I’m as much of a blank slate as I possibly be can. There’s no arguments that will be an automatic loss if you go for them, that being said, if your 2nr is going to be timecube I would find someone else to pref.
Aff Questions
K affs/Project Teams- I like these debates. I've judged enough of these debates at this point that I'm pretty well versed in the lit
Neg Positions
T- I think T is an underrated strat that should be gone for more. By that, I mean that if you have some specific T shell or the aff is totally not Economic Engagement then read that T. The QPQ debate is kind of being a wash at this point to be honest
DA- I like the politics disad, I read it a lot when I debated. No issues w/da's here
CP- I also like a good counterplan debate. I think specificity >generic everytime.
Theory- I have a hard time believing that 2 K’s are abusive in a world where they are conditional, and the neg just needs some justification on why they get to test the aff. Other theory arguments just need to be well explained.
Kritiks- This is the fun part. I like the K. I read the K quite often. I like to judge a well-explained K debate. I will listen to your Spanos, D&G, or whatever. It needs to be well explained. I repeat this because it’s important. I haven’t read every K in the world, which means I might not know what you are reading. I just need you to tell me what the alt does and why the aff is bad. Please don’t make the debate buzz words. I don’t care about rhizomatic structures of the aff, tell me why those structures suck Framework- Just defend it. If you read it against a K aff, have an answer to “Framework is racist:” I'm becoming less and less persuaded that the aff has to roleplay as the USFG but if you have a super FW block or just feel like you're really good at it go for it.
Weird Stuff: I'm not a fan of these trolling args, and will probably dock speaks if you read them. Calling shotgun for the ballot, adding words to the 1AC, timecube, consult x-men, etc. are not arguments. They are time sucks that get mirrored by other teams and makes debate terrible. I'd rather you read something generic than waste my time.
Speaker Points:
I’m not a points hack. I’ll say clear and then I stop flowing. How you conduct yourself in CX is important. If you're rude and needlessly hurtful to your opponents, I’ll dock speaks. This is an amazing activity because of all the experiences you get, which means I think that respect goes along way. Be clear, be courteous and your speaks will reflect that. That being said I am hard of hearing, I have bolded this because it means you have to be louder than usual and conscious of outside noises, mumbling and getting really quiet during cards does not work or me, please just be accommodating
I currently debate NPDA and IPDA at the University of North Texas, and have done so for four years.
I debated Policy debate and Congress at Harker Heights High School for two years.
I am fine with anything and you need to tell me how to weigh each argument in the round, without an explicit weighing mechanism I default to net benefits.
K - If you run a K I want to know the specific role of the ballot and why the alt will solve for the problems manifested within the K. If the alt is performative I need to understand the proximal or in round impacts clearly. I enjoy hearing well warranted criticisms with good evidence, and do believe they have an importance place in debate.
T - I am not a big fan of topicality but will vote for it if the argument is well warranted. Do not make T arguments just to make them, I often default to reasonability.
DA - The links for disadvantages need to be well explained, and if you argue that extinction happens because of something don't just think I presume you are correct, the link story needs to be clear. I think DAs to CPs and Ks are useful and important in round.
CP - I need a flushed out method on why the Net Benefit of the CP should outweigh the case.
Case - I find on case really important, and needs to be stressed on both the aff and the neg. Case specific impacts on either side can easily sway a round for me.
Speed - I am fine with speed, however if I can't understand you or your opponents can't understand you there is a huge problem. If you are asked to slow or clear - do it. Otherwise, I will dock your speaker points hard and don't flow arguments I didn't hear.
Finally, be inclusive - exclusivity and any kind of racism, sexism, ableism or trans exclusion is not cool and will definitely lead to issues with the final decision for you.

