Technology Tips for Online Debating

Connection Tips

  • If you can, plug your computer in to your home’s router with an Ethernet connection.

  • If you are using wireless, locate as close as you reasonably can to the router.

  • If you have a bad connection, minimize the amount of traffic.

    •  Ask people in your home not to stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

    • Adjust your video quality downward.

Tech Time

  • In addition to prep time, each team will have 5 minutes of tech time per round to address technology issues.

Cameras and Microphones

  • Cameras should be left on at all times. This includes specifically the judge and both teams of competitors.

  • Microphones should be muted if you are not speaking. The question periods (CX) should be the only time when both teams are unmuted.

  • If background noise is an issue, make sure your mouth is close the microphone. Remember to project in to the microphone.
  • If any issues arise mid round, open the chat window to communicate the issues to the judge and other team. Move to address and fix the problem as quickly as possible. Contact Tabroom for help as needed.
