Grizzly Growl Speech Friday Only

Hello! Welcome to the 2021 Skyline High School's Grizzly Growl. This year we will be hosting a one day only, speech only, tournament. This year we are pleased to offer the following speech events:

(Traditional IHSAA Events)

HI, DI, DUO, POI, OO, INFORM, PANEL, DUO RADIO, RETOLD, SALES, ADS, CA, EXTEMP, IMPROMPTU

(New, Fun Events)

Original Interp, Original Comedy, Spar, Duo Radio  [Rules are listed below]

 

Duo Radio: This event will use the same rules for as normal radio except that students may compete with a partner and both partners should strive to have equal speaking time. Students may also chose to compete individually

Panel Topics are:

Round 1: What should the United States Federal Government do to reduce its spending deficit?

Round 2: According to a Gallup Poll released in February 2020, 59% of Americans are not confident in the honesty of Us elections. What can be done to restore voters trust in the election process.

Round 3: Between recent claims made by a whistle-blower regarding issues surrounding Facebook and concerns about fact checking, where do social media sites draw the line between limiting damaging posts and protecting freedom of speech.

Finals: What should be done to close the learning gaps created by the resource inequality found in the school system

This year we will also be offering the following:

Original Interp:

Times: 4 minute Maximum

A serious or humorous program that is based on an original writing of the students. Props, makeup, and costumes are not permitted. The contestants should be evaluated on poise, quality and use of voice, physical expression and especially the ability to interpret characters correctly and consistently. This allows full body movement (bending, kneeling, turning). Presentations must be an original interpretation including characterizations and blocking. Coaches are advised to ensure that all material contains content appropriate for a high school competition. Students are allowed the use of a script. 

Original Comedy:

Time: 3 min max

Students will present an original, school appropriate, stand up comedy routine. Students are not allowed the use of props. Students are allowed the use of a single note card

and Spontaneous Argumentation (SPAR) 

Students will draw three "spontaneous argument topic". One student will select which of the three topics to debate and the other student will select the side. The side that is listed first, speaks first. Students are to be given 1 minute of prep time to prepare their side upon the selection of their topic The format is as follows

1st Affirmative Constructive: 1 minute

1st Negative Constructive: 1 minute

Cross fire (both students ask and answer questions): 1 minute

1st Aff Rebuttal: 1 minute

1st Neg Rebuttal: 1 minute

Aff Final speech: 30 seconds

Neg final speech: 30 seconds

 1 minute prep time per speaker

*Please note that, as the host school, I reserve the right to combine or drop events if there are a low number of entries. Schools will be notified a week prior to the tournament of any drops or event changes. 

 

The schedule will be as follows : 

Check in: 3:00-3:30

Opening Assembly in the Cafeteria: 3:30

Round 1: 4:10-5:35

Round 2: 5:45-7:10

Round 3: 7:20-8:40

Finals: 8:45-9:45
