SCU Copeland Invitational

2016 — CA/US

Reverend Copeland Invitational Debate Tournament

At Santa Clara University

Friday, January 22-Saturday, January 23, 2016

Dear Colleagues:

You and your squad are invited to the Fr. Raymond F. Copeland Invitational Debate Tournament at Santa Clara University on January 22 and 23, 2016. This year the tournament will not only feature 6 preliminary rounds of NPDA style Parliamentary debate in two divisions: Novice and Open, but also 4 preliminary rounds of NFA style Lincoln/Douglas debate in two divisions: Novice and Open. Our tournament is an inexpensive opportunity for your debaters to shake off the winter rust and begin to prepare for their championship season.

Entries are due by Wednesday, January 20 at 9pm.

Registration will take place at the TABROOM.COM website. The tournament name is the SCU Copeland Invitational 2016.

Father Copeland was a long time coach and supporter of debate at Santa Clara University, member of the NCFA and a distinguished professor of religion.

Hope to see you at SCU!

Thanks,

Melan Jaich

Debate Information

The SCU Copeland Invitational offers 6 preliminary rounds of open and novice NPDA parliamentary debate and 4 preliminary rounds of open and novice NFA Lincoln/Douglas debate.  We will administer the tournament in accordance with NPDA & NFA rules and will be a sanctioned tournament. The schedule will allow for Octofinals or Quarterfinals contingent on registration. We will break brackets in elimination rounds.

Judging

One judge will cover 2 teams and 2 L/D debaters or fraction thereof. PLEASE bring sufficient judges to cover your entries! We charge a steep uncovered judge fee because it has historically been difficult to hire enough college judges to cover all uncovered teams. Judges are committed one round beyond the round in which their school is eliminated. If you have judges in excess of your commitment, we would be ecstatic to hire them. We will offer $30 per round. Please email mjaich@scu.edu for more details.

Fees

We charge: $30 per team entry and $100 for each uncovered team (in addition to the entry fee). Fees will be assessed Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Noon.  Drops after that point will incur a $60 nuisance fee.  Fees will be collected at registration prior to the first round of debate.

Entry Procedure

We will handle entries through TABROOM.COM and please submit entries by Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 9pm. Checks should be made payable to "Santa Clara Debate."

Awards

We will offer awards to the following:

* All competitors in elimination rounds of Debate.

* The top 5 speakers in each division of Parliamentary Debate.

Parking and Public Transit

Friday parking on campus is $6 and Saturday parking is free. We are served by Caltrain and a free shuttle runs between the tournament hotel, Santa Clara U. and the Airport Terminals at Norman Y. Mineta Airport.
