The Big GUMP Classic

2021 — Montgomery, AL/US

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, parents, and the Montgomery Academy Speech & Debate Team, we would like to welcome you and your students to the Big GUMP Classic. This will be an in-person tournament on the campus of Montgomery Academy located in Montgomery, Alabama. We will offer you and your students competition in the following events:

Big Questions Debate

Congressional Debate

Original Oratory

Informative Speaking

Impromptu Speaking

Extemporaneous Speaking

Dramatic Interpretation

Humorous Interpretation

Prose Interpretation

Poetry Interpretation

Program Oral Interpretation

Duo Interpretation

The reason for these events is simple - Big Questions is rarely offered, and yet is an event at NSDA Nationals. Congress is not offered in a lot of tournaments in Alabama, and it should be offered. Speech Events and Interpretation Events have suffered during Covid and we need a tournament that focuses on these events - And So, The Big GUMP Classic is here to fill a void.

Our schedule will be such that students may enter Big Questions Debate & Congressional Debate as they will occur at different times. Students may enter up to 2 Individual Events and Congress as they will occur at different times. Students may NOT enter Big Questions and Individual Events. We will provide 5 rounds for all competitors in Big Questions and 5 rounds for all competitors in the Individual Events. Congressional Debate will have 2 sessions of 2 hours each with no Final Session - we will have an appropriate number of Chambers in Congress to the entries.

Come to the city that has the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum, the Rosa Parks Museum, the Hank Williams Sr. Museum, and the Zelda & F. Scott Fitzgerald Museum. Montgomery is the birthplace of both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, home to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Air War College of the United States Air Force, and Minor League Baseball’s Team, the Montgomery Biscuits.
