty sound argument to me, especially because it's one of the only ways to garner competition against k affs - competition should be established in cx tho

- I haven't had much experience with the arms sales topic, so I would appreciate a bit more explanation with your arguments. Don't always assume I know what you're talking about.

- I really, really prefer policy debates over kritikal ones.

- Disclose before round!

Disadvantages

- DA vs case is my favorite type of debate to judge.

- I love "turns the case" and wish that more teams would explicitly use it in their impact calculus.

- I like politics, but the link chain needs to be coherent (e.g. why does ____ backlash over the plan mean that ___ won't pass?).

Topicality

- Not the biggest fan in all honesty, but if the plan is almost certainly abusive and/or you're fairly ahead on that flow coming into the 2NR, I'll live.

- I really appreciate evidence comparison of definitions -- it's really underutilized for some reason.

Counterplans

- I like them, I much rather prefer counterplans that are specific to the plan's mechanism than ones than that probably absorb the plan. I'm okay with the latter, but if you have something closer to the former I would go with the former.

- I think advantage counterplans are underused and I love judging them since they force really good debates over the aff's internal links.

- Please don't just say "perm ______" and move on to the next argument. You should briefly why the perm solves and why it doesn't link to the net benefit. Don't be lazy, now.

Kritiks

- All in all, this probably shouldn't be your A-strat if you have me. I'll get live if you do arguments like neolib, but you're going to lose me if you do high theory.

- The link needs to be as specific to the plan's action or mechanism as possible. Avoid reading generic topic links at all costs, especially in the 1NC.

- I think that the alternative needs to have a concrete and definitive plan for solving the kritik's impact.

- I tend to lean towards the the interpretation of framework in which the affirmative gets to weigh their impacts against the negative's.

K-Affs

- Friends, it's called policy debate. Let's debate policies.

- For real though, I lean negative when it comes to any framework or topicality debate. I

Theory

- Slow down while reading theory.

- Conditionality is generally good. For a frame of reference, my belief is that the neg is allowed about 1-2 conditional advocates. Any more than that, and I start paying a lot more attention to the aff's arguments.

- I don't like it when the 2AC has a bunch of blippy theory arguments that aren't actually substance as much as they are a half-assed attempt to overstretch the block. If you want to outspread the negative, smart analytics are always appreciated.

Like most judges (ideally), I will vote for any argument as long as it is debated effectively. Please be nice to each other or you will get bad speaks. Cross ex is super important, don't blow it off. I don't care what you run just do it well. Understand whatever you're saying, and if you don't understand it then use smaller words. Make the debate interesting please. Do not be racist, sexist, homophobic, bad, etc. Tech over truth mostly just because it's really funny when teams get away with tech stuff, just don't let it get to your head because the skills you gain from debate should not be sneakiness and talking really fast.

That's pretty much it, just have fun in the round, debate can get stressful just remember it's never that deep! Even if you're getting ripped apart it's gonna be alright, life exists outside debate. But also bonus speaks if the other team cries in cross ex.

Don't run ASPEC. I'll vote on it I guess but don't run it. I'll cry.

Detailed stuff:

T - 2NR should be impacting out why the aff being untopical is bad. If it's just "they're not topical so they should lose!" I'm probably not gonna vote on it. Like all theory, you should be explaining why it's a voter.

DAs - Give me the story. If I can't explain in my RFD how exactly the aff triggers the impact, I don't know why I'd vote on it. But beyond that this is pretty meat & potatoes just don't fumble individual parts of it, & explain why the DA outweighs case/vice versa if you're aff.

Ks - I don't consider myself a huge K debater, but I've read a fair share and I have a decent grasp on a good amount of K lit. That being said, a couple things: 1. Don't run a K that you don't understand the lit of. Everyone can tell and you'll probably lose. 2. Assume that everyone else in the round has never heard the K before. What I mean by this is that your explanations are crucial. Me and your opponents should all be able to understand the link, the alt, and the thesis of the K. Even if they drop like the entire K I'd still like a decent explanation of what all your big-worded, full-paragraph-tagged cards mean lol.

CPs - I like me a good CP. Aff, if they read an abusive CP, put theory on it. I like me some good CP theory. I feel like CPs are a really under-appreciated part of debate. I recommend external net bens rather than just like a solvency net ben or something, but if you can prove the CP solves all of case I guess it doesn't really matter. Get creative with your CPs please, and aff get creative with your perms. Gimme more than just "Perm do both, next" explain what the perm would look like.

Presumption - I love giving a "Neg on presumption" RFD. Nothing is more satisfying than shredding an aff to bits. That being said, you should probably have a DA or something with it so I have to err your way still, but yeah go get 'em. Aff on presumption is a thing too but idk it don't hit the same yknow?

If you have any specific questions just ask me before the round. I like to think I'm pretty chill but I do take debate seriously. I do my best to give a good amount of feedback too, if it feels like I'm ripping on you don't take it personally, I try and give varsity-level feedback so y'all can elevate your debating the most you can.

I debated at OPRF for four years running mostly policy arguments. I no longer debate, having decided to try out a novel concept called "free time". Weird, I know. That being said, debate did a lot for me as a person and I'm incredibly glad that I did it, and I think that judging is a great way to stay involved with an awesome community and make sure that new generations also get to have that life changing experience!

Do whatever's the most fun for you. Don't be a dick. Don't be a bigot. Don't clip cards. Tech over truth.

Make smart arguments. Read good cards. Compare evidence. Do line-by-line. Speed is all good.

If an argument isn't on my flow it wasn't made. That means probably send analytics and definitely slow down when you read them. If you're extrapolating a new argument from an old argument, make that clear in the round, I won't do the work for you.

If I think a piece of evidence is relevant to the debate, I will probably read it. If you tell me that a piece of evidence is relevant and that I should read it, I will definitely read it. That being said, the only parts of your card that are relevant are the parts you read. Yes, this means you have to read rehighlightings. I will treat insertions as analytics.

I know nothing about the topic. I did not go to camp or judge for a camp. I might google the resolution at some point but don't count on it.

-I'm sympathetic to a lot of T/FW arguments but I'll vote for whoever wins the flow. My job is to evaluate the arguments that are made and I try to do just that, but I think it's important to acknowledge my opinions because they exist whether I like it or not.

-I think DAs vs K affs are dope. Once again, my ballot is still dependent upon you winning said DA.

-I will flow your long overviews, but I won't like it. Put it on the line-by-line.

-I think T debates can be a lot of fun to have (even if they're almost never fun to judge). The way it was always explained to me is to debate T like a disad, where the violation is your link, the definition is your uniqueness, and the impacts are your standards.

-Yes I made a joke about not knowing what the resolution is, but if it comes down to a T debate I promise to make sure that I'm informed on the relevant background information that you would assume a competent judge to have in such a scenario. Translated, this means I'll pull up the resolution of google.

-Do lots of impact work. Make it very clear to me why your vision of the topic is better for debate than you opponents. Make me see that world. Too often teams get stuck in the specifics and fail to describe the bigger picture. Trust me, I lost more than one round because of it.

DA:

-Love me a good politics DA. That being said, politics DAs are stupid as hell. You need to tell me why yours isn't. Run your ridiculous politics scenarios, but only if you can make them make sense to me (and have the evidence to back it up).

-Do impact calc. It's important.

- On the aff, use your case against the DA. You have 8 minutes of 1AC cards on why your case is a good idea, extend them. If you read a framing contention, this does not mean you can drop their DAs impacts. Apply the cards you read on framing specifically to their scenario with more specific impact d. Is that more trouble than its worth? Probably, but you're the one who decided to read a soft left aff.

-Rider disads are probably illegitimate but I can be convinced otherwise.

CP:

-Solvency advocates are important, the more specific the better. This means that planks are awesome only so long as you have solvency advocates to defend them.

-Should I judge kick? Let me know! Debate!

-Be consistent with your perm explanations

-See T for what I think about theory

-See DAs for "use your 1AC cards"

-No neg fiat and other such inane theory arguments are pretty much only ever something I will vote on if they're dropped

-I used to be a big hater of the process counterplan but I've come to appreciate them, so long as they have (you guessed it) a solvency advocate. To be specific, that means a solvency advocate that is at least either in the context of the topic or the aff (looking at you concon).

-I'll probably end up evaluating both the aff and the K unless the framework flow is overwhelmingly in one direction

-See K affs for some thoughts, particularly regarding lit bases and long overviews

-A specific link to the plan will help you immensely here, the more specific the better.

Top level:

I've judged a single tournament in the past three years, but I've been debating all of college. I research and cut cards constantly, so I'm well equipped to grasp any debate minutia. I have a pretty good understanding of economics, but I have no clue what social security does or the differences between tax schemes. Please err against assuming I know how these mechanisms work.

I want to note that for everything outside the "Non-negotiables" section is up for debate. Given debaters can never resolve every issue in the debate, the following describes how I evaluate rounds when left to my own devices. Any predispositions are easily overcome by judge instruction.

Feel free to ask me any Qs about debating in college/at Georgetown!

Non-Negotiables:

Speech times, speech orders, everyone only speaking for one constructive/rebuttal.

I will not vote on any accusations about what happened outside of the round (that includes disclosure theory).

An argument has a claim and warrant. "Climate change is existential" is not an argument, it is an assertion. "Climate change is existential - higher temperatures destroy food security, cause mass displacement, or conflict" is. Basically, for something to be dropped, I should be able to explain why something is true to the other team in the RFD. Please don't make me intervene to say you didn't make complete arguments.

Any debating that makes your opponents unsafe is an auto L.

Asking for 30s caps speaks at 25.

Ethics violations stop the round. I err against voting on these, so if you're going to say this make sure the violation is really bad and actually modified the nature of the debate. I cannot emphasize enough how much I don't want to vote on this.

Re-highlighted evidence MUST be read. However if both teams decide to just insert things, I will grumpily evaluate it.

Card docs cannot include analytics, unless they are perm/cp texts.

I've noticed a bad trend where judges let debaters get away with murder on clarity because they send analytics. I am not going to have my laptop open during speeches, so make sure you are debating like a human and not a spreading robot.

Evaluating Debates

Assuming no one has made any arguments about how I should evaluate my debates, my default is that I am evaluating whether the actor of the resolution should do the action of the resolution based on the consequences of that action. Affs can absolutely be justified through different ethical frames (deontology, rule utilitarianism, etc), but I default to consequentialism.

