Gotham Scrimmage

2016 — NY/US

The New School will be hosting a small, primarily novice Scimmage in January aimed at regional programs and debaters with limited Fall debate expeience. As this was a last minute addition to supplement traditional events not happening in the Northeast this season, we do not have confirmation of room numbers at the moment to guanratee meeting the CEDA criteria of a tournament.  If we secure the necessary rooms, we will be able to expand the tournament to a collapsed Open/JV division as well and more entries in novice.  We will accept experienced, open debaters who are in their 3rd or 4th year of college debate as judges for this event and may consider a "judging" workshop in the schedule if their are sufficient student/first year judge numbers.

Entries will open online 1/11 with an update on schedule/size/rooms.

Schools that did not compete in Fall 2015, or had limited competitive opportunity, will be given registration peference.  Additional entries will be allowed as space permits.  New School students will be eligible to compete and receive speaker awards, but not qualify for elims.

Fees: UPDATE - we will have no fees for this event.

Location: The New School is located in the West Village of NYC.  Breakfast prior to 9AM will be at the University Center at 63 5th Avenue at the corner of 13th Street.  Most rounds will be in the D building on East 16th Street between 5th Ave and Union Square.

Parking:  A list of street and lot parking will be povided.  Because parking may be an additional cost for some programs, we have reduced registration fees significantly below the average.

Hotel: As many programs attending this event are local, we have not secured a hotel block.  However; January/February are the lowest rates for hotels in the NYC area.  Hotels in New Jesey near Newark Airport will be cheapest and still close (Holland Tunnel), or there are several hotels close the Holland Tunnel itself.  The Washington Square Hotel is walking distance, though expensive.  Use zip codes 10011 or 10003 for zip code based searches of hotels in Manhattan.

Schedule: 2 day, Sat to Sunday. Breakfast at 7am, Round 1 will begin at 9:15AM on Satuday.  Schedule will be updated once rooms are confirmed for entry limits. Tentatively it is scheduled for 4 rounds on Saturday and 2 additional prelim Sunday, and then elims.  However; depending on the actual attendance of the tournament we may switch one prelim on Saturday for a novice teach-in event.

Resolution:  It's the Northeast ... so the starting point is the 2015-2016 CEDA Military Presence topic, but we operate by what can best be described as pirate rules up here, so consider the resolution more of a guideline in some cases.

The CEDA policies on sexual harassment and non-discrimination are NOT just guidelines, and will be upheld by the tournament, including additional New York State, NYC, and New School protections.

For accessibility concerns please contact Vik through the options above.  Additional accessibility and facility information will be updated closer to the event.
