Dear High School Speech and Debate Coaches:

Kern Region Forensic League is proud to invite you to the Stockdale Showdown – the first tournament of our 2023-2024 speech and debate season. Entry registration will be through our tournament site athttp://krflspeechdebate.tabroom.com.

CATEGORIES OFFERED

All 12 CHSSA Speech events will be offered with National and International Extemp running in a combined panel. In addition, debate events will include Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas and Policy Debate. Please check for event rules and regulations athttps://chssa.org/rulesandregulations/

ENTRIES

You may enter as many students per event as you like; the best three competitors from your team in each event will count toward team sweepstakes. Each entry will be charged $5.00. Duo Interp, Policy, and Public Forum will be charged $10.00.

We will hold 3 rounds of each event.. All speech events will run concurrently during speech rounds. All debate events will run concurrently during debate rounds.

Students may enter up to two events in speech and up to one debate event. Students who enter multiple events do so at their own discretion. Judges will wait no longer than 10 minutes after the final speaker before marking a competitor as a no-show. We do not recommend competitors enter in both Policy and Extemp as policy rounds will not end before the beginning of Extemp prep.

AWARDS and SWEEPS

Trophies will be awarded to 1st – 3rd place for each Varsity and Medals awarded to 1st-3rd place for JV. When Varsity and JV are combined, JV competitors have an opportunity to earn a varsity award.

All schools entered in this tournament and the upcoming Congress/WSD tournament will be eligible for the October sweepstakes. The 50% of schools with the most entries will compete for the Large Schools Sweeps and the 50% of schools with the fewest entries will compete for the Small Schools Sweeps. Schools earn points for their top 3 entries in each of the 16 events with partnered events earning double points (WSD triple) and the top 5 entries per school in congress earning points. 5 points for 1st, 4 points for 2nd, 3 points for 3rd, 2 points for 4th and 5th, 1 point for 6th and beyond.

FOOD

Lunch meal deals for students will be sold for $5 and will include an Entrée, Side, and Drink. These should be ordered ahead of time by purchasing them on tabroom. The snack bar will accept card and cash.

JUDGE OBLIGATIONS

For the 2023-2024 competition year, we are trial-running judge obligations. For this year, these are suggested guidelines with no enforcement mechanism. If there is a shortage of judges, debate will be double flighted, speech rounds will grow from 5 competitors per round up to 7 competitors per round, and schools with the greatest imbalance of entries to judges will be asked to drop entries in the worst case scenario.

In speech events, your team should provide one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof; 6 entries = 2 judges, etc. In debate events, your team should provide one judge for every two entries or fraction thereof; 3 entries = 2 judges, etc. Remember, partner events count as one entry in judges needed and as two entries in fees to pay ($5 per competitor = $10 per duo entry). We promise judges a lunch, lots of goodies, and coffee.

One judge may be entered in both the speech and debate pool. Your judge obligation is for all three rounds of that type and multiple judges can fill the obligation throughout the day. Please have judges notify tab if they leave the tournament early so they will not be added to later rounds.

ENTRY DEADLINES/LEGISLATION

11:59 PM, Thursday, October 5th is the tournament deadline. Any adds after this time will be approved on a case-by-case basis. Drops after this time will not be eligible for a refund of the registration fee. Substitutions will be allowed.
