Sumner Academy Spooktacular Novice Debate Invitational

2025 — Kansas City, KS/US

The Sumner Academy Speech and Debate Team invites you to enter our Spooktacular Novice Debate Invitational on November 1st at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science.

We will host a Saturday-only competition for Novice. Entry fees are $5 each. There are no entry fees for Debate-Kansas City UDL schools. We are asking students to refrain from wearing costumes as this can cause a distraction in the rounds.

I have about 30-35 rooms available (60-70 teams). I will initially limit schools to 6 total entries but anticipate being able to accommodate extras particularly for schools who meet the following criteria: 1) are EKNSDA schools 2) are schools whose tournaments we attend 3) schools that provide us with additional entries at their host tournament.

We will be asking for 1 judge for every 3 entries. If that is difficult to do, please let me know. I don't want that to stop you from attending. Please ask your experienced high school debaters to help judge. Preferred juniors-seniors. Use your best judgement. I will even sign off on community service hours for them if that gets them to the tournament. We will feed them too!

The tournament will have 5 novice rounds on Saturday with no elimination rounds.

The Novice division is for students in their first year of Debate. They will be debating the topic:

Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly increase its exploration and/or development of the Arctic.

The Novice division will adhere to the NDCA case areas:

  1. Domain Awareness
  2. Native Renewables
  3. Russian Natural Gas
  4. Science Diplomacy

Use the same advantage areas as the packet, but debaters are not restricted to only using the packet evidence. Same with negative; run the same arguments, but feel free to use more than just the packet evidence.

Sweepstakes will be awarded to the top three schools based on the cumulative record of your best 4 teams. Top 8 teams and Top 6 speakers will also be awarded.