Under this frame, I evaluate just magnitude*probability of the positions in the round. My default is that future lives do probably matter, so I think extinction is a very large impact. Timeframe acts a tie breaker if magnitudes/probabilities are similar. The onus is on soft-left affs to propose a different way of evaluating impacts, and I am receptive to those, I just don't default to it.

Case

Please explain acronyms. Fine for whatever. Would prefer if you erred against impacts like "X thing solves numerous existential laundry lists" as I think the other team can just flag there's no warrant any of the things listed are problems.

Soft left affs are fine. Center debating on logical flaws with negative off-case positions and please answer the whole "extinction is infinite" argument. Getting rid of that makes it pretty easy to win the soft left aff outweighs some bad politics DA.

Plans should mean things.

I'm pretty good for the aff against extra-T if you specified a mechanism/process which the plan happened. Obviously the neg can PIC out of that, but I think it's legit for the aff to do.

More on the limits side, as a 2A I think even on the smallest topics there is always new things to be said. Pretty good for the aff on limits debates if they emphasize the danger of PICs.

I know little about any given topic, so examples of what the debates under your model look like, what ground and core generics exist for the neg and how that has built in link uniqueness is huge.

Perfectly debated, reasonability is pretty good, but can easily be persuaded by competing interpretations. Don't explain reasonability as "never vote on T" that's not what it is.

Some judges have a disdain for T as opposed to other types of policy arguments, I do not.

Not a fan of plan text in a vacuum, you should know what your plan does.

Counterplans

Pretty aff leaning on questions of competition. Textual competition is nonsense, text only gets meaning by the function of the counterplan. Theory can be a reason to reject the argument but is almost never a reason to reject a team (except for Condo and even there I think there is a good neg argument for just "stick us with all the CPs").

Counterplans must actually do policies not ideas. Text: "The United States should fund AI innovation" is meaningless and aff teams should point that out (neg teams should do so as well when plan texts are that vague).

Better than most for states/international fiat bad.

Very neg leaning on infinite condo. Neg ground/logic are good in front of me. Idea testing is not. A certain number of condo C/Is don't make much sense, except for maybe one condo. However, 2NC counterplans probably justify 1AR add ons.

If I remember I will judge kick. But please remind me because I might forget.

Critiques

While I am both not well versed in critical literature, and find Ks to be unfair for the affirmative to respond to, I've been voting for critiques pretty frequently. This often stems from the aff dropping neg offense on framework that obviates the plan. Aff teams need to make sure they're actually flowing and not just reading pre-scripted 1AR framework blocks.

Framework can't be a "wash" I will decide for one teams interpretation over the other.

If you're going to ignore the aff, you better spend a lot of time on framework as if you lose that I don't see a good chance you win any other part of the flow.

Perms vs Ks can't be intrinsic or severance. The alt is not a CP. If you want the K to be treated like a CP, you will probably lose to the perm.

Fairness is the best aff impact on framework IMO. I find a lot of Ks of util deployed to be tautological.

Debate does not make people good or bad. Arguments read do not make people good or bad. I am super unpersuaded that if everyone read the cap K every round on the neg we'd all be a bunch of marxists.

K Affs

I'm terrible for K affs, but I do respect the flow.

I find almost every argument K affs make on framework counterintuitive, so if you have me in the back make sure you are explaining your concepts well.

Fairness is the best impact, but I'll vote on any impact. After 8 years of debate, I've found everyone has their own ways of explaining why fairness matters. For me its complaining about the things I do to win, for others its comparing debate to other types of sports, and for others its using big academic words to describe fairness. The point is: I am very very inclined to think fairness is an intrinsic good, but I often see teams lose to K affs because they just never explain an impact to it.

If you're aff in these debates, I'm best if you actually counter-define words and defend that read of the topic. Often times that means you have to actually answer DAs, so most teams don't do that. I don't care that you conceded the link to the heg DA if you didn't defend the resolution. Impact calc is your best way out in front of me.

I have never judged a KvK debate. I don't know why the aff gets perms.

DAs

More open to well debated intrinsicness than most judges. Politics/Riders are fine, the aff should have to defend their process.

Please if you are defending politics DAs tell me a story. Who does Biden have to convince with his PC? Why are they persuadable? Why does the plan make that impossible?

Every time I judge the econ DA, I've seen teams basically talk past each other. Both have args why the aff would be good/bad for the economy but they never interact with their opponents. To win these debates in front of me, its really important to have evidence or at least a story, on why your link/link turn is more true. Maybe its because wage-price spirals can theoretically go on forever, where an increase in aggregate supply from a jobs guarantee is finite. I don't know, so you have to tell me.

Top 1-10 speaker at the tournament: 29.4-30

Top 11-20 speaker: 29.4-29.1

Clearing but no speaker award: 29.1-28.7

Not clearing, but positive or even record: 28.7-28.5

Below positive record: 28.5-27.5

Other

I care about evidence often more than other judges. If I feel like many issues have become unresolved, I often times use team's evidence as a way to help guide my decision. This may make my RFDs somewhat less based on the debating done, but I only resort to this if the 2NR/2AR did not give me enough to render a competent decision for them.

Good for impact turns. I think those are some of the most fun debates I've been a part of. That includes Spark/Wipeout. Not good for these turns if they turn interpersonal, which they really shouldn't do.

Pretty bad for 1NC CPs without solvency advocates. "CP: The 50 states should do the plan," is not a complete argument. The 1AR basically gets all new answers if you extend it. If you explain, even analytically, why the CP competes/solves the 1AR gets much less leeway for new args.

99% of the time 2NRs/2ARs should chose one line of offense. This isn't a preference. I don't care if there are 7 DAs in the 2NR, your speech will probably just be worse than if you chose one.

Cards written by debaters either about debate or while they were debaters are no better than you making the argument yourself.

I really don't mind being asked questions about my decisions, especially at the TOC. Everyone has worked hard to get here and deserve a thoroughly defended decision. Feel free to follow up after as well.

I am so bad for cheap shots like sneaking ASPEC or new affs bad somewhere in the doc. If its well warranted when said yeah I'll grumpily vote on it, but if its a blip I have such a low bar for aff cross applications and answers.

-- I HATE it when teams don't flash analytics. Debate isn't about outspreading the opponent and hoping that they drop something. You should be able to out-debate them even when they have all your arguments and it also helps me out to flow when you're going 100000000 mph during your speech.

-- Tag team is fine as long as you don’t start taking over cross-ex.

-- If you're referring to me, please call me Kevin.

-- I do not count flashing time (or general tech screw-ups) as prep time and quite frankly I am not a fascist about this kind of thing as some other judges, just don’t abuse my leniency on this.

-- If you are running more than 5 off-case positions, you need to rethink your strategy. Run it at your discretion, but know that I will be more likely to evaluate in-round abuse (on theory debates) as legitimate and a reason as you why your model of debate is bad.

-- You should speak more slowly. You will debate better. I will understand your argument better. Judges who understand your argument with more clarity than your opponent's argument are likely to side with you. If you are going too fast or are unclear, I will let you know. Ignore such warnings at your peril, as with Kritiks, I am singularly unafraid to admit I didn’t get an answer and therefore will not vote on it. I'm average at flowing but may miss tricks/theory if you don't make them especially clear. If I can't understand your argument -- either due to your lack of clarity or your argument's lack of coherence, I will not vote for it. The latter is often the downfall of most negative Kritiks. I'm a 4/10 for speed and maybe even a 5 if I'm fully awake.

-- I will read evidence if it is challenged by a team. Otherwise, if you say a piece of evidence says X and the other team doesn’t say anything, I probably won’t call for it and assume it says X. However, in the unfortunate (but fairly frequent) occurrence where both teams just read cards, I will call for cards and use my arbitrary and capricious analytical skills to piece together what I, in my semi-conscious (and probably apathetic) state, perceive is going on. -- I generally will vote on anything that is set forth on the round.

-- I will not hesitate to vote against teams and award zero points for socially unacceptable behavior i.e. evidence fabrication, threats of violence, racist or sexist slurs, etc.

-- You can't clip cards. This is non-negotiable. If I catch it, I'll happily ring you up and spend the next hour of my life doing anything else. If you're accusing a team of it, you need to be able to present me with a quality recording to review. The burden of proof lies with the accusing team, "beyond a reasonable doubt" is my standard for conviction.

TOPICALITY: Enjoy. I believe it is the NEG's burden to establish the plan is not topical. Case lists and arguments on what various interpretations would allow/not allow are very important. I have found that the limits/predictability/ground debate has been more persuasive to me, although I will consider other standards debates.

DISADVANTAGES AND ADVANTAGES: Mostly fine with most DAs, but not a big fan of politics DAs.

COUNTERPLANS: Okay. Case-specific CP's are preferable that integrate well (i.e. do not flatly contradict) with other NEG positions. The AFF has the burden of telling me how a permutation proves the CP is non-competitive.

KRITIKS: Not a fan, but I have voted on them numerous times. I will never be better than below mediocre (3/10) at evaluating these arguments because I don’t read philosophy for entertainment. To win, the negative must establish a clear story about 1) what the K is; 2) how it links; 3) what the impact is at either the policy level, or: 4) pre-fiat (to the extent it exists) outweighs policy arguments or other AFF impacts. Don’t just assume I will vote to reject their evil discourse, advocacy, lack of ontology, support of biopolitics, etc. Without an explanation, I will assume a K is a very bad non-unique DA. As such it will probably receive very little weight if challenged by the AFF. You must be able to distill long boring philosophical cards read at hyper speed to an explanation that I can comprehend. I have no fear of saying I don’t understand what the hell you are saying and I will not vote for issues I don’t understand. I don’t have to impress anyone with my intelligence or lack of. If you make me read said cards with no explanation, I will guarantee that I will not understand the five-syllable (often foreign) philosophical words in the card and you will go down in flames. I do appreciate, if not require specific analysis on the link and impact to either the AFF. If you can make specific applications (in contrast to vote negative b/c the state is bad), I will be much more likely to vote for you.

PERFORMANCE-BASED ARGUMENTS AND KRITIK AFFIRMATIVES: No topical plan that starts with "The United States federal government should..." No win. This is non-negotiable. If your AFF does not contain a topical plan and the negative raises even a minimal framework objection, I will vote negative. Especially on a topic where the AFF can critique some vestige of US [INSERT TOPIC HERE] policy and then read a plan to increase/ban that thing, it is a LOW requirement that the affirmative finds a topical way to make its desired argument.

General Things:

Before anything else, run what you like. I would like to see good debating. If you’re reading some K your varsity gave you that you have no idea what you’re doing with because you think it fits my paradigm, stop.

