I have been coaching and judging Public Forum debate for three years now. My preferences are as follows:

Timing:

I'm a stickler for time. I do not allow off-time road maps. Everything you say needs to be in your time. You need to ensure that you are timing yourself, your team mates, and your opponents. If any member goes beyond time (except for closing statements -- "and for this reason, you must ballot aff" and etc.) I consider this a failing in timing for all members, and can affect speaker points. For prep time, tell me what you've used after you've used it. Do not tell me what you intend to use. For a cross fire, if you ask a question at the end of the time, you will not receive an answer.

Argumentation:

I do flow each contention for each round. Each contention should be extended through the summary speech. Failure to extend an argument will be considered conceded to your opponent. If your opponent notices your failure to extend a contention, and also mentions it, that can sink your debate for me. The exception to this is your final focus. Your final focus needs to be exactly as it is titled -- focused. You need to consider where your single strongest contention is and explain why you win on that basis. In the process, be sure to bring back your evidence and reasoning to support your impacts for that contention. Essentially, give me your voters only.

Evidence:

I'm not a stickler for evidence, as some judges are. When prompted for evidence or a source, you should be able to provide it quickly. I hate when a debate is mired with searching through cards to find particular quotations or links. If you cannot quickly find a source, I will assume it does not exist. You should not ask for evidence unless: 1. You know your opponent is making unsubstantiated claims, 2. Your opponent has evidence directly contrasting your own evidence and claim, or 3. You believe your opponent is misrepresenting or falsifying evidence. In any of these cases, as you ask for the evidence, be clear to provide your reasoning. If you believe the evidence is false or misrepresented, I will look at it as well. Otherwise, I never ask for evidence.

Crossfires:

I don't generally note or flow crossfires unless an important development or concession is made. Respect during a crossfire is paramount. I understand and support passionate exchanges, but not at the expense of civility and respect for your opponents.

Speaking:

I can understand and follow spreading, but I generally discourage it. I think your ability to vary your tone, adding vocal emphasis to your important points, and to sound interested and passionate in your topic, are far more important than loading your speech with the most evidence possible. I award points on this basis. I have no preferences for sitting or standing at any point in a debate, and I don't care at whom you look during speeches or crossfires.

Determining Winners:

As stated, I judge each contention independently. I will award a "point" to the side who best argues each contention for each case. At the end of the round, the win will go to the side with the most points (that is, the better arguments for the greatest number of individual contentions). I don't generally weigh frameworks unless both teams provide and debate frameworks, or there is a tie in points and the framework affects the weight/scope of the arguments.

First time judging. 

Tech vs. Truth:

I am pretty much tech over truth, so the flow is what matters most in the round. In the end, I will pretty much evaluate the debate how you tell me to. 

Evidence:

I will call for evidence (if needed) after the round, especially if it is a close round. 

Speed:

Speed is fine by me. Just be clear. 

Arguments:

I am pretty much okay with you running anything you want, as long as it is topical and not offensive in any way.  

Cross:

I will listen and pay attention to it. I do not flow cross. If you say something in cross that you think is useful, then bring it up in your speeches. Do not go out of your way to be rude.  

Summary and Final:

You can only extend from what was said in summary.

Weighing:

Please weigh the round for me. If there is no weighing done, I will have to weigh arguments myself, which I do not want to do. If you want the round to be evaluated in a certain way, I need to hear it in a speech.

Hello! I am a lay judge but here are some points that teams should consider prior to round

1. I am a novice judge so teams should try not to speak fast. I'm ok with any speed as long as I understand you

2. Do not be rude or say anything derogatory otherwise, I will vote you down. Please be professional as if you are giving a presentation in front of a panel of judges. 

3. I have no experience in debate in general but I did do speech when I was younger and have a daughter who is a PF varsity debater, so I understand how PF works. 

4. I am not heavy on flowing but I will note down as much as I can and will take note on important issues brought up in round. 

5. This is the first time I am judging, but I do know the topic pretty well, so do not makeup evidence and expect to get away with it.  

This is my third year judging LD.

-I will listen intently but do not like spreading. If I cannot understand you due to speed or lack of enunciation, you will lose out. I cannot judge on what I do not hear.

-Your framework is important. You need to clearly identify your value, value criterion, and contentions.

-I reserve the right to view any cards you list as evidence.

-Be respectful. This is a professional debate.

-I prefer standard LD without any of the games, critiques, debating the topic, etc.

Parent judge. Have been judging for 3+ years.

Paradigm:

I favor logical, well articulated and; persuasive delivery over speed and overly passionate delivery.

Evidence - if a card is weak, out of context or too good to be true, call it out and challenge it. If you leave it uncontested, you are missing an opportunity.

Crossfire - questions/challenges left answered/uncontested counts in the opponents favor.

Delivery:

No personal attacks, no yelling. Be assertive but not aggressive.

Speak clearly and persuasively. Content is more important than speed.

Respect time. When time is up, don't pile on 50 words to make a point. These will be discarded.

I debated PF all through high school, coached all through college, and am now coaching at Walt Whitman High School in Maryland. My role in the round is to interpret the world you aim to create, and to that end you should tell me explicitly what it is you are trying to do. I stick to the flow as well as I can.

common question answers:

1. Anything that needs to be on the ballot, needs to be in Final Focus, and anything in final needs to be in summary.

2. The first speaking team should be predicting the offense in first summary that needs to be responded to, and putting defense on it then. This ALSO means that the second speaking team has to frontline in the rebuttal. Any arguments/defense that are not in the First Summary are dropped, and any arguments that are not frontlined in the second rebuttal are dropped.

3. Summary to Final Focus consistency is key, especially in terms of the relevance of arguments, if something is going to be a huge deal, it should be so in both speeches. You're better off using your new 3 minute summary to make your link and impact extensions cleaner than you are packing it full of args.

4. I will call for cards that I think are important, and I will throw them out if they are bad or misrepresented, regardless of if they are challenged in the round. sometimes when two arguments are clashing with little to no analysis, this is the only way to settle it.

As a note, I am pretty hard on evidence, especially as sharing docs is becoming more popular. If you are making an argument, and the evidence is explicitly making a different argument, I won't be able to flow your arg.

Speed is fine, but spreading isn't. I'll evaluate critical arguments if they have a solid link, but they have to link to the topic y'all, so they basically have to be a critical disad.

I evaluate theory if it's needed, but I'm really skeptical of how often that is.
