ND Parliamentary Debate Warm Up

2017 — San Jose, CA/US

Notre Dame High School is pleased to invite you to the Parliamentary Debate Warm Up tournament on September 16-17th 2017!  This tournament is open to Varsity and Novice students in hopes of preparing for a rigorous tournament season!  The tournament will feature 5 rounds of debate for Novice and 5 rounds of preliminary debate with a generous break to Octos for Varsity, depending on entries.

About the Tournament:

Schools may initially register 4 teams per division, additional school entries will be waitlisted and can be added at tournament director discretion. The maximum capacity of the tournament in both divisions is 75 teams.  Students do not need to dress formally-this is a fun tournament, so casual dress is encouraged!  Topics will be announced 20 minutes before each round in the student area/prep room for Open and 30 minutes before for Novice, and students may use the internet, pre-prepared briefs, downloaded or paper articles to formulate arguments.  Team prep is allowed, but not coach prep.  Debates for varsity will utilize the 7-7-7-7-5-5 format of CHSSA structure. Novice will use a shortened format of 5-5-5-5-3-3. Topics will be drawn from current events and topics of current relevant interest. THERE WILL BE NO TOPIC AREAS FOR THIS TOURNAMENT. Awards will be given to finalists and champions in the Open division and undefeated novices, as well as to top speakers in each division.

 Entries/Divisions/Judging:

Novice are students who have not competed in competitive debate, not just students who have never done Parli.  The division might be collapsed if not enough entries warrant a separate division.

Varsity students may judge any novice rounds.  Yes, you can use your older students to judge!  Free NFL points for all!  Please note, we will not be letting varsity students judge varsity rounds this year. Therefore, varsity student judges will only cover novice entries.

Please enter 1 judge per 2 entries or fraction thereof.  The more judges the better, and since you may use varsity students to judge, my goal is for there to be no shortage of judges so this tournament can run as efficiently as possible. All varsity judges will be required to judge one round past where their team drops. That means, we are requiring that ALL varsity judges be present to judge the first elim on Sunday. If you have varsity students who can judge rounds beyond your school's commitment, please let us know and we will add them to the judging pool for novice.

*TBA/No Name Entries must have names before 9/11 or they will be cleared in favor of named WL entries*

Cost:

The cost for registration is 30.00/team for Novice and 45.00/team for Open.  There is no school fee.

Students may bring their own lunch, or they may purchase a lunch on campus.  There are also several places off campus to purchase food. Food for chaperones will be provided at no cost.