This is a very long and specific paradigm. That is for the sake of debaters who want to supplement/tailor arguments to the round. These are NOT standards by which I toss or pick winning arguments, they’re insubstantial biases that come into play when I thought both sides debated too equally to otherwise decide.

If you are offensive in any way to any person w/i or outside the debate, I will dock your speaker points massively.

Please do not attempt to get an advantage in any questionable ways, including: being a suck-up to the judge, deliberately making speech docs confusing, etc. It’s not cute

Also, new thought: if you are a male-female partnership and you decide to constantly speak over your female partner even when she's doing okay explaining things I will tell you to screw off in the middle of round, give you a 25, and will not be inclined to vote in your favor in the case of close debating. General Argumentation:

I won't cross-apply/judge-kick, etc for you unless you tell me to. If you make an argument on the DA that’s an obvious reason why the perm can’t happen, you’re still going to have to go to the perm and say “cross apply — from the DA.”
If your cards don’t say what you say they say, I generally disregard your argument.
My facial expressions are fairly readable. If I look like I’m confused, I probably am. More explanation please.
Open CX is fine. But please try to keep it to a minimum.
If you happen to be crazy fast for a novice, slow down on the analytics/space them out.
If any novice actually says in the 2NR that they’ll tell me what my ballot will look like and proceeds to ACTUALLY CLEARLY TELL ME WHY THEY WON MY BALLOT, automatic 30 points.

I’m not a huge fan of T but will absolutely vote on it.
My usual problem with T lies within really cheaty and unreasonable interpretations; if you read the interpretation that arms sales is only Ukraine, I’m going to be really skeptical and you’re going to have to do some pretty good “prefer it” work to get me to vote on it.
Please give me a stasis point. Otherwise I probably default that you’re shifting the goalposts. If you give me a caselist I will give you speaker points.
Given equal debating, I tend aff on T.

Theory:

I’m pretty good for framework against a planless aff (because apparently novices are reading those?); the aff should not just win that their k is NOT abusive, but also that there’s some offensive reason why it is good. Aff’s likelihood to win T also increases if they are tied to the topic of the year instead of just some generic Baudrillard crap.
I tend to buy that debate is a game. But I believe that argument can be counteracted by well-explained and reasonable in-round impacts, i.e. the ballot is a tool to get us to more debates to spread our education.
No one has good blocks for ASPEC, OSPEC, ZSPEC, etc. If I ever see a good debate on random-letter-SPEC, I… don’t know what to say. I don’t think I’m qualified to judge that kind of debater.
I think condo is a little unnecessary if the Neg is reading like three off but will vote on it.
Given equal debating, I tend neutral on theory.

If it’s top ten hits of policy oriented teams trying to garner kritikal offense (Security! Setcol!) I probably know what it is. If not, please explain it.
Explain your alt to me and why it solves!! If I don’t know what we’re doing to solve capitalism, I’m much less likely to vote neg. I also tend to go aff on the likelihood that just pedagogy doesn’t work. With me, you’re probably better off reading a “grassroots movements” alt than “we create a pedagogy against capitalism.” Pedagogy is fine too if well-argued.
LINK WORK. If you do not prove to me that the aff will lead to some perpetuation of what you critique, I tend to think the perm probably solves. If not properly addressed by the aff, I will vote on omission/our-epistemology-is-an-independent-voter links but I think a good K should always have a better link than “you didn’t talk about capitalism lol.”
Aff-wise I, again, love good perm debates! I think if the aff team addresses the links well and also extends their perm then they're already pretty set to win.
If you lose framework, I don’t think it’s the end of the world. Yes I will weigh the aff, but I will also weigh the K. UNLESS the aff wins role of the judge, ballot, etc— I default to who tells me clearly how to place my ballot.
Given equal debating, I tend neutral on the K.

DA:

Almost as good as counterplan debates.
Obviously the more specific the link is, the better— having a good specific link is a great way to also get ahead on uniqueness from the very beginning of the debate (i.e., no thumpers)
I like “turns the aff” debates where the aff turns the DA back— these are particularly interesting and convincing to me if either team does some real work!!
Given equal debating, I tend neg on DAs.

CP:

I LOVE a good CP. However, super generic, copy-and-paste the plan text CPs bore me. I’ll vote on them, but I much prefer a counterplan that references a specific alternate process through which the aff can be enacted without much solvency deficit/even better.
I think if the aff wins on the net benefit they usually automatically win, but I also think if the neg wins on the net benefit they can generally outweigh a little solvency deficit.
I tend aff on PIC or other “cheaty” CP theory unless the actor you’re consulting/process you’re adding is well contextualized and specific to the aff.
Aff-wise, I’m most impressed by specific, well-explained, and card-supported perms.
Given equal debating, I tend neg on CPs.

Case:

The aff should know their case inside and out and properly contextualize it in every debate. Case on top ALWAYS. I want to hear about why I should vote for the one advocacy that this whole round should revolve around.
The less the neg answers case, the less likely I am to vote for them. If you don't have a case neg, please contextualize your offcase to the aff.
Given equal debating, I tend aff on case.

Top-level note: I was a pretty active debater for most of high school and did attend the TOC, so I am familiar with most debate lingo. However, for your topic-specific terminology, I may not be as familiar, so please do explain any acronyms/key terms well if you use them in the debate.

I will vote on any argument with the exception of arguments such as racism good, sexism good, etc. These args clearly don't have a place within the debate space, but you do you otherwise.

For the novices reading this paradigm: Welcome to debate! You've entered a fantastic, semi-stressful, and enjoyable community of people who share many of your interests. Feel free to ask me any questions before the round if you need assistance, or for any clarifications after the round.

Top Level;

--- Flow - for the novices I'm judging, this is particularly important.

--- Clarity first - This means both in terms of spreading and clearly explaining arguments and their implications. I will not do any work for either side.

--- Line by line is important and please do it in a coherent order so it is easy to flow you all.

--- I don't like reading ev, but I will probably end up doing it - I will only do if it is the card is flagged by a debater or the content of the card is being represented differently for both teams. If there is an insufficient amount of line by line/lack of clash on a flow, reading cards mean you've effectively put the round into my hands, which is not a place you want to be.

--- Zero risk is a thing, but it must be overwhelmingly well-debated.

--- Smart analytics > bad cards/args - if the frontpage headline this morning will take out the DA but you don't have a card, the analytic might be the best way to go if debated well. I would hope to reward out-of-round prior knowledge about the world.

--- I will try to protect the 2NR from 2AR newness, but 2NR should be explicit about this.

--- Tech > truth.

--- tag team is ok, but don't dominate your partner.

Case

Affs seriously go around reading the most illogical, irrational internal links ever (I know I'm guilty of this as well).

Neg teams should exploit these weaknesses to whittle down the case substantially.

Aff teams should attempt to explain this illogical internal links clearly and tell a coherent story; it will make my life easier when I'm thinking about it at the end of the round.

Good case debates = nice speaker points

DAs

I love them. Have a specific link or link contextualization, a logical internal link also helps, and aff specific turns case arguments go a long way towards winning the debate when combined with proper case mitigation.

Politics DAs are a personal favorite as well so don't be afraid to go for them in front of me.

For the aff, the internal links are probably silly and most DAs are non-unique so I advise that you should point out the logical flaws in arguments and make them a central part of the final rebuttals.

Counterplans

My favorite CPs are PICs and intelligent multiplank advantage CPs, but I'm good with almost all types of counterplans being run.

I do generally think fiat should be certain and immediate, but I am open to a different interpretation based on how it is debated.

I'll go either way on judge kick.

I'm a 2N so I might lean a little neg on theory, but a smart aff team can flip me to vote for them easily.

If going for theory as a reason to reject the team, please explain why rejecting the arg won't solve or I'll just reject the arg.

When aff, please impact out your deficits or links to the net-benefit args. I think the 1AR is the best spot to do this.

Topicality

Topicality can go either way. I won't lean aff or neg instinctively.

I feel compelled to think that legal precision outweighs limits, but limits outweigh everything else. However, if you think some other impacts is compelling for you, go for it.

FW/T-USFG

I won't reject all nontraditional affirmatives and will vote aff if they outdebate the neg.

However, I'd appreciate the aff giving me a model of debate and clearly (simplistic explanations are always better) explain DAs to FW. I do not like cheapshot args that the 2AC makes in a blip to mess with the 2N, so if I did vote for you on that args your speaks will not be pretty.

I generally think skills offense is best vs. identity affs and fairness vs. high-theory Baudrillard nonsense but you do you.

also, i'm not super nice to debate bad args. Debate is a valuable, time-intensive, and reflective activity and because hoofd said serious online video games might be bad does not mean I will.

I will vote for them. Some of these debates can be hyper-nuanced and interesting to listen to.

For a K to get my ballot, please do the following:

--- a well-explained thesis level claim about the 1AC

--- specific link work to the aff

--- explain how the alt and !s interact with all of the 1AC and how the alt solves the link

--- If you kick the alt, explain how FW/other things provide uniqueness for the link

I'd ask you refrain from using a lot of jargon; I might get it and maybe you might, but if the other team can't clearly explain and answer your args the debate will be a lot worse and your speaks will reflect that.

When aff vs. K, the 1AR should have chosen when perm/no link or case outweighs/alt-fails is the route they'll be going, though generally soft-left affs go for the perm (albeit the links on this topic are very good) and hard-right affs should go for case-outweighs/alt-fails.

29-29.5 --- Nice job. You've mastered the skills of novices and need a few more nuanced. Should be top ten speaker.

very little offends me. it should be simple for you to prevail if it's so wrong and you're so right.

in my personal career i primarily went for policy aff's and k's or t on the neg. i generally think that good things are good and bad things are bad. i have few stipulations (probably even less than most) on how the "rules" of debate ought to work, if you win the thing that you are running then i will vote on it.

1) an argument is a claim and a reason (at least).

2) evidence supports your argument, evidence is NOT your argument

3) i won't kick arguments for you

4) line by line debating is non-optional

5) tech > truth (this has nuances, you won't read them if i write them...)

5) if you cannot collapse, you are a bad debater

the most significant thing to remember is that i am a human (by most definitions) that does make mistakes (despite my best attempts). i'm generally proficient at flowing, and i will flow the entire round-barring something catastrophic. i've had excellent and extensive conversations with many other college-age judges about this, during which i have concluded the following. my job as a judge is to do my best to fairly adjudicate the round to the best of my ability, which i can assure you that i will do. if you feel the need to hammer me in the post-round, by all means, go for it, but make note that i will respect you as much as you respect me. there are right and wrong decisions in varsity debates, and judges can & do fail to deliver the right ones, which is a regrettable, yet inevitable part of the game; i do my absolute best to avoid this, and i can assure you i have interpreted every argument on the flow to the best of my working ability.

now, much like keryk kuiper outlines, i am a fairly expressive judge. i laugh when things are funny, i do make faces at things, and i have been known to throw flow paper about in a rather dramatic way. you are under no obligation to change strategies based on the way i react to it, and you will win something that i don't "like" as long as you are winning it on the flow. you may, however, choose to alter it. that is your right and your decision. you are also a human with "free will". do as you please - but note that reacting to those things is a crucial part of becoming a better debater - and if your argument is so bad that i look like i’m about to throw up, good luck getting me to hack for you in the rfd.

i believe it goes without saying i would much rather judge a well-executed policy v policy round than a poorly executed k v k round. just because i have a better substantive grasp on a larger body of k lit than an average clash judge does not mean that i think you should pref me higher as a k team. my ideal debate is something you have the best grasp of, and that you are the most excited about. if that happens to be the k, then wonderful, but if it is also a CP you have labored over then i am equally as enthusiastic. all good debate teams do their best to exert themselves on arguments that they think have the most merit - that is what i want to hear.

below are, as the intro would suggest, my many conflicting opinions on debate. do not confuse this with rules for a round. these are just my personal thoughts, and i take pride in my ability to objectively adjudicate whatever presents itself to me.

k things

K's proper: LT PN was explicitly a set col team for many moons, so i am personally most familiar with that set of lit in the context of my own competitive practice. in my time as a coach, i've also worked on plenty of semio-cap/po-mo/ "high theory" based k's. external to debate, i'm fairly well-versed in anti-capitalist and queer theory literature. this is not an excuse to not judge instruct. i have a strong distaste for k teams whose strategy is to confuse the opponent out of ballots with large, and often unnecessary words. i find this practice incredibly disingenuous and i have (unhappily) noticed its presence increase over time. if you rely on obfuscation, the argument is probably quite poor, and you should not be reading it. on a personal note, in working with the lovely lila lavender for quite some time, i have found myself more drawn to k v k debate over time, as i firmly believe it is the most interesting and innovative form that debate can take.

K on the aff: you must be willing to commit. it is far too often that i judge k aff teams that are determined to make their aff more middle-of-the-road/palatable. clever k teams should be able to achieve equilibrium with effective policy teams with the amount of tools at their disposal and yet they seem unwilling to use them. i am far more willing to hear that debate is better with no competition models, debate should be thrown off a cliff, or that debating the resolution has no intrinsic value than your average clash judge. that being said, i have a stronger preference for k affs that defend something material (specific political project) than the average k judge. too many k affs shy away from fiating the alt, but i digress. as far as content goes, the material that i have the most personal familiarity is outlined above. i think lila says it best when they say "If you are going to reject the res, which is totally cool with me, you should make sure to have justifications as to why the res is bad, and why rejecting it on the affirmative is key."

if you are going to perform, and it is significant to you that the performance is flowed a certain way, indicate that.

i will probably not flow your overview if it is longer than 30 seconds.

i will definitely not flow your overview if it requires a separate sheet.

K on the neg: should deal with the case in some way (either moot it entirely on the FW flow/ fiat the alt/ what have you). generating philosophical or research practice based competition is most likely to be persuasive to me - i am of the many that believe beyond game theory, debate is a research practice. one team will win their FW interpretation, as most other standards are arbitrary. same content familiarity applies here. generally, the neg shouldn't be lazy with their links, and the aff should be smarter debating fiat arguments. i prioritize specificity and spin above all else. i also think affs should be smarter (and earlier) on the FW flow.

my favorite part of nick rosenbaum's theory of debate is that "you do not need an alternative if you are winning framework OR if your links are material DA's to the aff's implementation where the squo would be preferable OR if your theory of power overdetermines the aff's potential to be desirable OR if you can think of another reason you don't need an alt." same material praxis alternative preference as k aff's (internal or external to debate). fiating mindset shifts/epistemic reorientations (i have yet to hear a sound description of what that is) is probably abusive and generally not a good argument. i will (and have - dont ask) vote on death good - if you win it.

FW: i generally believe that framework is probably true to some extent, and net good for clash v k affs because reciprocity is good and so on and so forth. as my judging record would indicate, i am neg leaning in K v FW debates, mostly for the reasons outlined in the k aff section of this paradigm. i find tournament and season preparation disparity arguments fairly silly. for the negative, use smart defensive tactics like switch-side debating and TVA's, explain the flaws in the counter-interpretation (unlimited topic, links to aff offense), and produce smart arguments about limits, mechanism education, or clash.

making sure there is fairness in a competition between two teams is one of the judge's main responsibilities. judges are fundamentally expected to evaluate the discussion honestly; forcing them to disregard fairness in that appraisal removes the prerequisite for debate. on the aff, you should impact turn the process of policy debates on the topic - this is distinct from the affs on the topic. if you win that the process of debating the topic is bad, then preserving fairness is futile to the game.

policy things

T: probably makes its way into 75% of my own 1NR’s, competing interps/quality of evidence comes first. do not hinge your strat on some vague cross ex answer, clear and concise arguments only. additionally, both or either team reading blocks through the rebuttals without refuting the other team's arguments in depth is very boring and not something I want to watch.

Theory: See T. I err aff on condo generally and for the sake of transparency thing, most consult/agent counterplans are probably abusive, but don't let that sway you, i will still vote on the flow work (yes i am a strong believer in the debate truth that neg fiat is bad). i'm predisposed to believe exactly what YOU think debate ought to be.

Da's: make sure you do plenty of impact work, and PLEASE articulate why the impact of your DA overwhelms the harms of the aff. Links exist on a spectrum; the "chance of a link" has to be qualified and then incorporated into the risk assessment component of impact calculus. Expert turns case analysis is invaluable. “Any risk” is inane. Below some level of probability, signal should be overwhelmed by noise, or perhaps the opposite effect might occur. Pretending that one can calculate risk precisely is stupid. Are you really sure that the risk of a disad is fifteen percent? Are you sure it’s not, say, twenty? Or maybe ten? Or, God forbid, twenty-five? If you are able to calculate risk with such precision, please quit debate and join the DIA. Your country needs you, citizen. If not, recognize that risks can be roughly calculated in a relative way, but that the application of mathematical models to debate is a (sometimes) useful heuristic, not an independently viable tool for evaluation. - mollison stolen from matheson which has now trickled down to here.

CP's: win the net ben and how you access it, otherwise i will vote on a nice Aff perm. That being said, If a perm is present in the 1ar, I will NOT automatically judge kick the CP if the squo is preferable. In this scenario, the 2nr would need to instruct me as to why I should do this, however I think judge kick goes aff easily in the presence of a perm.I think lots of counterplans that steal much of the aff (interpret that as you wish) are illegitimate and the aff should hammer them. the aff still needs has to win theory regardless of my personal disdain for certain CP's. i do like a well executed tricky PIC though on a NATO topic, i find them widely entertaining. not sure of their legitimacy, but at least i'll be in a good mood.

final notes

have fun, debate should be something you enjoy doing. be nice and cordial to your opponents, that being said don't be afraid to be assertive. don't clip cards. i follow the nsda handbook re: evidence violation, so any of those issues must be resolved through tab. if the tournament is not NSDA sanctioned and i am instructed to make the decision, i will default to my best interpretation of what "good practice" looks like on the current college circuit/"general accepted community norms". all that good stuff

tldr:

- online debate is hard, but please try to be timely and efficient. i'd appreciate if you have your camera on, but i understand that's not possible for everyone. make sure you're clear. if my camera is off, make sure i'm there and ready for the speech.

- i don't like reading through card docs, but will if i have to or am told to. spin matters. i often find that my decision tends to differ from other judges because of this. evidence quality matters, but if neither team tells me what is wrong with the other team's evidence or why their evidence is good, I will not make that determination myself. there is a debate to be had about the quality of evidence, and I view it as interventionist to decide that myself.

- nothing pissed me off more as a debater than seeing paradigms that say "specific strategies = speaks boosted." yes, in-depth, specific strategies are valuable and will probably make the debate easier for the neg, but are impossible to prep against every aff for many teams, especially with the proliferation of new affs at end of the year tournaments. what matters most is your ability to contextualize whatever you're going for to the affirmative. that's something that not many teams do well, and should also be rewarded!

- i won't hesitate to stop the round if anything racist/homophobic/sexist/etc happens. please please please be nice and don't be arrogant or problematic. there's a difference between standing your ground and laughing at the other team's arguments.

ks:

- stolen from margaret hecht: "i am admittedly not the best judge for critical arguments. my issue isn't ideological, rather a lack of experience and research. i have no preferences for what you read, relation to the topic, etc., and will do my best to judge these debates, but please don't assume that i know the implication of historical examples and/or have a deep understanding of the literature base." run what you want and if you win the flow, i'll vote for you. that being said, pretend i don't know anything about it. explain it without buzzwords. stay away from long overviews. clash.

- you probably need an alt absent winning framework or strong case turns arguments. make sure the alt solves the links.

- weighing the plan is probably good, but i'll try to be objective about it. i find i vote aff most often when the neg doesn't articulate clearly what the world of their interpretation looks like or have sufficient defense against the aff's impacts.

- on the aff: going for impact turns/heg good/cap good/etc and extinction outweighs has a special place in my heart. or go for the perm, also a fan, just stick to a strat. you're not going to win no link against cap when you have an economy advantage.

k affs:

- never been in a k v k debate [other than going for the cap k which barely counts]. not sure if i'm confident making the correct decision [expect for cap or the other policy basics]. do what you want with this information.

- go for a da! even if it's heg! just clearly articulate the link. i'm more inclined to lean neg on the link debate if the aff clearly doesn't do anything.

- fairness is an impact and probably the best one, but the neg needs to explain it in a way that makes it one. also a fan of clash style impacts. other impacts will probably be not strategic and unpersuasive in front of me. tvas and ssd are not always necessary but usually are helpful. explain how it solves the aff's offense, don't just repeat it accesses their literature. case lists are very helpful, but make sure they're contextualized to the aff's interpretation.

- on the aff, i usually find impact turns most convincing. i tend to view limits/predictability/ground/etc as linear impacts, so going for defense isn't the best strat in front of me, but if it's done well you can totally win. I tend to vote neg when ssd or the tva is mishandled and there's not enough defense extended to the negative's impact or IL.

