ONLINE SPEECH SPECIFIC INFORMATION

RECORDED VIDEO PROCEDURE

All recordings must begin with the verbal introduction: “Hello, my name is [First Name, Last Name], my code is [code number], and this is a(n) [category name*] performance for the HSL [Month] Speech Tournament.” This will serve as proof that your recording is intended for competition in this tournament only. If the introductory phrase is not present, your video will not be scored by judges. DO NOT STATE YOUR SCHOOL’S NAME.

*In IS/USX/IX, students should include the round for which the video was created.

The recorded video must be uploaded to YouTube and set as 'unlisted.’ The video must be titled using the format ‘Event - Student Code - First Name Last Name.’ (i.e. DI-A04-CarolHalbur)

            * In IS/USX/IX  ‘Event – Round #, Student Code, FirstName Last Name.’

               (i.e. IS2.W04.Carol.Halbur)

All recorded videos must meet the following guidelines:

·       Recordings are to be made from a single camera in a fixed position and the recording device was not operated by another person.

·       Editing of recordings is not permitted and there should be no breaks in recording.

·       Other individuals may be present while filming, but audience interaction (e.g., laughing, applause, etc.) must not be included in the performance.

·       Contestants in Duo Interpretation are not to perform in the same room. If you are looking for ways to make this possible, the NSDA put together a video (https://www.speechanddebate.org/duo-interp-split-screen-demo-nats-2020/) for their 2020 National tournament, which would meet the criteria.

With the exception of draw categories (i.e., IS, USX, IX), all rounds will be judged using a single video submission throughout the tournament.

 PREPARED EVENTS

Competitors in prepared speech events (i.e., ST, POI, HI, DI, DUO, OO, INF) must upload their videos to YouTube, include the link to their video on the Google Form, and send their coaches the link, who will upload the video to TabRoom.

 IMPROMPTU AND EXTEMP RULES

Topics will be released to coaches Tabroom by 2 pm the Wednesday before the tournament. Because there will be three rounds and a final round, competitors will create four videos on separate topics. Competitors will be given up to six topics per round and be asked to select and create a speech on one topic for each round.

For impromptu speaking, preparation time for each topic is limited to 5 minutes. For extemporaneous speaking, preparation time for each topic is limited to 30 minutes. The speech uploaded in these events must be the competitors first and only attempt. The preparation must be supervised by a coach. Additionally, the speech must be created by the competitor without the help or consultation of anyone else.
