Dear Coach,
Your team is cordially invited to the Cardinal Debate Invitational, hosted in person at Sedgwick
High School, on October 3rd, 2026. Our tournament will have Novice, JV, and Open
divisions. Novices will be limited to the NDCA Case List.
The first 80 entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until we meet our room
capacity. All entries will be waitlisted and taken based on available space. All entries will be
waitlisted and will not be removed from the waitlist until debater names are added.
KSHSAA rules are in effect unless the invitation or tournament communication notes
exceptions. Third and fourth-year debaters may judge novice rounds.
All divisions will be four rounds, with the top 8 teams with the best records receiving
recognition in each division. Sweepstakes awards for the top two teams will be given.
Entry fees will be $8.00 per team (price includes lunches).

TOURNAMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. All teams will be debating this year’s resolution– "Resolved: The United States federal
government should establish national health insurance in the United States.”
2. All debates will use the standard 8-3-5 cross-examination format with 8 minutes of prep time per
team, per round.
3. Each school is required to bring at least one judge for every 2 teams and is encouraged to bring
additional judges.
4. Novice is any team comprised of two individuals in which this is their first year of policy debate
for BOTH members.
5. JV is any team comprised of two individuals in which this is the first OR second year of policy
debate for BOTH members.
6. Any team more than 10 minutes late to the round (through their own fault) will receive a 3-4/0
Points loss.
7. No two debaters from different schools may debate together as a team.
8. Any rules challenges (evidence or otherwise) must be made before the beginning of the next
round. Issues of clipping cards should be argued in the debate and the ultimate decision will be
made at the discretion of the judge evaluating the round.
9. The tab room will always be open and it is your job to check the results before the awards
assembly. Once the assembly starts, the placements are final.
10. KSHSAA revised rules for internet use will be followed. As you register on-site, you will be
provided with wifi login information for competition purposes.
11. We will direct power match in all divisions for rounds 3 and 4.
12. Cancellations will result in rescheduling, substitution of host teams, or byes.
13. No Mavericks unless it is a last resort and has been approved by the tournament director.
14. Fees for entry are non-refundable except in the case of needing to drop the team due to COVID
quarantine.
15. Coaches and/or sponsors may be asked to judge in case of a necessary judge change.
