Invitation

No tricks, just treats as Olathe East High School cordially invites you and your debaters to attend the Olathe East “Hawk Talkers” Invitational Debate Tournament on Saturday, November 1st. Don’t put that Halloween costume away just yet, we will keep the fun rolling with a costume competition in addition to the very serious debate rounds!

We will host open, JV and novice divisions. JV is limited to first- and second-year debaters and we will not be very understanding if you won’t honor the letter of this rule. We reserve the right to disqualify any students found in violation of this rule. Novices should runNative Renewables, Domain Awareness, Science Diplomacy, or Russia LNG. Use the same advantage areas as the packet, but debaters are not restricted to only using the packet evidence. Same with negative; run the same arguments, but feel free to use more than just the packet evidence. Prep time will be 8 minutes for all divisions. All rounds are closed to spectators.

The tournament will consist of three divisions: Open, JV, and Novice. We invite you to enter as many as six (6) teams distributed as you would like. Schools wishing to enter additional teams will need to provide 1 judge for every 2 teams beyond the initial 6 entries. Priority will be granted to schools who grant Olathe East the same courtesy. Entry fees are $7.00 per team. Coaches or sponsors may be asked to judge one round.

Below is a copy of our tournament schedule, the tournament regulations and entry are attached. If our tournament is filled when we receive your entry, we will notify you immediately. The entry deadline is Friday, October 24th.

Any teams more than ten minutes late to their round through no fault of the tournament will receive a forfeit loss on a seven.

Costume Divisions will include Main Character Energy (best individual costume), Dynamic Duo (best partner costumes), and Power Squad Planning (whole team coordinates in costuming). We do need to follow school rules which include NO facemasks or weapons. Either of those will result in immediate removal from the tournament.