- i have little topic knowledge, so explain what your interpretation is to me like i'm a child. that being said, I've been thrown into a couple of t debates with little topic knowledge and found that the only real times this hinders me is in predictability debates when both teams insist their cards have topic experts without doing any comparisons or when each team spews case lists without explaining what those affirmatives are. i don't know what "new triers aff" is. explain.

- limits are very compelling, but predictability is probably the best impact. aff ground can totally win you the debate, but you have to do the work to make sure it outweighs whatever the neg's impact is. aff ground is most compelling when there's a structural reason the neg's interpretation makes it impossible to be aff [for example, no solvency deficits to agent cps or infinite pics existing] and when the aff is able to quantify and compare the magnitude of the ground lost to the magnitude of affs included under their interpretation. just saying you lose core of the topic affs means nothing and will ensure a negative ballot.

- like practically every judge, i default to competing interpretations, but mainly because people don't go for reasonability right. if you can do it, do it. contextualize your offense to the neg's interpretation. extend enough defense so that your interpretation is reasonable.

theory:

- don't spread through your blocks, clash!

- absent being dropped, the only reason to reject the team is probably condo. make sure to have clear offense, impact comparisons, and inroads to the other team's offense no matter which side of this debate you're on!

cps:

- cps that compete off of certainty or immediacy make me sad, but i understand they're necessary and have went for plenty myself.

- perm texts!!! write them!!! still, slow down in competition debates. i've been on both sides of these debates, but still get confused.

- sufficiency framing means practically nothing. spend your time explaining why there's no impact to the solvency deficit instead.

das:

- winning turns case is nice, but it's not always necessary [i also don't know why some people give it so much weight]. i would invest time on it if you're behind on case and need to mitigate it.

- don't forget about impact calc. i used to blow it off, but judging has made me realize that it's a lifesaver in close debates.

- i love a good politics debate, but storytelling and evidence quality will make or break it. for the aff, often times, I've found the weakest part of the DA and the part teams aren't prepared to defend is the internal link. although i understand the impulse to go for non-unique or thumpers, which are often strategic, don't be afraid to diversify your 2ar options.

- not much else to say. das are cool.

Tech > truth

I am most comfortable with policy arguments, but will do my best to adjudicate the round based on the arguments presented in the speeches. Out debate the other team on your k and I will have no problem voting for you.

I am not familiar with the current topic and Yale will be the first tournament I judge this year. Make sure to include any explanations of things specific to your aff or about really niche parts of the topic. I think this is most important for T debates as I have no idea what topic consensus looks like, what affs are being run, how big the topic is, etc. Broad claims about how the topic is bad for one side or how some types of affs on the topic are trash will not be persuasive without detailed, warranted analysis. Be descriptive.

Don't like theory debates that much. Condo is the only reason to reject the team, but condo is probably good. However, solvency advocate theory, international fiat bad and object fiat bad are pretty persuasive reasons to reject the counterplan. Perms are probably your best bet against process counterplans.

Fairness is an impact on T-USfg (probably the best one), but is very difficult to explain well. Invest time in it. Utilize TVAs. I think the most persuasive strategy for K Affs against T-USfg is to impact turn the neg team's model. I usually don't find middle-of-the-road approaches with counterinterpretations very persuasive.

If your aff against the K, I find FW and util very convincing. Utilize your aff and impact turn the alt. If your neg and running the K, I think winning FW or that the links turn the aff is important. I think most alts are silly and don't do much (unless the aff team drops it or you win you can fiat away everything).

Politics DAs are inherently bad, but are necessary. They were a majority of my 2NRs in high school. Go for a clever ptx DA and read good evidence and I'll probably be happy and boost your speaks.

Background -- I was a 2N/1A for four years in high school, debated on the local (CDL) and national circuit, qualified to the TOC my senior year. I defended a climate change aff my freshman year, soft left ableism affs my sophomore/junior years, and a big-stick Japan aff my senior year (with a k aff in the mix at a local tournament). I went for primarily policy arguments my Freshman year, topicality and cap/security/biopolitics ks my sophomore/junior years, and multi-plank cps and topic DAs my senior year. Almost every time I went against a k aff, I went for framework.

TLDR -- I think there’s a general assumption that if a debater didn’t debate a certain argument, they are somehow incompetent at evaluating it. This is complete bullsh*t. I had to learn the ins and outs of a huge range of arguments, debate them, beat them, and be crushed embarrassingly by them. Even if I didn’t read any of Baudrillard’s books, I still know what a winning Baudrillard debate looks like from either side. Even though I didn’t ever go for a politics DA in my 2NRs, I knew when someone was being horribly out teched by DAs as terrible as USMCA. I evaluate tech over truth and will make a decision based on what I have on my flows. You do you because I’d rather see a good debate that shows off the best version of your skills than a watered-down adaption of your abilities.

Several caveats,

-- I don’t tolerate ableist, sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic language or behavior (obviously).

-- I tend to be biased against assholes or assholy behavior, regardless of the argument run

-- In terms of k v k debates, I’ve only been a part of cap k debates and am less equipped to understand a fast-paced and highly complex k v k debate that involves something other than cap. Doesn’t mean I’m not open to them, just that I’m not as familiar with them.

Otherwise, everything below is just how I think of certain arguments on a technical level. It’s to inform your in-round presentation of arguments, not to discourage you from reading certain arguments altogether:

T - Underutilized strategy. Competing interps makes more sense to me intuitively than reasonability. One of my favorite arguments as a 2N. Because my senior year was the arms sales topic, I have a special place in my heart for T-Subs (don't know if it's making as big a comeback for CJR though).

Theory - @2As if you plan on going for this, don’t spread theory blocks a mile a minute throughout the entire debate and go for it as a last-minute cheap shot. If there’s obvious in-round abuse, feel free to go for theory for 5 minutes in the 2AR, but don’t spend 5 minutes on something barely developed in previous speeches. I can be persuaded by condo bad, but I think theory on cps and ks (e.g. 50 state FIAT bad, process cps bad, PIKs) are used best as justification for the perm debate. You do you though, and I'll evaluate tech>truth.

CPs -

Adv CPs -- Adv CPs that rehighlight aff ev are great against big-stick affs. Stack on as many planks as you want, but if you really need all fifteen planks to “sufficiently” solve, the counterplan probably overwhelms the risk of the link/links to the net ben.

Process CPs -- If you can be creative with your tricky process cp and justify perm competition, go right ahead. That being said, if the aff has a tricky way of articulating a perm that you don’t catch, you’re in big trouble. I personally find it compelling if you read ev that justifies your cp as being a unique part of the lit base. Go further than definitional debates or I’ll probably err aff.

DAs - Please try a little harder with your turns case “analysis.” Smart Analytics >>> Crappy 10-card generic link walls.

Ks -- Case-specific ks that were researched by the debater will receive ridiculously high speaker points. Creative and offensive link analysis that rehighlights aff evidence is pretty damning and can win debates if mishandled. I think the neg’s burden is to prove the aff is a bad idea, so you don’t technically need an alt to win.

That being said, most k debates end up coming off really defensively, making it pretty easy for the aff to win. I think both perm/link turn and extinction outweighs strategies are perfectly viable strategies against ks. Cross ex against ks can be the most damning parts of a debate.

K Affs --

@2As -- Don’t go for a crap-ton of one-line DAs from the 2AC in your 2AR or you’re going to lose. Part of being skilled in debate is being able to select and capitalize on offensive winning arguments. Be creative with your counter interps and what they allow.

@2Ns -- Don’t just read the same script of framework blocks in your 2NC and then cross your fingers and pray things’ll work out come rebuttal time. Contextualize your speech to the debate and answer the aff as it evolves. Point out in-round abuses, quote their ev, hold them to the explanations of their aff. Be a little more creative with your framework interpretations. **Run a non-state framework or a framework that includes some k affs. It can absorb a lot of their state-based offense if you’re tricky enough (Seriously, I did this senior year, and it can really be damning; I will give you ridiculously high speaks if you execute this strategy well or at least attempt it, regardless of if you win or lose the debate).

**K v K debates above^ -- Whether the aff gets a perm is up for debate

Framing -- It was suggested to me by a certain unnamed Payton debater to update my paradigm clarifying my stance on soft left affs/framing. I'm definitely NOT in the camp of "I don't reallyyy evaluate the framing page" or "I'm not a fan of X type of aff." As said above, I defended affs across the spectrum in high school and debated both sides of the util good/bad, predictability/magnitude first, and conjunctive fallacy debates. Personally, I enjoyed defending a soft left aff more bc I think they generally have the advantage of being truthier than affs with five different shoddy internal links and outdated impact scenarios (especially on a topic like CJR). That being said, my "stance" is just as stated: tech>truth. If you win the framing page and give me a filter through which to view two competing impacts, I will use that filter. Ofc affirmative teams need to contextualize their framing to the negative's offense (i.e. 2AR on framing that barely touches the DA flow isn't a winning 2AR). However, a neg team shouldn't just read their pre-scripted util good/magnitude first block every round and just expect framing to not be an issue. Like you would any argument, answer the specific warrants extended from the aff's framing cards.

Speaks: They’re arbitrary. If I’m impressed with your debating and creativity in that given round and expect you to break, you’ll most likely be getting above a 28.8. I feel like 28-28.7 is a point range for debaters that I think have a solid skill set, but may need more practice as a debater getting to know their evidence better, adding more warrants and/or ethos to speeches, or may have some organizational hiccups. Below a 28 is reserved for debaters who still are developing foundational debate skills. If you make me laugh and/or take creative and smart argument risks, I’ll boost your speaks.

After Round: Don’t be afraid to nag me with questions after round, but there’s a distinction between asking questions with the intent of improving in future debates and passive aggressively postrounding with the intent of undermining a decision you’re super pouty about

-- I will start prep time if you're taking extra time deleting analytics before sending out your doc. While I think it's preferable to just send analytics (what's the worst that could happen honestly?), especially in a somewhat unreliable digital environment, if you do delete them you have to take prep time (not tech time or non-prep before-speech time) to do it.

-- If possible, please turn on your camera. I won't penalize anyone for not doing this during round (especially if your circumstances restrict you from doing so), but it is helpful (and more transparent) to see everyone's faces during the round.

-- If it seems I'm not paying attention during cross-ex, I'm most likely just taking notes on the cross-ex on a different tab while listening.

