West Hardin High School would like to invite you to a UIL style-focused speech tournament/clinic to be held on Saturday, October 9th at West Hardin High School located in Saratoga, Texas.  In order to help new debaters, we have designed the day to ease them into debate.

EVENTS

DEBATE: The day will be designed to give your novice debaters the best beginning possible. To that end, there will be a clinic where they will be given an introduction to debate, cases that they need to debate and some basic negative positions to run. 

ORAL READING: We will also offer two guaranteed rounds of prose and poetry so that every student gets maximum practice time. Students will be able to read ANY prose or poetry selection that is approved by his or her coach.  We will NOT be using categories because of how early it is in the season. There will be no documentation check.

EXTEMP: Extemp will not be divided into informative and persuasive speaking.   Instead, it will be divided into novice and varsity with a mix of topics.

STORYTELLING: No debaters may enter this event. Students should come prepared to read a children’s book appropriate for 5 and 6-year-old children.  Finals will be judged by actual children.  The book may be read either sitting or standing and an introduction should be used. The total performance should be no longer than 5 minutes long.

Other than that, all UIL rules will be followed for both LD and CX with the exception of oral critiques for all and judge guidance for new debaters.

Food

There will be a concession for those who need snacks and/or lunch. Meals should be preordered on the concession tab in tabroom, please.

Costs

40.00 per CX team

            20.00 per LD debater

150.00 per missing judge- we need one judge per 4 LD debaters and /or one judge per two CX teams. 

15.00 per individual entry in prose/poetry

10.00 per entry in storytelling

15.00 per individual entry in extemp

Financial Arrangements

Once registered, payments will be required UNLESS the tournament is canceled by West Hardin.  Please send a check as soon as possible so I can pay judges or let me know that you will be bringing it with you.
