Dear Coaches, 

Gloria Deo Academy and Missouri State University cordially invite you to the 10th annual GDA/MSU invitational on October 14-15, 2022. 

The tournament will offer champ, regular, novice Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Public Forum Debate. We will also be offering Novice and Varsity-International and U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation (NOT Duet acting), Program of Oral Interpretation, Informative Speaking.    

  •  All registration/ scheduling/ etc. will be through ​http://msu_deo.tabroom.com/  Entries not entered through tabroom will not be accepted.

  •  We are limiting entries to 4 per event, but we will grant more should space and judges allow.

  • $9 per entry…​all checks should be made to Gloria Deo Academy

  • All entries must be received by 5:00pm on October 7th. Please submit as soon as possible. Extra entries will be granted as space allows and confirmed after the entry deadline.

General Tournament Rules 

 

  • Each school must be accompanied by an adult sponsor.

  • A student may enter two individual events and debate.

  • Students may only enter one division of extemp.

  • Debaters may enter only one of the following: Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, or Public Forum Debate. Team personnel must remain consistent throughout the tournament.

  • Fees will NOT be refunded for cancellations made after 3PM Monday, October 10th.

  • Please Note: Your team will lose 5 Sweepstakes points for each change made after 10AM on Friday and after 7AM on Saturday!   It is important to call early so changes can be made to the schedule promptly and the tournament can run on time.  Varsity students performing in the wrong room, due to no fault of the tournament, will be given the last place in the room or the loss. 

  • Novice students shall be defined as in their first year of competition.

  • Schools must provide one judge if they have 50 or fewer entries, but one additional judge (for each 6 entries) above 50.(2 judges covers 56, 3 covers 62, etc)  

  • Judges and students need to please report to their rooms(or draw) at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the round.  This includes second flight debate teams.  

 

SWEEPSTAKES RULES

  • Only a school's best two entries in each event earn sweepstakes points.

  • 5 points for each preliminary debate round win.

  • 15 points for qualifying for quarterfinals in debate.

  • 5 points for qualifying for semifinals in speech events.

  • 10 points for qualifying for finals in speech events.

  • 5 points for third place in speech events.

  • 10 points for second place in speech events.

  • 15 points for first place in speech events.

  • There will be a 10 point sweepstakes penalty for each dropped entry on the day of the tournament.

SPEECH EVENTS

  • Extemporaneous Speaking: Drawing will be conducted at five minute intervals with thirty minutes preparation time. Topics will be based on current events. Consultation during prep. time is prohibited. Excessive use of notes will be penalized. The use of laptop computers, electronic storage, retrieval devices, etc.​ i​s permitted in Extemporaneous Speaking for evidence retrieval in the draw room so long as wire or wireless connections are disabled and remain disabled while draw is in progress. ​Time limit: 7 minutes, maximum.​ 

  • Oratory and Informative: The speech must be the original work of the contestant. Not more than 150 words may be a direct quotation. The presentation must be memorized. Time limit:10 minutes, maximum. For Informative: Audio/visual aids may or may not be used to supplement and reinforce the message. During the presentation, no electronic equipment is permitted. The use of live animals or any additional people as visual aids is not allowed during the speech. Items of dress put on and removed during the course of the presentation are considered costumes and may not be part of the contestant’s presentation.

  • Interpretation (Humorous, Dramatic, Duo, & POI—NSDA rules apply): Selections may be taken from any published novel, play or short story. Selections must possess literary merit. An adequate introduction should be provided. Off-stage focus for Duo. No properties may be used. Selections must be memorized. Time limit: 10 minutes, maximum.

  • According to MSHSAA rules, a student who performs in the wrong room will be ranked last in that section.

POLICY DEBATE RULES

  • See Novice policy rules below.   Novice Affirmative teams are limited to the attached case areas list (listed below)

  • Novice teams are not to use kritiks or counterplans.

