Qualifying:
-
Students who have two winning records (number of wins > number of losses) at Open League tournaments will be eligible for the NYCUDL Championships. Each competitor qualifies individually, and schools can send a maximum of 10 teams of qualifying students to the championships. As with normal tournaments, coaches are required to group students into the least number of teams possible.
-
All students who attend regardless of qualifying or being at large must have attended at least two NYCUDL regular season tournaments.
-
Schools with less than two qualifying teams can send up to two “at large” teams. This means that:
-
A school with 0 qualified teams, can send 2 “at large” teams.
-
A school with 1 qualified team, can send 1 “at large” team.
-
A school with 2 or more qualified teams, cannot send any “at large” teams
-
As long as you are minimizing the total number of qualified teams, you may add unqualified students to fill out the team.
Topics:
-
PF MS & HS League Topic: Resolved: Civil disobedience should be the primary method to advocate for social change.
-
PF National Topic: April National Topic. Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its investment in domestic nuclear energy

Preliminary Debate Rounds:
-
Middle School PF and Parli will each have three preliminary debate rounds
-

Elimination Debate Rounds:
-
Due to the one-day schedule, no more than 8 teams (quarters) will clear to elimination rounds per division. Some divisions may break to semis or finals based on the number of entries with winning records. This means that NOT all winning records will clear to elimination rounds. Top teams will be based on records and speaker points.
-
Only teams that have a winning record can qualify for elimination rounds.
-
Winning records are based on how teams do in preliminary debate rounds.
-
Winning record for MS: 3-0 or 2-1
-
Winning record for HS: 4-0 or 3-1
End of Year Awards:
We are a teaching league and believe strongly in the power of debate and its impacts on students’ lives. We believe that all students benefit from participation regardless of their overall tournament performance and that everyone gets better the more they debate. Therefore, the main purpose of our points system is to promote student participation. We hope this system will encourage a reluctant debater to take a chance and come debate at a tournament even if they don’t feel fully ready to take the plunge! Awards will be distributed at Champs.
-
Please look at this points document to see if your debaters are qualified for champs and if they have earned a gold, silver, or bronze distinction for this year.
-
Points are based on the following criteria:
-
10 points for the fall workshop
-
1 point for each tournament
-
3 points for each round that is a loss
-
6 points for each round that is win or a bye
In partnership,