I work very hard in debates. I concentrate. I teach courses about argumentation and rhetoric at both grad and undergrad level. This greatly influences my thinking in debates. I do not feel that debates are necessarily won by ushering forth the truth. Debates are won by doing the best communicating in an argumentatively competitive setting. I am not a slow thinker, However, I do encounter several debates where speakers are so unclear that I cannot follow critical points in the debate. This happens at the peril of those speaking. I do not think I am a truth machine whom you submit evidence to and ask me to find out which side is correct. I am a critic of argument and as such try to listen and compare arguments as the debate is going on.
I am not a fan of voting on theory, however, I'll do it if you are behind or if its very in-round. Predispositions: counterplans have to be a reason to reject the Aff. Plan- Inclusive Counterplans are ok, Dispositional counterplans are OK. I think the Aff has a small burden that they must overcome in terms of presumption, then the Neg must usher forth arguments in order to disprove the affirmative.
I try to work hard to make good decisions. I'll only read cards that I can understand the first time that they are presented. I try as much as possible to let the debaters characterize their and each other's arguments. I prefer to hear people comparing warrants as opposed to a list of names of authors. I do believe the name of the game is persuasion and eloquence. The qualifications debate is a lost art and I do think it is
important. You have to be fair and I really prefer it if people are nice.

I try to be as objective as possible, with the above predisposition included. In general, I prefer arguments which contain good reasons and strategies which make logical sense. I am less likely to be tricked by the use of big words and I often like to hear justifications.
I am not a person who thinks policy debate is always right. The need to constantly defend the burden of rejoinder has left me battle-weary after these many years. Perhaps the second speech, the rebuttal, has actually encouraged debaters to be lackadaisical and lazy in first speeches and encourages strategies based on bait and switch and sandbagging the best arguments until later. I tire of such things. The persuasive case should be made at the first available opportunity, and this has been said for over two thousand years. I have had the good fortune of working with a great many good debaters, including two top speakers at the National Debate Tournament. In each case, I found their skill and proficiency to exceed any particular piece of evidence or argument and I think that has formed my standard for what I consider good debate.

Speaker Points
I attempted to resist the point inflation that seems to happen everywhere these days, but I decided that was not fair to the teams/debaters that performed impressively in front of me.
27.7 to 28.2 - Average
28.3 to 28.6 - Good job
28.7 to 29.2 - Well above average
29.3 to 29.7 - Great job/ impressive job
29.8 to 29.9 - Outstanding performance, better than I have seen in a long time. Zero mistakes and you excelled in every facet of the debate.
30 - I have not given a 30 in years and years, true perfection.
I am willing to listen to most arguments. There are very few debates where one team wins all of the arguments so each of you must identify what you are winning and make the necessary comparisons between your arguments and the other team's arguments/positions. Speed is not a problem although clarity is essential. If I think that you are unclear I will say clearer and if you don't clear up I will assign speaker points accordingly. Try to be nice to each other and enjoy yourself. Good cross-examinations are enjoyable and typically illuminates particular arguments that are relevant throughout the debate. Please, don't steal prep time. I do not consider e-mailing evidence as part of your prep time nonetheless use e-mailing time efficiently.
I enjoy substantive debates as well as debates of a critical tint. If you run a critical affirmative you should still be able to demonstrate that you are Topical/predictable. I hold Topicality debates to a high standard so please be aware that you need to isolate well-developed reasons as to why you should win the debate (ground, education, predictability, fairness, etc.). If you are engaged in a substantive debate, then well-developed impact comparisons are essential (things like magnitude, time frame, probability, etc.). Also, identifying solvency deficits on counter-plans is typically very important.
Theory debates need to be well developed including numerous reasons a particular argument/position is illegitimate. I have judged many debates where the 2NR or 2AR are filled with new reasons an argument is illegitimate. I will do my best to protect teams from new arguments, however, you can further insulate yourself from this risk by identifying the arguments extended/dropped in the 1AR or Negative Bloc.

