The Nano Nagle Tournament

We invite you to the Nano Nagle Tournament at Presentation High School in San Jose, CA. We provide competition in Varsity Lincoln Douglas debate and Varsity Public Forum debate. The tournament will use the NSDA September/October topic for all divisions.

Tournament Overview

The tournament will be able to accommodate approximately 70 VLD and 65 VPF entries. Once we reach the cap in an event we will start on the waitlist. We will try to prioritize new school admission, smaller schools, and then independent entries. All admissions are subject to the tournament director's discretion. There will be an initial cap of 9 entries in LD and 9 in PF.

Both divisions will feature six preliminary rounds of debate and will clear all winning records to the elimination rounds up to a full double-octafinal.

In VLD, mutual preference judging will be available to all schools whose judges have entered their paradigms on Tabroom. ALL of your judges must have a paradigm on Tabroom in order for you to receive prefs.

Location
Presentation High School is located in South San Jose near the Willow Glen neighborhood. Our school address is 2281 Plummer Avenue, San Jose, CA. 95125.
We ask that you park on campus at all times.

Campus will open each morning at 8 am; we look forward to welcoming you!

Tournament Office
The Speech and Debate office is located in room 302 on the side of our Student Center (facing the pool). This office will be where you can stop by to pay fees, ask questions, or express tab concerns. Please check out our campus map or ask a Presentation High School student if you need help finding anything.

Meals & Concessions
Tournament fees include meals for all competitors, judges, and coaches. Snacks and drinks will also be sold each day.
Vegetarian options will always be available for all meals.

Judging

Judging requirement is 2 Rounds per entry in LD or PF. All schools are required to bring qualified, competent judges. All judges are required to have a paradigm on tabroom.com. If you enter judges without a paradigm, you risk having your prefs turned off. All judges must be familiar with using Tabroom.com for ballots and are required to do so. We will charge a $50 Administration Fee for each judge who needs to be trained or have their tabroom account fixed. In the past, this has caused significant delays to the tournament.

ALL JUDGES ARE STILL OBLIGATED THROUGH THE OCTOFINALS. Judges are then obligated for one round past the exit of their final entry.

We will not provide judges for hire.

Independent Entry Policy
There are no exceptions to these rules. We cannot, for liability reasons, accept independent entries that do not meet the following criteria:

1. You must have an adult, school-approved chaperone on campus at all times during the tournament, and they must be present at check-in/upon call from Tab. This chaperone is not allowed to leave campus and must be present if you compete in elimination rounds. Failure to do so will result in immediate disqualification — even if it occurs during the bid round.

2. You must possess approval, in the form of a signed official letter, from your school's administration and acknowledging the name of your chaperone as a school-approved chaperone.

You can place the independent signed letter here. Please title the document with Entry School/Name + event for easy processing.

The letter should be addressed to Kristina Luscher, Principal (Presentation HS), include the school-approved chaperone, and have the principal's or head of school's signature. Letters must be received by kluscher@presentationhs.org by 10/4, or entries may be dropped and/or subject to a fee.

We do not accept entries under the names of for-profit private organizations, and those students must compete under the name of their actual school. Students who participate in these groups are free to continue doing so, but they must obtain approval in the same way as for any other independent entry. We do not offer "school protection" for these students so that they do not have to debate each other. We do not provide school protection between a high school and its affiliated middle school.
