Greetings, Survivors!

The Monterey Speech & Debate Tribe is thrilled to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Monterey Madness IQT NIETOC tournament on Saturday, October 17th! We are excited to have your tribe join us for a full day of competition, strategy, and unforgettable performances.

Our goal is to create an exciting, organized, and positive tournament experience for everyone. Just like on Survivor, success depends on everyone pitching in, so please come prepared to judge multiple rounds to help keep camp running smoothly. Together, we'll make sure no one's torch gets snuffed before they've had a fair chance to compete.

Camp Location, Parking, & Arrival

Monterey High School is located at:

3211 47th Street
Lubbock, TX 79413

Please park in the cafeteria parking lot located on 50th Street and Gary Avenue. Additional parking will be available across from the auditorium if needed.

For the duration of the tournament, all entrances except the cafeteria entrance will remain locked. A member of the Monterey team will greet you at the door to help you get inside.

New this year: A $25 security fee will be applied to each competing school—because keeping hundreds of teens in suits safe (and only figuratively at each other’s throats) takes a team of resource officers.

Debate Events

Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Resolved: Outer space colonization is a moral imperative.

Cross-Examination Debate
Resolved: The United States federal government should establish national health insurance in the United States.

Congress

Congress will use the Fall 2026 TFA docket:

• Preliminary Sessions: Legislation 1–5

• Final Session: Legislation 6–10

Important Dates

Your tribe must submit entries by October 7th at 5:00 p.m.

Drops must be entered by October 8th at 5:00 p.m.

Entry Fees

• $15.00 — Individual Events (Impromptu is $12), Duo, Duet, and Congress

• $20.00 — Lincoln-Douglas and Cross-Examination Debate

Sweepstakes

Only one tribe can claim the title of Sole Survivor, but we'll recognize the Top Three Schools in Overall Sweepstakes.

• 1st Place — 12 points

• 2nd Place — 10 points

• 3rd Place — 8 points

• 4th Place — 6 points

• 5th–8th Place — 4 points

Debate

• Champion — 12 points

• Runner-Up — 10 points

• Semifinalists — 8 points

NIETOC bids will be awarded based on the number of entries per event as specified in the NIETOC bid guidelines.

9:45 a.m. – Round 1 Pattern B

10:00 a.m. – Round 2 LD & CX

11:30 a.m. – Round 2 Pattern A

12:00 p.m. – Round 3 LD & CX

1:15 p.m. – Round 2 Pattern B, Congress Finals

2:30 p.m. – LD & CX Quarterfinals

3:00 p.m. – Pattern A Finals

4:00 p.m. – LD & CX Semifinals

4:30 p.m. – Pattern B Finals & CX Finals

5:30 p.m – LD & CX Finals

Host School Competitors

Please note that Monterey High School will participate under the TFA host school initiative, which allows host-school students to compete. Expect to see our novice competitors in your rounds.

Whether you're delivering a powerful interpretation, making a persuasive case, or surviving one more preliminary round, we hope you leave with great memories—and maybe even a little immunity along the way.

TFA/TSCA Membership Reminder

Coaches, please make sure your TFA/TSCA membership is paid prior to participating in TFA activities. A current membership is required to:

Host a TFA tournament
Serve as a voting member at the annual TFA/TSCA Convention

Furthermore, failure to pay your TFA/TSCA membership in a timely manner will result in a fine being assessed to your school.

For IQT hosts:
Deadline to become a TFA/TSCA member without a fine - October 31
Membership paid between November 1 and November 30 - $100 fine
Membership paid between December 1 and December 31 - $200 fine
IQT hosts that pay their TFA/TSCA membership after December 31 will be sanctioned from hosting an IQT the following year.

For non-IQT hosts:
Deadline to become a TFA/TSCA member without a fine - January 31
Membership paid between February 1 and February 15 - $100 fine
Membership paid between February 16 and TFA State Registration - $200 fine
Failure to become a TFA/TSCA member by TFA State Registration will result in the school’s entry for TFA State being dropped.

Ideally, your membership will be completed when you register for the Convention. However, if you are not attending the Convention, please visit the “Join TSCA or Renew membership” button when navigating to the etsca.com website.

IMPORTANT: When completing your membership, you must select “TFA” under Interest Group in order for the membership to be generated on your invoice.
