SPDL Novice Tournament

2024 — Newtown, PA/US

This tournament is for novice studentsonly. Novices are defined as freshmen, sophomores, and juniors/seniors who are in their first year of competition.Any student judges should be very experienced juniors or (preferred) seniors, as they will be asked to give brief oral critiques after each round. Please be sure to note in tabroom if your judge is a student judge. Oral critiques are not part of our regular season tournaments and have been incorporated into the novice tournament to provide our league's newest competitors with the best learning experience.

We will run one Congress session, one Policy Debate round, one Extemporaneous Speaking round, and two rounds of all other speech and debate events. Normal SPDL tournaments include three rounds of debate events, three rounds of speech events (except Extemporaneous Speaking, which is two rounds), two Congress sessions, and two Policy Debate rounds.

On Wednesday, we are using the September/October topics for LD and PF. We are NOT using the novice topic.

Please be sure that all of your competitors and judges have linked taproom accounts before Wednesday. Unlinked judges and competitors will not receive room blasts when they have rounds, and judges will not be able to complete electronic ballots. If you are not sure what that means or would like some assistance creating tabroom accounts or linking your judges and/or students in tabroom, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Please remind your judges to bring a device (preferably a laptop or tablet) on Wednesday. Judges can complete electronic ballots using a phone, but it's a bit more challenging and sometimes frustrating for judges to enter their feedback using a phone.
