The Washburn Breadbowl
2025 — Friday online, Sat Washburn HS, MN/US
Washburn Breadbowl
Welcome to the Washburn Breadbowl Invitational!
The Washburn Breadbowl will be held at Washburn High School in Minneapolis (information below). All five divisions (Novice A, B, and C, JV, and Varsity) will be offered. All divisions will have three debates (see schedule below). Please try to register by 10/16 so that we can ensure enough food, rooms, and judges are available.
As a Halloween tournament, we are encouraging costumes - be creative! We'll have prizes for best creative costumes (team and individual).
The Brian Plunkett Creative Argument Award is also back! Encourage your JV and Varsity debaters to bring out of the box, creative, and dynamic arguments to the debate. They can be competitively focused arguments, or non-competitive just for fun!

Tournament Location
Washburn High School
201 W 49th St,
Minneapolis, MN 55419
When entering Washburn High School, please enter via the main entrance, which is door 1 on the south side of the building (on W 50th Ave). If you are parking, please park in the lot on the northwest side of the school (near the intersection of Pleasant St and W 49th St). Please do not let your bus driver park right outside the front entrance on W 50th Ave as this will severely impede traffic- have them pull down to the west side of the building on Pleasant St. Trust me, this will save you, your driver, your kids, and the other drivers a headache.
When you arrive, please head to the cafeteria, which can be found in the basement of the building. There should be someone to greet you at the front door and direct you, but essentially you enter and walk until you can take the stairs down a floor.
Tournament Schedule
Friday Schedule (Online)
Check In: 2:45-3:20
Tech Check: 3:30-4:00
Round 1: 4:00-6:00
Dinner Break: 6:00-6:30
Round 2: 6:30-8:30
Friday: Debate will be online; check in from 2:45-3:30, pairings at 3:40, and we will begin rounds at 4:00pm. (20 minutes of tech check time from 3:40-4:00.) PLEASE make sure your debaters have linked tabroom accounts and have gone through the tech checklist. If your debaters are not connected then *you*, the coach, are responsible for sending them the link to correct room. If their tech does not work and you can't promptly fix it then we will be forced to give your debaters a forfeit in order to keep the tournament on time. If your debaters are not prepared, it not only hurts them, but it wastes another team's time (since they get a forced bye)!
Saturday Schedule (In person at Washburn High School)
All teams should arrive BEFORE 9:15am
Round 1: 10:00am-11:45am
Lunch: 11:45am-12:30pm
Round 2: 12:45pm-2:30pm
Round 3: 3:00pm-4:45pm
Awards: Done by 5:45pm
Very important ------->>>>>Please arrive to the tournament between 8:45am-9:15am. The minute your team is on the bus and moving please text the Tournament Director, Jake Swede, at 507-382-3740. Let him know who you are, your ETA to the tournament, and if any changes to registration need to be made (including debaters and judges). <<<<<<--------
I recommend planning to have your buses pick up at 5:45pm on on the south side of W 49th st (just north of the high school) or the east side of Pleasant Ave. This is an easy place for them to idle - plenty of space, little traffic. Make sure the bus driver contacts you about where they are.
Standard practice notes:
There should ALWAYS be an adult with your team at the tournament. You cannot drop off students unsupervised or leave them unsupervised at a tournament.
At least one of your team's coaches should have your students' emergency contact information with them in a physical file for ease of access in case of any emergency.
You should have one judge for every two partnerships you have entered in the tournament (MNUDL schools you are excluded from this). If you have an odd number of partnerships, round your judge obligation up to the nearest whole. If you are missing a judge, the tournament reserves the right to charge you for the standard cost of hiring plus a judge finding fee ($145 per judge Saturday, $75 per judge Friday). If you are low on judges the day of the tournament, the tournament will do its best to provide a judge to cover you, but if a sufficient number of judges are not available, the first partnerships dropped will be novices from schools that did not meet their judge obligation.
We will be serving pizza, snacks, and water for lunch - there will also be snacks available before round 3 and before awards. Please know your students' dietary restrictions so that we can provide them with food as necessary. Ideally, communicate any restrictions at least a week in advance to the tournament.
Thanks and see you at Washburn High School!
