The tournament defines novice and varsity as follows:

Varsity: A student who competed in 8 or more rounds of speech or debate in the previous school year, has attended the National Speech & Debate Tournament, or has broken into an elimination round at the State or District tournament will be considered varsity. If one person on a CX, PF, or Duo team meets the standards of Varsity, the team must be registered as Varsity.

Novice: A student who has not competed before the current school year, competed in less than 8 speech or debate rounds last school year, and is not disqualified through other criteria will be considered novice. If one student in a CX, PF, or Duo team qualifies as Varsity, the team must compete as Varsity.

Double Entry: A student may double-enter in a maximum of two speech events and one debate event. If double-entered in speech events, it is the student’s responsibility to report to the judges of said events and establish that they are double-entered and will need to adjust speaker order accordingly.