A few clarifications... As long as you are clear you can debate at any pace you choose. Any style is fine, although if you are both advancing different approaches then it is incumbent upon each of you to compare and contrast the two approaches and demonstrate why I should prioritize/default to your approach. If you only read cards without some explanation and application, do not expect me to read your evidence and apply the arguments in the evidence for you. Be nice to each other. I pay attention during cx. I will not say clearer so that I don't influence or bother the other judge. If you are unclear, you can look at me and you will be able to see that there is an issue. I might not have my pen in my hand or look annoyed. I keep a comprehensive flow and my flow will play a key role in my decision. With that being said, being the fastest in the round in no way means that you will win my ballot. Concise well explained arguments will surely impact the way I resolve who wins, an argument advanced in one place on the flow can surely apply to other arguments, however the debater should at least reference where those arguments are relevant. I am not going to dictate the way in which you debate. I hope this will serve as a guide for the type of arguments and presentation related issues that I tend to hear and vote on. I competed in LD in the early 1990's and was somewhat successful. From 1995 until present I have primarily coached policy debate and judged CX rounds, but please don't assume that I prefer policy based arguments or prefer/accept CX presentation styles. I expect to hear clearly every single word you say during speeches. This does not mean that you have to go slow but it does mean incomprehensibility is unacceptable. If you are unclear I will reduce your speaker points accordingly. Going faster is fine, but remember this is LD Debate.
Despite coaching and judging policy debate the majority of time every year I still judge 50+ LD rounds and 30+ extemp. rounds. I have judged 35+ LD rounds on the 2022 spring UIL LD Topic so I am very familiar with the arguments and positions related to the topic.
I am very comfortable judging and evaluating value/criteria focused debates. I have also judged many LD rounds that are more focused on evidence and impacts in the round including arguments such as DA's/CP's/K's. I am not here to dictate how you choose to debate, but it is very important that each of you compare and contrast the arguments you are advancing and the related arguments that your opponent is advancing. It is important that each of you respond to your opponents arguments as well as extend your own positions. If someone drops an argument it does not mean you have won debate. If an argument is dropped then you still need to extend the conceded argument and elucidate why that argument/position means you should win the round. In most debates both sides will be ahead on different arguments and it is your responsibility to explain why the arguments you are ahead on come first/turns/disproves/outweighs the argument(s) your opponent is ahead on or extending. Please be nice to each other. Flowing is very important so that you ensure you understand your opponents arguments and organizationally see where and in what order arguments occur or are presented. Flowing will ensure that you don't drop arguments or forget where you have made your own arguments. I do for the most part evaluate arguments from the perspective that tech comes before truth (dropped arguments are true arguments), however in LD that is not always true. It is possible that your arguments might outweigh or come before the dropped argument or that you can articulate why arguments on other parts of the flow answer the conceded argument. I pay attention to cross-examinations so please take them seriously. CONGRATULATIONS for making it to state!!! Each of you should be proud of yourselves! Please, be nice in debates and treat everyone with respect just as I promise to be nice to each of you and do my absolute best to be predictable and fair in my decision making. GOOD LUCK!
I have experience judging a wide range of arguments. I have found the following qualities more important than any of the particular content of arguments:
- completeness of argument
- meaningul engagment with opponents arguments and questions and responses in cross-examination
- clarity
- creativity
- knowledge about the issues being debated
- organization
Those qualities provide the major criteria for my speaker points. I also find myself rewarding/considering:
- degree of difficulty
- general affect
I consider myself an active participant in the debates. I listen and flow intently and think thoroughly about whats happening in the debate. I take post rounds pretty seriously and view my role as a temporary coach, so please don't be hesitant with questions (whether you agree or disagree with the decision) I only ask that I am given time to fully explain my decision before interjecting.
General CX/LD/PFD Preferences:
Professionalism and civility are required and weigh heavily in speakerpoints
Standing CX/Crossfire; seated Grand Crossfire; look at judge in CX/Crossfire
Don't use open CX/Crossfire as a crutch (I will dock speaks if it's clear one partner is doing all the heavy lifting)
I may critique after round, but only if both teams request. If I do critique, I will generally not disclose and I will keep it brief as I write a lot on the ballot for the benefit of your coach.
