ND Parliamentary Debate Warm Up

2015 — CA/US

Notre Dame High School is pleased to invite you to the Parliamentary Debate Warm Up tournament on September 18-19th, 2015!  This tournament is open to Varsity and Novice students in hopes of preparing for a rigorous tournament season!  The tournament will feature 5 rounds of preliminary debate and breaks to quarters for varsity and 5 rounds for Novice with awards for undefeated teams and top speakers!

About the Tournament:

Schools may register as many teams as they wish for the tournament (teams of 2 students), up to the maximum capacity of the tournament (60 teams).  Students do not need to dress formally-this is a fun tournament, so casual dress is encouraged!  Topics will be announced 20 minutes before each round in the student area/prep room, and students may use the internet, pre-prepared briefs, downloaded or paper articles to formulate argument.  Team prep is allowed, but not coach prep.  Debates will utilize the 7-7-7-7-5-5 format of CHSSA structure.  There will be two varsity round that will feature alternative formats (or polygon rounds), more information about which will be released closer to the tournament.  Novice teams will have an additional 10 minutes of prep and reduced speech times as follows: 5-5-5-5-3-3 Topics will be drawn from current events and topics of current relevant interest.  There will be two rounds of pre-announced topic areas, to be released on Sept 11.  Topics are written by a topic committee consisting of Armand Domalewski (former coach from Evergreen, DVHS among others), Sierra Maciorowski (Formerly of Sonoma Academy, current debater at Santa Rosa JC), and Miguel Samano (Formerly of West Ranch HS, current debater for Stanford). Additionally, two rounds will include topic strikes.  Undefeated teams at the end of the tournament, as well as students judged as being the top speakers, will receive awards.  Varsity Semifinalists and finalists will all receive awards.

Entries/Divisions/Judging:

Novice are students who have not competed in competitive debate, not just students who have never done Parli.  The division might be collapsed if not enough entries warrant a separate division.

Varsity students may judge any rounds, including varsity rounds.  Yes, you can use your older students to judge!  Free NFL points for all!  Please indicate these students as they will not be used in later rounds with undefeated teams.

Please enter 1 judge per 2 entries or fraction thereof.  The more judges the better, and since you may use varsity students to judge, my goal is for there to be no shortage of judges so this tournament can run as efficiently as possible.

**Please note-in order to accomodate additional teams, the rooms I acquired mostly require adults to be in the room.  Please bring as many adult judges as possible so I can use them in these rooms**

Cost:

The cost for registration is 25.00/team for Novice, 45.00/team for Varsity.  There is no school fee.

Students may bring their own lunch, or they may purchase a lunch for 5.00 on campus.  Food for chaperones will be provided at no cost.

Make checks payable to: Notre Dame San Jose

You may mail checks in advance of the tournament to:
