Q: If a student competes for the first time at this tournament, will that "burn" their novice status for next year?

A: No. Per SDIVSL rules, a novice is defined as "A person who has competed in not more than two invitational tournaments that occur after the California State Finals". 

Q: If a student competes with a new piece for the first time, will that "burn" the piece for next year?

A: No. The rule for pieces is in line with the rule for Novice status.
