Moody Middle School Speech and Debate Invitational

WHEN: April 27th, 2024

WHERE: 7800 Woodman Road, Henrico, VA

EVENTS: This event will follow VHSL guidelines to prepare debaters for the upcoming regional, state, and national tournaments happening throughout Virginia. We hope to be the first Middle School student to organize a tournament in the area and are especially hoping to invite our fellow Central Virginia Middle Schools, as well as the High Schools in the Area. We hope to provide a strong local tournament at the standard of state-wide tournaments.

Debate

  1. Lincoln Douglas: 4 Rounds

Topic: Resolved: The primary objective of the United States criminal justice system ought to be rehabilitation.

  1. Public Forum: Novice and Open with 4 rounds
    1. Topic: Resolved: The United Nations should abolish permanent membership on its Security Council.

Forensics

In this contest, there are three divisions: Oratory, Prose, and Poetry. In Oratory, participants will receive a designated topic and must choose a stance to discuss. For Prose and Poetry, only pieces from external sources are allowed; no self-written works are permitted. Please bring a printed copy of your piece and arrive promptly for registration. We aspire to be the first Middle School to host a tournament in the region, and we extend a special invitation to our fellow Central Virginia Middle Schools and local High Schools. Our goal is to offer a high-quality local competition comparable to state-wide tournaments, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to meet each and every one of you.

The following speech entries will be allowed, with two rounds.

    1. Original Oratory
      1. Topic: "Should genetic editing technologies, such as CRISPR, be used to enhance human capabilities?"
    2. Prose
    3. Poetry

JUDGING REQUIREMENTS:

Each event will have two judges, one from Moody and another selected from the other participating schools. (Forensics)

1 Judge per 2 LD Entries or fraction thereof (Debate)

1 Judge per 2 PF Entries or fraction thereof (Debate)

AWARDS:

Awards will be given to the top three entries in each category. Awards will also be given to schools that have the most competitors.

DROPS:

Drops for any reason are permittable within 48 hours. If a school fails to notify the tournament before that, they are held accountable for the original entry fees and the judging quota. Failure to do so will prevent the rest of the students from the school from competing and a $50 dropped judge fee.

Fees

This tournament is entirely free for all competitors, however there is a limit the amount of participants allowed to compete, and it’s on a first come first serve basis.