My view on speed (spreading) is that I will flow it, but a speaker should not sacrifice articulation for speed. If articulation is an issue, please slow down as I have some nerve deafness in my left ear, so you must be clear. However, PFD is an event where spreading is highly discouraged.
I'm a rule follower, so if there is a tournament prohibition on open CX, email chains, prompting, etc., don't do it!
CX Argument Preferences:
I most want to see in a debate round a few, well developed, substantive arguments
I will consider and vote on:
- Disadvantages almost always (i.e., if properly weighed against Aff advantages/turns)
- Counterplans almost always (however, must show solvency for Aff harms and not link to any DAs/other offense against Aff)
- Kritiks rarely (i.e., if properly weighed; compare worlds). Alt needs to compete. "Reject" isn't sufficient.
- Conditionality arguments sometimes (e.g., unless team offering argument argues otherwise, I will assume an unconditional status on all augments offered)
- Theory sometimes (particularly if there is clear evidence of in-round abuse such as over-limiting topic, denying fair ground, etc.)
- Topicality sometimes (e.g., if clear in-round abuse; over-limiting topic)
- Inherency sometimes (i.e., if plan is already in status quo, then no reason to vote for Aff)
- Solvency/Workability almost always (i.e., a plan that doesn't work, doesn't solve for status quo harms/claim advantages and thus doesn't provide a net benefit)
LD Argument Preferences:
If you run policy/critical arguments, I tend to vote as a policy-maker (see CX paradigm above). Traditional Value/Criterion arguments are also fine by me in LD.
I most want to see in a debate round a few, well developed, substantive arguments.
Empirical examples are as important, if not more important, than reading "unique", esoteric cards.
PFD Argument Preferences:
While I am a coach, this event was designed to be accessible for "lay" judges, so please adapt accordingly.
Empirical examples are very useful and don't necessarily require a source, if general knowledge.
While framework is not essential, it is often helpful in close rounds.
Congressional Debate Argument Preferences:
Speeches:
Structure and content are both essential. In each speech, there should be a clear intro with statement of position on resolution and preview of main points. Main points should be supported by the type of evidence you would expect a member of Congress to rely upon for a speech before the House/Senate. Responses to fellow members and a discussion of how the legislation would impact one's "constituents" are part of the "debate" aspect of this event. Walking transitions between points and when answering questions is expected.
Parliamentary Procedure and PO duties:
Efficiency, use of proper voting procedures and correct motions to move along debate are an obligation of ALL members of the chamber and should not have to be repeatedly prompted by the PO. The PO's primary duties are to keep speech time and recognize speakers/questioners based on a strict, impartial adherence to precedence/recency. Do not run for PO if you do not feel prepared to execute these duties. Serving as PO is never a guarantee of breaking; a PO's performance is weighed against the PO expectations outlined above.

I am a master's student in my final semester at the University of North Texas, studying rhetoric and performance. I will always try to be a thoughtful and objective judge, and keep an open mind to all arguments. A couple things that are important to me:
- Try to be clear in your speaking. I don't want to have to read through all of your evidence at the end of the round to try to figure our what your argument was. By clarity I mean both clear diction in addition to clearly explaining the warrants of your arguments and how they function in the round.
- Have direct clash and on point refutation. I was once in a debate round where neither team engaged the other, and the aff ended up winning, "because they went first." I don't want to be forced to make a decision like this, so pay attention to what the other team says, and indicate how your arguments interact and why your points are more important.
- Fully utilize impact comparison. You should be able to clearly articulate to me by the end of the round why you should win.
- I am very open to kritiks and performance affs. I think that these debates are interesting if they are done well and offer a unique type of education on the topic. That being said, I think that topical education is important to the activity, so you should be able to defend why your performance or kritik is relevant to the topic area.
