Kingfisher Swing Day 2

Dear Forensics Community,

 

On behalf of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Alumni of Forensics at UIUC, we cordially invite all of you to join us during the first weekend of February (Feb. 6 & 7) to the Annual Kingfisher Swing.  Day 1 will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Day 2 will be hosted by the Alumni of Forensics at UIUC. 

 

We will offer all 11 AFA events through a hybrid swing. Saturday will be hybrid and Sunday will be asynchronous. Please see the invitation below for specific information.  If you have any questions, feel free to call or send us an email. Any questions regarding Day 1 should be directed towards Olivia Harrington of UIUC.  Questions regarding Day 2 should be directed towards John Compton.

Tournament Information

 

Entries & Fees

IE will be hosted on Tabroom.  We’ll send out the links closer to the tournament.

 

Competitors are allowed to enter up to 3 IE events per flight.  Semifinals will be held for any IE event with 45 or more entries. Entries are due at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 2nd.  Drops will be taken until Wednesday, February 3rd at 5:00 PM. Drop fees will be assessed after that.

 

We at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are a student run team, so we are happy to talk about fee waivers for any student run team as well!

 

Please make out all checks to the Speech and Debate Team at the University of Illinois.

 

Entry Fees

IE slots: $8.00

Uncovered IE slots: $10.00 in addition to the base cost

 

Drop Fees

IE slots dropped after Wednesday the 3rd: $10.00

IE slots dropped after registration: $15.00

IE judges dropped after Wednesday the 3rd: $25.00 plus the cost of hiring a judge



Judges

Each IE judge will cover 6 entries.  Any judges dropped after the Wednesday 5pm deadline will be assessed a drop fee as listed above.

 

Rules

The tournament will be using AFA rules for IE.  Impromptu prompts will be given in the form of a quotation or proverb.

 

Awards

Certificates will be provided for all finalists in each event, as well as awards for the top 3 in each event.  The top non-advancing novice in each event will also be recognized.  A novice for our tournament will be defined as anyone in their first year of collegiate speech.



Sweepstakes

Students competing in at least 4 IE events in at least 2 genres will be eligible for Individual Sweepstakes awards.  The top 3 schools overall will receive Team Sweepstakes awards.



SCHEDULE: 

 

Saturday

The Kingfisher Swing will follow the AFA – NST standards for videos:

- Students are only allowed use of one microphone and one speaker.

- Duo partners are not allowed to perform in the same room for filming.

- Physically present audiences (aside from the camera operator) are not allowed.

 

The tournament will provide links for judging rounds to judges with their dance cards / eballots.

We will also provide these links to other competitors in the round if they would like to observe.

Due to privacy concerns, only judges and students participating in a specific round will have

access to video links for that round. Please do not share these links with others out of respect

for the performers’ privacy.

The same video will be used for both preliminary rounds

 

The finals round will have the following schedule:

9:00 AM Release

9:30 AM Extemp Prep

10:00 AM Flight A Finals

11:30 AM Flight B Finals

2:00 PM/ASAP Awards

 

Sunday

As with the Saturday portion, the tournament will provide links for judging rounds to judges with their dance cards / eballots. We will also provide these links to other competitors in the round if they would like to observe. Due to privacy concerns, only judges and students participating in a specific round will have access to video links for that round. Please do not share these links with others out of respect

for the performers’ privacy.

The same video will be used for all rounds: 2 preliminary rounds and finals.

 

A recorded awards ceremony will be held via Zoom at 2:00 PM