-- I'm interested in seeing a 2NR on T-subsets. I saw a couple of speeches where this was extended into the block, but it never reached the 2NR. Obviously don't extend this if it's not your winning strat, but just saying.

-- I've noticed a lot of aff teams seem to forget their aff exists in kritik debates. @2As your aff is your strongest weapon against a k! Extend it, defend its internal links, its solvency, weigh it against the k!

-- I need a clear extension of the 1AC's impacts and internal links in every aff speech. I'm not just going to grant you everything in the 1AC because you read it at the beginning of the debate. Like any argument, you have to explicitly and consistently extend it at the top of the 2AC, 1AR, and 2AR

TLDR:

-- The platonic ideal of a judge is a valueless, disinterested critic of argument of maximal intellectual ability and openness. Teams who agree that all debaters ought to be entitled to this type of judge and judging (or as close as is humanly possible) should pref me. Good and smart/intellectual debaters of all stripes of style and substance should pref me. I have no reason to believe my personal convictions about debate, the world, etc. should hold any significance to the round I am judging. I will vote for literally anything.

-- Unlike many in the debate community, I want to be judging you. I really enjoy judging debates and do so diligently and with critical attention. With that said, bad debates are just not where I want to be— pref accordingly.

-- I think I am very good at rendering fair, correct decisions and often get upset listening to seemingly idiosyncratic RFDs, products of laziness and/or subjectivity. Hard working debaters have their toil, deserving of reward, negated by whims they could not have possibly expected or tailored to. I know debaters deserve so much better, and I do everything in my power to provide that. The path-of-least-resistance (predictable according to an offense-defense paradigm, i.e. non-idiosyncratic and predictable) path I take to my decisions are visually discernible from my flow.

On clash debates:

My voting record proves that I am 100% agnostic in these debates. I am as apathetic voting on 'extinction outweighs' as I am 'extinction doesn't matter in the face of the revolution'.

Just as I can't unduly hack for classical liberalism, I also won't do for you the work against it that many these days are taking for granted. Instead, everything from first principles, acknowledging certain args are easier (requiring less work) to win, like maybe human liberty good?

I am well-versed in the k as a practice in debate, and I know quite a lot of lit quite well. I most frequently went for settler colonialism and, among debate applications, probably know the most about afropessimism, but I always enjoyed a high theory injection for what it let me do. I now study a lot of German thinkers & political philosphy at university, do scholarly work spec. on Nietzsche, etc.

Insert typical ‘my background does not mean I will hack for the k; on the contrary, I know when..’. Once again, this is good for those who want to go HAM on smart stuff (for you needn’t worry about leaving me behind) but bad for ill-concieved strategies, those hoping to gaslight judges into equating multisyllabic tropes with profundity, etc. I do actually appreciate informedly-used jargon (using one word to express an assemblage of ideas) and abstraction generally. The throughline, again: good debate is good before me, and vice versa.

My senior year at a very small program, I (2N) primarily went for kritikal arguments & t/fw on the negative and wrote kooky fringe policy affs.

Policy

K vs Policy Affs:

Yes! Probably my favorite type of debate. The neg shouldn't be lazy with their links, and the aff should be smarter debating fiat arguments. I prioritize explanation and specificity above all else.

Please clash on the level of framework. This hugely important section often becomes ships passing in the night with the neg reading some epistemology DA and the aff talking about procedural things, neither side making inroads to other team's arguments. In many of these debates, whoever wins this section of the flow wins the debate, so invest!

I have read in debate (and actively research and read for pleasure) various flavors of settler colonialism and anti-Blackness, imperialism, capitalism, semiocapitalism, IR theories, Asian and Jewish identity, militarism, queerness, Berlant/affect theory, Baudrillard, Virilio, Kroker, Nietzsche, flavors of debate pomo, and many others. I read and think about critical theory a lot, so I likely have a working literacy in whatever body of literature you want to read.

You do not need an alternative if you are winning framework OR if your links are material DA's to the aff's implementation where the squo would be preferable OR if your theory of power overdetermines the aff's potential to be desirable OR if you can think of another reason you don't need an alt. With that said, I do like when alts are coherent to the strategy of the k or heavily influence framework.

Framework vs K Affs:

TLDR: I am agnostic in evaluating these debates, and I vote SOLELY off the flow. I am great for either side in these debates, see TLDR.

I have been on both sides of this debate. Purely theoretically— that is, in an equally matched round, not any real round— I lean negative, as I probably find the perfect framework + case/presumption strategy more convincing than general answers. Nonetheless, absolutely here for aff teams that disrupt the assumed terms of the debate to such an extent that probably true negative arguments lose their compelling power. Doing less than that can still result in an aff ballot, considering many neg teams will not be close to my above-described ideal. So the aff can and will win many of these debates, but disproving the neg's claims beyond asserting that the case is good is absolutely essential.

Assuming a smart negative, affs probably will need to prove why the process of resolutional debate the negative is demanding them to adhere to is bad or why the aff's model solves the neg's offense.

I think a we-meet stemming from the debaters 'doing'/discussing something related to [resolution topic] rarely passes the smell test. The words resolved, USFG, and [topic word] deserve attention, so (in order of preference) impact turn or we meet/counter-interp, but a strategy based just on being thematically germane to the resolution is probably quite vulnerable.

I can find TVAs that capture aff literature and read it on the neg arguments very convincing.

I am very open to 'debate bad' claims. I don't agree, but who cares? Even better for the aff are 'policy-centered discussions of this resolution are bad' claims.

Related to the above point, I am most persuaded by k aff answers to framework that take an extreme and unapologetic stance. Playing the middle ground is risky, because let's be honest, you almost definitely underlimit the topic etc., so just tell me why that doesn't matter.

Fairness can be an impact if articulated as one. Yes, it is an internal link to the positive benefits of debate, but I buy it if framed as as a prerequisite to anything good coming out of the activity.

I think it's fundamental for the negative to have a role in the debate. I think this need becomes especially magnified in debates where the aff proposes a method of self-care. I believe that the aff's strategy is probably good, but if it would be inappropriate for the negative to negate the value of the method and similarly violent for them to exclude the aff from debate, I don't see how a debate can occur, and I'll be very sympathetic to negative arguments about the inhibition of clash/fairness/any good byproduct of a debate happening.

Tell me whether I should be voting for a model of debate or just acting as a referee on this round. This frame of reference is something I utilized in every fw, t, and theory debate, and I think it is super valuable for judge instruction and helps clean up messy debates.

K vs K Affs:

Can be very interesting, and I'd love to hear it if you understand and can execute your argument. I am not interested in poorly executed k strats chosen because you think I'd prefer it or because they will confuse your opponents. This applies everywhere, but strategies premised upon confusing/annoying opponents are bad for debate, and I would rather not hear them; obviously, there are a few exceptions in the lit (we’ll always have the dada aff, keryk <3).

If either team wants this to be a "method debate," clearly delineate what that means, how I decide, etc. I view debates comparing method solvency alone as often missing the central component of winning links and other forms of offense, so tell me how to navigate the decision.

Word PIKs and other shenanigans - totally justified and a smart strategy. Truly no rules in these debates; the affirmative set the anarchic precedent, so I'll buy anything from anyone (again, just means no prejudices on my end; it's all always about what y'all debate out).

DA:

I think most politics DAs are garbage from the lens of political science, but debate =/= reality, and I really enjoy listening to an expertly debated politics DA. Read lots of cards and incorporate smart analytics/logic.

Receptive to aff ptx theory

Links exist on a spectrum; the "chance of a link" has to be qualified and then incorporated into the risk assessment component of impact calculus.

Expert turns case analysis is invaluable.

CP:

So as to incentivize contextual judge instruction, I’m not going to put fourth a rule on whether or not I’ll default to judge kick. Tell me what to do or face my discretionary decision.

I think lots of counterplans that steal much of the aff (interpret that as you wish) are bad for debate and unfair and the aff should hammer them. However, my personal opinion doesn't inform my voting; the aff still needs has to win theory or, even better, competion. As a judge, I kinda enjoy these debates cuz techy and words, but at the level of the activity, I beg for the aff to level the playing field with sense.

CPs should ideally have solvency advocates in the 1nc, but whatever. I do think CPs lacking solvency advocates magnifies the strategy skew of conditionality.

Sufficiency framing is ridiculous. Not that it's wrong, but it's just like eh, why even say this? Solvency deficits will always need to be weighed vs a risk of the net-benefit. I'll end up having to do this, so you're better off telling me how I ought to do it and net-out.

Topicality:

Yes please IF the debates will be techy, organized, and clash-filled; both or either team reading blocks through the rebuttals without refuting the other teams arguments in depth is very boring and not something I want to watch.

*I don't know community norms on the topic, so argue from first principles. Also slow/break down acronyms and other esoteric vernacular if you want me to render the most accurate possible decision.

Theory:

As a 2n, I resent 2A's that explode theory arguments shadow-extended in the 1ar because they've lost everything else. Theory blips are probably bad for the community. With that said, I understand doing what you have to do to win, so I will vote for whatever, but I'd ideally prefer coherent strategies.

I have literally no predispositions on whether condo is good or bad. I tend to think the problem is the abusiveness of counterplans, not the number thereof (cuz let's be real, that's what aff teams are actually objecting to, albeit under a different name), but I enjoy a good condo debate from both sides.

I will vote on any theory argument if executed properly. I don't like how many judges will in practice only vote on condo, even if the usually throw-away arg was dropped or seriously won; this practice is sneaky and bad, and I promise not to replicate it. I literally will vote for anything. If you’re actually up for the task (ask yourself), please do convince me why 50 state fiat in a CP kicked in the 2nc is a reason to vote aff. Doing so requires great skill and risk (making it much of the final rebuttal), but if done well, speaker points will rain because I think good theory debate is cool. You have to be so thoughtful and clashing to do it, though.

In-Round Conduct:

I will not adjudicate on things that happened outside of the round. There is no way for me to make an accurate determination in these cases. My ballot does not endorse any debater's character.

Do not steal prep, even a little! It is so prolific. It is rude to me, your opponents, and will result in tanked speaks.

Do not clip cards.

Clarity

My experience is in policy debate, so I am not familiar with trad or local LD, but I've judged a handful of nat circ LD rounds, including outrounds. My senior year, my partner and I were flex (mostly policy affs and k's on the neg). The policy community considers/prefs me as a flex individual. I am well-versed in all argument types, but I most enjoy clash (policy aff v k or k aff v t/fw) debates. I also enjoy and am very comfortable judging straight policy/LARP debates.

