Maroon Invitational

The Menlo-Atherton Debate Team cordially welcomes you to the first annual Maroon Invitational, hosted at Menlo-Atherton High School. Participation in the tournament is by invitation only.

Fees

The fee per debate entry is $100. Teams that provide judges will be charged $50 for each round their judges miss (i.e. the judge was assigned a round and could not be found).

Judging

Teams that provide qualified judges are exempt from paying the $100 entry fee (1 judge exempts 1 team). Qualified judges are defined as those with sufficient competitive and/or judging experience in collegiate Parliamentary (NPDA), NFA-LD, or CEDA/CX debate. This definition is not absolute; M-A Debate reserves the right to approve or reject judges at our discretion.

Rules

Preparation time is 25 minutes and begins at the time listed on the schedule for each round. Participants may consult any resources they wish during prep, but cannot under any circumstances bring material prepared outside of prep time into the round. They may also not consult anyone besides their partner during prep or access the internet while in-round.

Speech times (in minutes): 7-8-8-8-4-5
There is no protected time in any speech. There are no grace periods. There are no points of clarification (POC).

No new arguments may be made in rebuttal speeches. A point of order (POO), which stops time, may be raised in rebuttals to call for an argument to be struck from the flow as new.

A point of information (POI) may be raised in any of the constructive speeches to ask a question (15 seconds max). Debaters are not obligated to answer a POI.

The Maroon Invitational will utilize flex time. There will be 2 minutes of Negative flex before the LOC, 2 minutes of Affirmative flex before the MG, 1 minute of Negative flex before the MO, and 1 minute of Affirmative flex before the PMR. The team controlling flex may ask questions of the other team, but not the other way around. They may end their flex at any point, and are allowed to spend their time asking questions or preparing.

Prize

The team that wins finals will receive $300 and two Champion trophies.
