Brawl at the Mall

2022 — Montgomery, AL/US

Coaches,

You are cordially invited to attend the Inaugural Brawl at the Mall, a Speech and Debate Tournament hosted at LAMP High School on Friday, October 28, and Saturday, October 29.

The schedule is set to offer two full rounds of Congress on Friday, starting at 2 pm and finishing that evening. Congress legislation will be due Friday, October 21 by 3:00 pm. Saturday will be Speech only, starting at 9 am and finishing that early evening after three rounds (no finals). Speech events will include Duo Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Programmed Oral Intepretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Impromptu, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Students may double enter any two speech events.

We hope this tournament gives our district’s students a chance to grow in Congressional Debate as well as the different Speech Events. We also think the format is advantageous for schools that only wish to attend Congress or Speech. There will be no need to arrange overnight lodging if your school opts for one day over the other. Of course, we encourage all schools to attend both days, but with only a three weeks' notice, we understand potential scheduling limitations.

We look forward to your considering joining us on that weekend!

Jordan Berry

P.S.  My students have asked for the following: since this is Halloween weekend, they are asking if teams can dress in business casual or in school-appropriate costumes. If you opt for the latter, we’ll be sure to give prizes/awards for the best competitor costume, best coach costume, and best squad costume. (NSDA rules prohibit costumes for Interp, so those costumes should not reflect the characters in the piece.)