I am very competent at judging fast, techy debates; debaters that embody this or otherwise want to be judged by someone with extensive experience in policy debate across the ideological spectrum should pref me. I am most qualified to judge TOC style and tier LD debates (ie those closest to circuit policy). These are also the LD debates I most enjoy being in.

Tricks: I will vote on them, and I have no preconceived ‘this is too stupid to vote on’ threshold, but I still would prefer not to be in these debates. Impacting beyond “they dropped this” is absolutely essential, and I won’t vote on any trick I don’t have flowed. As I said above, I was/am a very fast debater and want to judge fast debates, but if I miss #7 of 30 one-line analytic voting issues, sorry.

Quick Notes

Debate is supposed to be a fun activity, while ultimately debate is a competition, please recognize the other values of the debate community. Be respectful to your opponents and work as a team in round with your partner. I did not go to camp and haven't debated on the topic but I have some limited topic knowledge, make sure to explain any topic specific jargon you use.

Case

I think the case debate is heavily underutilized. I'm a fan of a well-developed case strategy. I enjoy hearing impact turns and specific circumvention arguments.

I don't have a ton of experience with T debates but I'm familiar with the basics.

I am willing to vote on most das, however if the da has poor quality evidence and the aff team is able to point the internal link flaws in the da can be taken down to zero risk. I would avoid running any rider DAs. Both teams need to include turns case and strong impact calc.

Be careful with your plan texts - aff teams should take advantage of any solvency deficits here (since neg teams often mess up with cp texts). I'm not a huge fan of theoretically questionable cps like process cps, agent cps, etc, however I can persuaded to vote neg on theory if debated well. I think cps are most legitimate when there are specific solvency advocates.

Don't assume I know the k, the neg has the burden to not just rely upon jargon. Aff teams should pay attention to k tricks (floating piks, fiat illusory, etc.) and use theory to not let the neg team get away with more than they should. I would say I am more of the middle of the road so both sides should prioritize framework. I tend to think neg teams need to defend an alt, but the burden of plan focus/rhetoric/etc. is to be debated.

Introduction

In my mind there are two serious reasons you might be reading my paradigm: either 1. you are determining prefs before a tournament or 2. you are determining how I will respond to your strategy before the round. I have organized my paradigm accordingly.

Listed below are the things I think are most important to point out about the way I judge, and the places where I might differ from the "consensus" of the debate community. If I do not bring up a certain issue, you should assume that I adopt the general "consensus view." If there is a particularly question that is important to you that I do not mention, you should absolutely feel free to email me before a tournament or even before a round. I will not write you an essay on what arguments to go for but I will answer straightforward yes or no questions like "is inserting a card ok if it was read in cx" (yes) or "when debated equally, do you think a textually legitimate but functionally illegitimate perm is valid if both teams agree a counterplan must be textually and functionally competitive" (also yes). If you are unsure whether your question is appropriate, ask anyway.

For Prefs

General

-I like smart arguments. I like line by line. I like spreading (while being clear) and reading lots of cards and comparing evidence.

-I put substantial effort into evaluating every debate I judge to the best of my ability. That being said, the following is a ranking from most to least of my average confidence in evaluating each type of debate: DA/CP/Case Turn v Policy Aff, T v Policy Aff, K v Policy Aff, T/FW/DA v K Aff, K v K Aff.

FW/K

-Debate is a competitive research game with a winner and a loser. It is my job to determine who the winner and the loser are based on who does the better debating in the round. It is very difficult to convince me to vote for something outside of the round (however, a team responding to "out-of-round" arguments should still defend why these arguments exceed the ballot's purview).

-I have not judged many T-USFG/FW debates, so I am not sure how idiosyncratic my approach of them is compared to common community practices. However, all else being equal, I have yet to see a convincing argument for why the affirmative should not have to defend a topical plan.

For Pre- (and Post-) round

General Notes

-Do not over-adapt. Do what you do, do it well, and you will get my ballot.

-I am easily impressed by debaters who demonstrate that they command an extensive but approachable understanding of American foreign policy, the internal politics of other countries, "critical" debates in academia, etc. I am easily depressed by debaters who's knowledge of these subject is superficial or who can not describe these things in a way that is easily digestible. The best way to prove to me your quality as a speaker is to debate an important area of study both in-depth and in a way that a non-expert could understand.

-Read re-highlightings.

-Have perm texts (it's ok to insert them).

-I generally flow in-person debates on paper. If you think you are going too fast you are. If you think you are unclear you are. Please slow down when you are making a lot of non-carded arguments in constructives, especially on T/Theory/K OVs.

-Generally, after the debate ends, I will create a list of the questions I need to resolve to determine which side won. If the answers to any of these questions can clearly be determined based on my flow I will resolve them in the appropriate way. Finally, I will read the evidence presented by both teams on the more ambiguous questions on my list, and incorporate evidence, spin, and analytical arguments into evaluating them. Therefore, while good evidence is always important, evidence quality begins to matter a lot more to me if you have done less work with spin/analytics/etc, which is something you should keep in mind in how you approach your 2nr/2ar.

-Online: I highly encourage you to turn on your video if you are able to do so. Debate is a communicative activity and seeing you speak significantly helps me understand you on a psychological level.

-If the most precise reading of the resolution results in a bad topic, that's a gripe for the topic comity, not a justification for trying to re-define the topic (on either the aff or the neg). Is it possible to win my ballot on debatability? Yes. Does it require a lot of impact work? Also yes.

-Instead of focusing on only winning I should look at debatiability, predictability, or any of their component parts, consider how I will evaluate the round after it ends. Often times both teams have offered multiple lenses that modify one or more of these categories and how they interact. The teams that win T debates in front of me are usually the ones who come closest to identifying all the impacts and framing devices in the debate and explaining how they resolve.

DAs

-I love the politics DA. However, politics DAs require a story. The words "strong-arming moderates" in your uq ev + an "aff requires PC" card do not a story make. I will give good points for (decent) innovative politics strategies because I think they get at the heart of what makes debate fun and the ambiguities that fiat creates.

-There is a direct, positive, linear relationship between the amount of impact calc you do and how likely I am to vote for you. I know that's a cliché and I'm still including it here which should clue you in to how important this is. This also means that I am not a fan of framing contentions, and I only think they are useful in so far as you impact out and do impact calc with the applicable arguments on the appropriate DA or counterplan page. This is not to say I will throw out framing contentions; I will still try to adjudicate the debate as fairly as possible, just know that all else being equal I lean negative on theses issues and if you are running a framing contention you are better off convincing me the neg's impacts are securitized and bad then you are convincing me that DAs are fake.

CPs

-I default to counterplans needing to be functionally and textually competitive. However, the way the affirmative determines if the CP meets that burden is the permutation. Therefore, when debated equally, a textually legitimate but functionally illegitimate perm is valid.

-I am sympathetic to being time pressed in the 2AC and think the threshold for a sufficient explanation for a perm or solvency deficit in the 2AC is that I am able to reasonably predict the subsequent 1AR explanation. However, I am a lot less sympathetic to perms and solvency deficits (especially impacts to solvency deficits) that sound substantially different in the 2AR then they do in the 1AR (or that barely feature in the 1AR but feature prominently in the 2AR). While this is opposite to your strategic incentives, the earlier you explain your arguments the better for me as a judge, and perms or solvency deficits that are explained thoroughly in the 2AC require less time investment to explain in the 1AR, so there is a cost/benefit calculus you have to take on.

-In my mind, perms are a yes/no question. My default way to evaluate perms is to look at each one, see if it clearly establishes that the counterplan is not an opportunity cost the the plan, and depending on if the answer is yes or no discard the counterplan or move on to other arguments respectively. One implication of this is that I am generally unsympathetic to "any risk of a link to the net benefit" answers to the perm. Nevertheless, my stance on perms as a yes/no question is somewhat malleable if debaters make explicit arguments for why I should understand the perm in a different way.

-I view CPs through the lens of negation theory. The negative is, first and foremost, responsible for giving me a reason the aff is bad (not just a reason the aff is less good than it could be). That means all counterplans must have offensive net benefits. I will never vote for a counterplan whose net benefit is better aff solvency. Even if the counterplan solves the aff better, and is mutually exclusive with the aff, it has not provided a reason the aff is bad.

-By default neg leaning on theory. The two most important things to my ballot on a theory argument: 1. Win topic side bias AND/OR how this theory argument implicates this topic specifically AND explain the implications of this. 2. Do impact calc. These debates often get messy, so being simple and formulaic is to your benefit.

-If judge kick is not brought up in the debate, I will kick the CP for you if it has been clearly designated as conditional/dispositional. Otherwise, I will evaluate the arguments for/against judge kick presented in the debate. If the counterplan has not been clearly designated as conditional I will not kick it.

-If neither team forwards a "middle ground" fw interpretation, like "weigh the advantage but also weigh reps links," I will not intervene and make one for you. I will only decide between the fw interpretations forwarded by either side, but a team can make arguments that modifying its fw interpretation in later speeches to attempt to take the "middle of the road" and capture the other team's offense.

-I am uncomfortable adjudicating anything other than the debating that took place within the round I am assigned. If there is harassment within the round, I hold the appropriate course of action to be stopping the debate and going to tab, where I am happy to argue that the team doing the harassment should be expelled from the tournament and talk to the team's coaches about the debaters facing repercussions. If there is harassment outside the round, talk to me and/or send me an email and we can go to tab and/or try to determine an appropriate course of action.

Final thoughts

-I think debate is no fun when everyone is up-tight and being a little fun and/or silly is a good thing. However, this should never come at the expense of debating well.

-I am probably a better judge for arguments like death good than the rest of this paradigm makes it seem.

-If you feel unsafe during a round for any reason, send me an email.

-I am still paying attention even I am staring off into the distance, especially if I am flowing on my computer.

I am a 2A and qualified to the TOC my senior year. I evaluate most parts of debate as DAs with arguments needing both a link and an impact. I will attempt to make my decision by assigning relative risk to the different portions of the debate. T and theory are obviously not probabilistic so I do not evaluate them as DAs.

I'm new to judging online, so for now try and go a little slower than you might in person. Clarity is often more of an issue when spreading over zoom.

If there are re-highlights in the doc please let me know. I normally standardize everything to green because it is easier to read and don't want to accidentally erase your re-highlight.

I don't like reading through a ton of evidence at the end of around. Thus, I'll only read if I feel a debate (over a specific issue) is close enough that quality will be the deciding issue, or when at least one of the teams is doing comparative evidence analysis. If you identify specific cards that I need to read I will read them and reward you in points. However, if you ask me to read a card that is either bad or not important I will be annoyed and hurt speaks as necessary. This is to encourage you to find the two-four cards on both sides that are the most important and are really worth a read-through.

