CHSSA has [deleted] given us permission to host the qualifying tournament virtually by a 3/28/2025 deadline. This virtual tournament will be on Monday March 24, 2025. If you have interested teams to enter, please do so by Sunday evening.

ELIGIBILITY: You do not have to have competed at the prior state qualifier for policy debate to enter. Any school with an eligible team can participate. Per WBFL rules, however, both debaters must have competed at a league debate tournament during this academic year in order to be eligible for the state qualifying tournament.

SCHEDULE: The schedule is TBD, but we are planning to start with Round 1 at 4pm on Monday. The tournament is virtual. The actual schedule and number of rounds will depend on the number of entries. If necessary, we will continue into the evening and into following days if required.

ROUND 1- 4pm Monday (random pairing)
ROUND 2- 6pm Monday
ROUND 3- 8pm Monday (per CHSSA, this may be moved to accommodate schedules)

The field and updated schedule will be released Sunday night once registration closes.

NOTE: Given the circumstances, we will NOT [deleted] permit coach overs when teams from the same school debate each other, unless we have specific permission from a CHSSA official. For now, we have been instructed that "these rounds should be actual debates" and be "real rounds." When it is a same-school match-up, though, a judge from that same school may adjudicate the round. We will otherwise follow the published WBFL procedures for quals and CHSSA rules.

WBFL DEBATE Procedures for State Quals

Double elimination tournament (“two down”), with the first round randomized, and all rounds thereafter divided into a “winners” and “losers” bracket and power matched, adjusted as needed for imbalances.

These procedures will be followed until we reach a FINAL round. The FINAL round is any round where, based on the remaining entries, we can have a single-elimination round to yield the number of qualifiers we have. For that round, we SEED the remaining entries according to CHSSA rules, with the highest seeds hitting the lowest seeds and, if there are not enough entries, the higher seeds receiving BYES to state. After the round, the winners qualify to state. Any additional qualifiers and/or backup entries are determined based on the SEEDS of the losing entries. (Thus, an undefeated high seed who loses to a once-defeated lower seed would not qualify because they lost; but if there are more spots than winners, that seed could still qualify as a loser based on how their seeding end up after the FINAL round.)

Ballot review will be afforded after round 2.

There will be one (1) judge in rounds 1 and 2; and starting in round 3 and thereafter, there will be three (3) judge panels which will decide, by majority vote, wins and losses.
