Novice & Open Divisions

Dear Debate Coach,

You are cordially invited to the Dodge City High School Invitational Debate Tournament on Saturday, October 26, 2024. This will be a one-day tournament consisting of five rounds. There will be three divisions: Novice (Case List), Junior Varsity (1st and 2nd year debaters), and Open. Only debaters in their first year of Debate should be entered in the Novice division. The novice division may have 3rd and 4th-year debaters serving as judges.

Competition Rules and Schedule:

  1. We will use the KSHSAA-approved 2024-2025 high school debate topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly strengthen its protection of domestic intellectual property rights in copyrights, patents, and/or trademarks.

  2. Entry fees are $6.00 per team.

  3. Initially, we will be accepting six teams per school, but I don’t anticipate this growing beyond the capacity of our giant building.

  4. Any cancellation after 6 p.m. on Oct. 23 will still result in registration fees being charged.

  5. We will have a judging pool, but sponsors, assistant coaches, and head coaches may be asked to judge in that order.

  6. Any team more than 10 minutes late to a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit and receive a 3/4 ranking.

  7. The first two rounds will be preset, and we will delay power match the remaining rounds.

  8. All debates will be in the 8-3-5 Cross-Examination format with 8 minutes of prep for each team. Teams will have to time themselves.

  9. No two debaters from different schools may debate together as a team.

  10. Any rules or challenges (evidence or otherwise) must be made before the beginning of the next round. Issues of clipping cards should be argued in the debate, and the ultimate decision will be made at the discretion of the judge evaluating the round.

  11. The tab room will always be open, and it is your job to check the results before the awards assembly. Once the assembly starts, the placements are final.

  12. We will provide internet access to everyone. As you register on-site, you will be provided with wifi login information, if not earlier, through email.

  13. We will direct power-match in both divisions for round 3 and beyond.

  14. Cancellations will result in rescheduling, the substitution of host teams, or byes.

  15. No Mavericks may compete unless it is a last resort and has been approved by the tournament director.

  16. Tab will be open and posted on Tabroom for coaches.

  17. We will medal the top six teams in each division.

  18. Sweeps will be calculated based on each school’s best three entries with teams in at least two divisions.

  19. Electronic devices are permitted. Teams may not unplug anything to charge their equipment.

Our tournament will be judged by some former debaters (or 3rd and 4th-year debaters for the novice division), but primarily the judging pool will be parents of our debaters and community members, so please plan accordingly.
