Dear Middle School Speech Team Coach,

The Rowan County Senior High School Speech Team and Boosters are pleased to invite you to the first ever Harlen Hamm Tournament for Middle Schools, which will take place on January 14, 2017 at Rowan County Senior High School in Morehead, KY! We have had six years of providing an excellent tournament experience in the senior division, so it is our promise to provide an excellent tournament in the junior division as well!

DEADLINES

Add/drop entries without penalty until Wednesday, January 11 at 5:00pm. A $5 drop/add fee on top of the registration fee will apply after this date.

Drop/change names yourself online until Friday, January 13 at noon. After this date, each team will be allowed three free substitutions until onsite registration. Each substitution will cost $5 after the first three. Any substitution made after onsite registration will cost $5 each, regardless of how many substitutions have been previously made.

EVENTS AND ENTRIES

All 12 KHSSL-sanctioned junior speech events will be offered, including Broadcast, Declamation, Duo Acting, Extemp, HI/DI, Impromptu, Improv Duo, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Solo Acting, and Storytelling.

Single events will cost $5 each and partnered events will cost $10. Teams my enter as many students in each event as they wish, but only the top three in each event will count towards a team's sweepstakes total. Students not entered in Extemp are limited to four events and students who are competiing in Extemp are limited to three events. COACHES, TAKE NOTE: Quadruple/triple-enter students at your own risk! Rounds will not be held beyond the allotted time for students who are late due to being quadruple or triple-entered and they will be disqualified from any event they do not make it to. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

JUDGES

Teams must bring one judge for every six speech entries, or fraction thereof. Each missing judge will cost $30. 11th and 12th grade students on the RCSHS team will serve as judges.

7:00-8:00 – Registration

8:00-8:30 – Extemp Draw/Judge Meeting

8:30-10:00 – Round 1

10:00-10:30 – Extemp Draw

10:30-12:00 – Round 2

12:00-1:30 - Extemp/Broadcast Draw

1:30-3:00 – Round 3

3:30-4:00 – Extemp/Broadcast Draw

4:00-5:30 – Finals

6:00 – Awards

FOOD

A hospitality room will be provided for all adults. Competitors will have a concession area in the cafeteria. Please make sure students know to bring bills no larger than $20 to use for concessions. The smaller the bill, the better!

AWARDS

The top six in each event will receive medals. The “next out” in each event will receive a certificate. The top six students in individual sweepstakes (quadrathon) will receive trophies. The top three schools in overall sweepstakes points will receive trophies.

Rowan County Senior High’s campus is located at 499 Viking Drive, Morehead, KY 40351. Morehead is situated on I-64, roughly one hour east of Lexington. For more detailed directions, you may contact Ryan Brown.

Please make checks payable to “RCSHS Speech Boosters.” If you are not able to make a check payable to a booster club, then you can make your check payable to “RCSHS.” Checks and cash only, no purchase orders, please.