  • The resolution shall be the NSDA national topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity. ​

  • Policy format of 8-3-5 will be used. Prep time: 8 minutes per team.

  • Since debate is oral communication, evidence shall be presented in an understandable fashion. NSDA guidelines are advised.

  • Contestants more than ten minutes late to a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.

  • Failure to meet judging assignments may result in the forfeiture of the offending school's teams.

  • In case of a forfeit, the winning team will receive speaker ranks of 1-2.

  • Team personnel must remain consistent throughout the tournament.

  • At the end of preliminary rounds, the top teams will advance to quarterfinals. Speaker ranks, the win-loss record of the team to whom the prospective quarterfinalist has lost, speaker points, and total opposition records will be used to break ties.

NOVICE POLICY DEBATE RULES

  • Affirmative cases are to be limited to the case areas as suggested by the NFHS and plan texts as completed by the MSDI.  Remember, the point of novice debate is to help them develop skills and learn.  Educational and meaningful debates are the hopeful outcome.

  • Here are the affirmative cases that may be run (you may click on hyperlinks to download the evidence for free):

1 - MSDI Vaccine Funding - The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in biotechnology through a vaccine research program emphasizing biosafety, resilience, foresight, and experimentalist governance. 

2 - MSDI Human Germline Research - Plan: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the area of biotechnology by banning the use of germline genetic engineering in humans.

3 - MSDI Ban Offensive Cyber Operations -  The United States federal government substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the area of cybersecurity by banning offensive cyber operations. 

4 - MSDI Lethal Autonomous Weapons - The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by banning Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems. 

  • Novice teams are not to use kritiks or counterplans.  Novice teams are encouraged to read disadvantages, make case arguments, etc.

  • Students are not restricted to using only evidence from the MSDI files.  Feel free to cut new or additional evidence to supplement these files or to access the NDCA novice evidence packet or the open evidence project for additional evidence. It is only the plan text and advantage areas that must remain the same as listed above.

  • Please feel free to allow novice students who feel like these guidelines are too restrictive to enter another division.  Open or champ divisions will not follow these specific restrictions.

  • Judges will be instructed about the case area limitations and the restrictions on counterplans and kritiks.

  • If a team believes their opponent has violated the rules listed above, they should: 

    • a.  continue to debate the round,

    • b.  inform their coach immediately after the round, 

    • c.  the coach should immediately inform the tournament director.

    • d.  all final decisions will be made by the tournament director.

    • e.  teams found in violation will receive a loss with speaker ranks of 3-4.

LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATE RULES

  • The proposition shall be the NSDA September-October Topic:  Resolved: The United States ought to implement a single-payer universal healthcare system.

  • Lincoln-Douglas rounds will run at the same time as Policy Debate, so two Lincoln-Douglas Debates will take place during one Policy Debate.

  • Lincoln-Douglas format of 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 will be used. Prep time: 4 minutes per debater.

  • Contestants more than ten minutes late to a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.

  • Failure to meet judging assignments may result in the forfeiture of the offending school's entries.

  • At the end of preliminary rounds, the top contestants will advance to quarterfinals. The win-loss record of the debater to whom the prospective quarterfinalist has lost, speaker points, and total opposition records will be used to break ties.

 

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE RULES

  • The proposition shall be the NSDA September-October topic: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its investment in high-speed rail.

  • Public Forum rounds will run at the same time as Policy debate, so two Public Forum debates will take place during one Policy debate.

  • Public Forum format of 4-3-3-2 will be used. Prep time: 3 minutes per team.

  • Contestants more than ten minutes late to a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.

  • Failure to meet judging assignments may result in the forfeiture of the offending school's teams.

  • In case of a forfeit, the winning team will receive speaker ranks of 1-2.

  • Team personnel must remain consistent throughout the tournament.

  • At the end of preliminary rounds, the top teams will advance to quarterfinals. Speaker ranks, the win-loss record of the team to whom the prospective quarterfinalist has lost, speaker points, and total opposition records will be used to break ties.
