Double Entry:
A student may double in various events as long as the events are not scheduled at the same time. For example a student may enter in a-sync speech (no limit), congress, and debate. But a student could not double enter in extemp and congress.
Determining winners: Congress: Prelim session scores and parliamentarian’s ranking will be added together to determine the final winner in each chamber. Debate: After three preliminary rounds, the top two ranked students will compete in a final round to determine 1 st /2 nd place. The 3 rd and 4 th ranked competitors after prelims will also debate to determine 3 rd place. Speech events: A final round will be run in events with over 10 entries (take a clean break at 6, then 7, then 5, then 8). Prelim ballot ranks will be added to final ballot ranks and the lowest total will place first. Tiebreaks will be broken first by number of 1s, 2s, 3s, if still tied then by judge preference. If no final round is run, all participants will participate in a third round, where in prelim ballots will be added and ties broken as above.
Note on debate rounds: we may do a round four for all, or a final and consolation event.
Coaches will be notified once we determine, based on entry numbers and judge recruitment. Flighted rounds will be determined by number of entries and corresponding judges for each round.
This tournament defines novice/varsity in the following ways in order to protect new students:
Varsity Congress: A student who has competed in ANY SPEECH OR DEBATE EVENT or in CONGRESS previous to this school year.
Novice Congress: A student who has never participated in speech, debate or congress prior to August 2021.
Examples: A student who has never done congress before but who HAS done LD, CX, or PF debate previous to this school year would be considered varsity.
Varsity CX, LD, or PF: A student who competed in 11 or more rounds of debate in school year 202021; or, any student who competed in any debate rounds in school year 2019-20. If one person on a CX or PF team meets standards of Varsity, the team must be registered as Varsity.
Novice CX, LD, or PF: A student who has not competed before the current school year, or who competed in less than 11 rounds of debate last school year. If one student in a CX or PF team qualifies as Varsity, the team must compete as Varsity.
We are looking forward to this tournament and seeing all of you soon!
