AWARDS CEREMONY, 2020 SAINT GEORGE'S INVITATIONAL

First of all, thanks so much to all of you for attending the Saint George’s Invitational.  It’s been a strange year, but we pulled it off!  Thanks also to all of the parents, coaches, and judges who made this possible.  Special thanks to Sam Normington, who once again ran a terrific—and remote—tabroom.

Normally, we’d obviously gather together for an awards ceremony, but for me—and I could be alone, here, but I doubt it—the scattered applause and awkward silences of a Zoom Ceremony just don’t have the same effect as the real thing.  I think we can live without it.  Yesterday I judged a Zoom round and I was a little bummed that we weren’t all in the same place, but then again the debaters looked happy enough in their kitchens and living rooms, and there was a kind of hominess to it that I liked.  So, I’m going to roll with it and present awards in this form.  If your name is on this list, please rest assured that it’s a genuine accomplishment.  Even for a tournament of this size, the rounds here are traditionally incredibly competitive ones, and we’ve managed another impressive judging pool this year.  If you’ve won a speaker award or advanced into out rounds, that is a serious matter.  Congratulations are in order!
