I'm a sophomore and I've done paril for 2 years and pufo for a year. I flow but I can't follow K debate well, so I prefer debates on substance. I'll vote off of theory, tricks, framework debate, and "troll cases". If you’re going to be spreading please give me a speech doc because If it gets too fast I can’t flow. For parli, please don’t nag about “no cards” because parli isn’t supposed to have them. I prefer purely analytic arguments in parli.

I was a competitor in Importmu, Extemp, and Congressional Debate for my last two years of high school; I qualified to States twice and to Nats, and semi/final-ed at multiple national tournaments.

When judging debates, I appreciate careful and reasonably-paced speaking, good evidence, and knowledge of your sources. Please be honest with your evidence and remember that your source does matter. I dislike repetitive arguments in round, and systematic analysis is appreciated- guide me through, don't assume I know. Warrants and the big picture are what I'm listening for. Please be civil and courteous, don't hog crossfire, and be mindful if that you don't speak clearly but quickly, I'm lost. Give me a reason to vote for you - your final focus should write my RFD for me.

Background:

I'm a first year student at Berkeley and a former parli and public forum debater that has debated at both lay and circuit tournaments.

Preferences:

I consider myself to be tech over truth and put a strong emphasis on weighing and impact calculus. Remember to extend full arguments and make sure that anything in final focus is brought up in summary. Use summary and final focus as a time to strategically emphasize the most important voter issues instead of tackling the entirety of the debate. Frontlining in rebuttal is not a necessity for me, but if you have time go for it. Please keep the debate clean and respectful especially with regards to rule violations.

Speaking:

Speaking is clearly an important part of debate, however I will never use it to add or detract from my final decision. Higher points will be given to those who speak clearly, effectively organize their speeches, and strategically use crossfire. I'm okay with fast speaking, but please no spreading.

Novice/Middle School:

Did not debate the Catalonia topic, but have judged practice rounds for it, so any links must be thoroughly backed up and explained.

Off-time roadmaps are okay, just confirm with your opponents that they're okay with them too.

I've debated for 3 years at CCA, so:

- Yes, I will be flowing all of your speeches. No, I will not flow crossfire, so if anything important happens in crossfire, just bring it up in your next speech.

- I can handle speed, so if you want to speak quickly, go for it.

- SIGNPOST -- this is the surefire way to know that I will have counted your argument in that speech.

- I will judge the round based on whatever framework both teams agree on, so be sure to extend arguments and impacts (AND WEIGH THEM) in both Summary and Final Focus. If the framework is not agreed on, prove you win under both. I should not have to go back and determine what the most important points in the round are -- I expect you to weigh them for me.

- Anything said in Final Focus needs to have been brought up in Summary.

- If you are being unclear, I will put my pen down to signal that I am no longer flowing your arguments -- take that as a cue to clarify.

- Ultimately, treat me like a flay judge. It will mostly be tech over truth unless the argument is very clearly untrue.

- If you are rude during the round, expect very low speaks from me, even though I may give you the win. That being said, if you are being downright abusive, I will drop you.

In your debate, make no assumptions of prior knowledge of subject area. Explain your arguments and evidence clearly. More contentions does not mean better contentions, make me understand your definitions, weighing mechanism and why your speeches show you win the debate. It is very important that I understand how your arguments relate to and address the resolution.

Be respectful of your opponents especially while rebutting their arguments.

Please do not speak too quickly or I will have to disregard information that I missed. I take notes, so make sure to emphasize what you really want me to hear.
