Regarding the World Schools Division
To support the efforts of Team USA, a portion of the tournament proceeds will support the travel costs of coaches and members of the team.
In addition to providing this support, we will offer ANY SCHOOL who brings a team to compete in the World Schools division (which has no entry fee), 50% off of the entry fees for the LD divisions.
Some of you may be concerned because you do not have debaters who are experienced in World Schools Debate. We will be offering TRAINING on the Friday prior to the beginning of the tournament (during the Debate.LA Challenge).
Other Special Notes
* Debaters must compete under the name of their school.
* A school-approved chaperone must be on or near campus at all-times during the tournament.
* In Varsity LD, judges should be experienced LD or Policy judges. If you are bringing someone who *is* not experienced, or wouldn't be comfortable in a high-level LD round, you will be asked to hire judges. We will potentially hire-back your judge to judge in other events.
* We will be using Ordinal Rankings for judge placement in Varsity LD.
* Elimination rounds will use side-equalization.
* Judges will be asked to sign a list of instructions/guidelines.
Events
World Schools Debate
The World Schools Debate Tournament will take place on Saturday & Sunday during the regular tournament. If your team is interested in participating in this event, please email mbietz@hw.com.
The Debate.LA Challenge
The Debate.LA Challenge will take place on the Friday prior to the beginning of the tournament. Any school may enter up to 2 debaters in the Debate.LA Challenge. We will be using a "challenge format" for this small tournament.
Novice & Varsity Lincoln Douglas
Our regular tournament will take place on Saturday, Sunday, Monday (Varsity) and on Saturday and Sunday (Novice).
Speech Times
We will use normal 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 times in all rounds. So-called "flex prep" is not allowed, but debaters may ask questions during prep. This means you cannot transfer unused CX time to your prep time.
Judge Requirements
WSD
Schools must provide 1 judge for every entry in WSD.
The Debate.LA Challenge
The judging requirement is 1 judge for every debater.
Lincoln-Douglas
Schools must provide 1 judge for every 3 entries. Judges may not cover across divisions. There are no "Part-Time" judges. Every school must have their judges available for every prelim round. Judges are also obligated through Octafinals and then one round beyond the elimination of the team's last debater.
*Entourage rule* Every adult in attendance must make themselves available to judge. Experienced judges designated as an entourage judge will only be placed in rounds in which they are mutually preferred and where it is a round of significance. Non-experienced judges may be placed in any division.