DAs – I have no weird opinions here. Clean DA execution is awesome and fun to watch and will be rewarded. I think that framing pages are often poorly executed. They can be really helpful tools, but don't mean a lot if you use them as an excuse to not interact with the DA. I also think that people tend to spend much more time on them necessary especially when coupled with aff o/v's that are already too long. Unless the framing page is going to decide my ballot its unlikely you need to spend a ton of time on it.

CPs – Agent CPs are boring but I understand their necessity on the topic. I will reward well-researched cps especially if they're tricky. I think that creative CPs designed to deal with evidence failures identified in 1AC CX are often highly persuasive. Condo means I can kick the CP.

Ks – I am likely to let the aff weigh the adv, if things are a wash or especially close. I also think its probable that util is in fact trutil. I think most perms and link turns are bad and it'd be easier for a k team to beat them than beat an adv. However, simply providing links to the aff is insufficient to prove links to the perm. Most teams are bad at beating the perm, and they shouldn't be. If the aff wins f/w I think the k must not only win that the impact to links o/w the adv but also that those links are uq or that the alt provides sufficient uq. I think that when properly explained the perm double bind is a good argument.

In terms of specific Ks, I'm very solid for cap and security. If you are reading cap like its dedev just read dedev because it will make everything cleaner. I am ok for pomo ks, but don't think novices should read them. I am bad for ontology claims. I'll vote on them but I think they're fatalist, reductionist, and ignore the lived experience of many black folks. As a mixed person, I also find them incredibly confusing. Am I socially dead? Socially some zombie?

K affs - Maybe good for debate - definitely bad for novice debate. For novices, I'll vote for you if you're just destroying them, but I have a low burden for a neg ballot and am likely to give you low speaks. This is an area of debate that I've spent the least amount of time thinking about (thanks maggie for carrying me vs the k aff!) so I don't have strong specific opinions yet.

T - I'm not yet familiar with this topic, and so my ideas about T are far from set in stone. I have a tendency to believe that predictable limits are the best offense but can be persuaded otherwise. Arbitrary limits claims (like subs) are much weaker. Reasonability is an argument about the C/I not about whether or not the aff is reasonably topical. Good T debates should deal with the interaction of competing standards, and not just a comparison of standard. This is similar to the way in which a good DA/Case debate should deal with the ways the DA turns the aff and the ADV solves the DA.

Theory – I'm predisposed to think that condo is good. I'm open to the debate but will find it boring, and won't likely be giving high speaks. I think that silly theory arguments should be dealt with quickly and will find it annoying if you fall into their time trap. When debating tricky adv cps (process cps are what most ppl who lose to them call them) I think that the perm is normally more compelling than reject the CP theory. Tricky Perms coupled with theoretical reasons for why they are good to beat tricky cps are awesome.

Case

Impact calc key for affs to do if y'all want an aff ballot. All of my debate career I have only read soft left affs, but I do understand the literature from all aff types. If you have an aff and it has a structural violence impact with some framing, and another impact of war, disease, Econ collapse, etc. Go for one, not both if the 2ar extends their genocide and war impacts, a big no-no. (this happens a lot too)

K-Affs

I like these affs, breath of fresh air from the basic policy affs from the topic resolution. I would prefer teams to read a plan text and defend some action. (doesn't have to be USFG as an actor) I have judged and voted on identity affs a good amount during the arms sales topic and cjr topic.

DA's

have a clear internal link and link story, how does point A lead to point B. Don't use generic evidence for the link, there has to be a clear point that the AFF. I lean slightly aff on this so the neg needs to do some work to prove the DA. If you run a da PLEASE RUN A CP, with it cause yeah there is a risk but I don't have another way to solve that's on my flow. If you are running a relations da, Econ da, or other one make sure you have recent evidence so the impact is concrete.

t has been very over-limiting on a lot of topics I have debate on, majority of T arguments only make certain big affs topical. breath>depth. I'm pretty neutral on judging this, it comes down to the extensions in the 2nr and the response in the 2ar on how I should write my ballot. ASPEC I'm not a big fan of, if you go for it the 2nr should be just aspec and explain the voter in the round and why fairness and ed are key. CJR specific I have voted on t on this topic and I have voted against it.

Love a good perm/theory debate. Both sides need to do work to prove whether if the cp is competitive/noncompetitive and that it does/doesn't solve the aff w/o linking to the net benefit. impact calc of the nb is key for my ballot.

A good amount of 1st-year rounds I judged were more critical. I'm in the loop on K literature, so you really don't have to explain terms just the world of the alt looks like and why I should pick the neg's fw over the affirmative. these rounds are either really good or really bad. Known to be very messy Only run it if you really understand it.No no generic link cards, have to be specific to the aff. By the 2nr the neg should have a clear story of what the world of the alt is, and why the k matters in this round.

I did Policy Debate for 8 years at Solorio HS in Chicago (2016-2020) and at Dartmouth College (2020-2024).

Debate is a research-based, communicative activity. Arguments that are divorced from external scholarship are not persuasive to me.

Answer arguments in the order presented.

I am at my best in debates where the Affirmative has presented a topical plan and the Negative strategy involves a counterplan and/or disadvantage.

I tend to evaluate impacts based on the relative probability of the internal link chain more than magnitude.

Criticisms are fine, but I generally think Links should be about the plan and/or its justifications. If your speeches sound like they could be about any affirmative, I am unlikely to vote for you.

In Topicality debates (against policy or planless affirmatives) I am more persuaded by arguments about limits than ground.

Basically no patience for debate shenanigans. The answer to "hmm,, is X a debate shenanigan?" is likely "yes." This is especially true of egregious Negative practices of conditionality.

I flow on paper, I am not following along with the speech docs so that I can understand what is happening in the debate in front of me. Please don't make a card doc for me after the debate, I will ask each team after the 2AR to send me the set of cards I need to decide the debate. (ex: "Neg can you send me the DA link cards, Aff can you send me the internal link for Y").

There are adults in the activity that enjoy when cross-examination turns into a heated exchange between the debaters. I do not.

I debated competitively in high school in the 1990s for Maine East. I participated on the national circuit where counterplans and theory were common.

Experience:

I competed in the 90s, helped around for a few years, took a bit of a break, have been back for about 7 years. My teams compete on the national circuit, I help heavily with my teams’ strategies, and am a lab leader at a University of Michigan. In recent years I have helped coach teams that cleared at the TOC, won state titles and consistently debated in late elim rounds at national tournaments. TL/DR--I am familiar with national circuit debate but I do not closely follow college debate so do not assume that I am attuned to the arguments that are currently cutting edge/new.

What this means for you---I lean tech over truth when it comes to execution, but truth controls the direction of tech, and some debate meta-arguments matter a lot less to me.

I am not ideological towards most arguments, I believe debate structurally is a game, but there are benefits to debate outside of it being just a game, give it your best shot and I will try my best to adapt to you.

The only caveat is do not read any arguments that you think would be inappropriate for me to teach in my classroom, if you are worried it might be inappropriate, you should stop yourself right there.

DISADS AND ADVANTAGES
When deciding to vote on disadvantages and affirmative advantages, I look for a combination of good story telling and evidence analysis. Strong teams are teams that frame impact calculations for me in their rebuttals (e.g. how do I decide between preventing a war or promoting human rights?). I should hear from teams how their internal links work and how their evidence and analysis refute indictments from their opponents. Affirmatives should have offense against disads (and Negs have offense against case). It is rare, in my mind, for a solvency argument or "non unique" argument to do enough damage to make the case/disad go away completely, at best, relying only on defensive arguments will diminish impacts and risks, but t is up to the teams to conduct a risk analysis telling me how to weigh risk of one scenario versus another.

TOPICALITY

I will vote on topicality if it is given time (more than 15 seconds in the 2NR) in the debate and the negative team is able to articulate the value of topicality as a debate “rule” and demonstrate that the affirmative has violated a clear and reasonable framework set by the negative. If the affirmative offers a counter interpretation, I will need someone to explain to me why their standards and definitions are best. Providing cases that meet your framework is always a good idea. I find the limits debate to be the crux generally of why I would vote for or against T so if you are neg you 100% should be articulating the limits implications of your interpretation.

KRITIKS
Over the years, I have heard and voted on Kritiks, but I do offer a few honest caveats:

*Please dont read "death good"/nihilism/psychoanalysis in front of me. I mean honestly I will consider it but I know I am biased and I HATE nihilism, psychoanalysis debates. I will try to listen with an open mind but I really don't think these arguments are good for the activity or good for pedagogy--they alienate younger debaters who are learning the game and I don't think that genuine discussions of metaphysics lend themselves to speed reading and "voting" on right/wrong. If you run these I will listen and work actively to be open minded but know you are making an uphill battle for yourself running these. If these are your bread and butter args you should pref me low.

I read newspapers daily so I feel confident in my knowledge around global events. I do not regularly read philosophy or theory papers, there is a chance that I am unfamiliar with your argument or the underlying paradigms. I do believe that Kritik evidence is inherently dense and should be read a tad slower and have accompanying argument overviews in negative block. Impact analysis is vital. What is the role of the ballot? How do I evaluate things like discourse against policy implications (DAs etc)

Also, I’m going to need you to go a tad slower if you are busting out a new kritik, as it does take time to process philosophical writings.

If you are doing something that kritiks the overall debate round framework (like being an Aff who doesnt have a plan text), make sure you explain to me the purpose of your framework and why it is competitively fair and educationally valuable.

COUNTERPLANS
I am generally a fan of CPs as a neg strategy. I will vote for counterplans but I am open to theory arguments from the affirmative (PICs bad etc). Counterplans are most persuasive to me when the negative is able to clearly explain the net benifts and how (if at all) the counterplan captures affirmative solvency. For permutations to be convincing offense against CPs, Affs should explain how permutation works and what voting for perm means (does the DA go away, do I automatically vote against neg etc?)

Random

Tag team is fine as long as you don’t start taking over cross-ex and dominating. You are part of a 2 person team for a reason.

Speed is ok as long as you are clear. If you have a ton of analytics in a row or are explaining a new/dense theory, you may want to slow down a little since processing time for flowing analytics or kritkits is a little slower than me just flowing the text of your evidence.

I listen to cross ex. I think teams come up with a lot of good arguments during this time. If you come up with an argument in cross ex-add it to the flow in your speech.
