“Come Hell or High Water” Pre-Season Benefit Scrimmage for Knott Central High School Speech Flood Relief

Dear High School Speech Coaches:

There is an old saying that is deeply embedded in Kentucky vernacular, and it is the battle cry of a culture of strength and determination….. “Come Hell or High Water.” So, with this scrimmage invitation, we are determined, come hell or high water, to see our fellow speech and debate team of the Upper Kentucky River region be able to compete this upcoming year.

Following the massive, widespread and destructive flooding of Eastern Kentucky, Hindman (Knott County) reports that all but two businesses were affected by the flooding. Schools were completely ravaged and destroyed along with homes and lost lives. Several of the Knott Central and Hindman Elementary Speech Team trophies were even found miles away in a cemetery. The devastation cannot be put into words. Community support as we all know in the speech community is a huge part of funding for our programs. The infrastructure in Hindman has all but been demolished. The community is focused on rebuilding what will take years to get back. Their strength, courage, determination and passion in helping one another has been inspiring.

With that being said, we invite you to participate in a Pre-Season scrimmage to benefit this award winning Knott Central team. Speech means so much to this school and to this community. All proceeds of this scrimmage will go directly to their program. We hope that in the process of your participation, your team finds valuable feedback as we approach a brand new year. It is our mission to make sure all students are given two rounds of fantastic feedback and practice to carry into a new season.

Thank you so much for being a part of something bigger! If you want to contribute in any additional ways to the flood relief, please reach out and we can point you in the right direction. At the end of this document, you will see the devastation this community has faced. Please keep the people of these areas in your thoughts and prayers as they continue clean up efforts and start to rebuild and recover. Again, we look forward to kicking off this season with you all!
