Congressional Debate State Championship

April 21-22, 2023

On behalf of the Mississippi High School Activities Association and the MHSAA Speech and Debate Coordinating Committee, welcome to the MHSAA Congressional Debate State Championship!

We proudly host this event in person at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, on April 21-22.

Each school can enter up to ten entries in the Congressional Debate. No waitlists will be cleared, and only students who are official members of the school's team may enter. Only schools that are Mississippi High School Activities Association members may compete in the event.

Legislation is posted on the webpage and divided into preliminary and final legislation. We will have two three-hour prelim sessions and one three-hour final session. If there are over 60 entries, we will hold a semifinal round. Break limits will be announced once the numbers are finalized after registration closes.

Students who break to the superfinal session will earn a medal. The top eight students, presiding officers from prelims, and the presiding officer from finals will be recognized at awards directly after the tournament. The top eight competitors and the supersession presiding officer will also be called on stage at the MHSAA Speech and Debate State Championship.

Each registered school should provide one non-affiliated judge or parliamentarian. Registration for student entries closes on April 17th at 8 pm, and judge registration closes on April 18th at 8 pm. THERE WILL BE NO LATE ENTRIES TO THE TOURNAMENT PER MHSAA RULES.

In the lead-up to the tournament, remember that you should observe good sportsmanship, adhere to the Honor Code of the NSDA, and exhibit humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service. We look forward to hosting you!
